XFM Charts 1997-2006

It probably does seem a little self-entitled to moan about the music that was now being played, but I think complaints are valid and that the homogenisation of Xfm was generally a bad thing for UK pop music. When the station went on air in 1997, one or two playlisted tracks were subsequently getting onto R1 and then breaking into the national charts (Failure by Skinny comes to mind). This could have continued, but given that pretty much all of the 'approved' tracks in the post-Capital Xfm chart were already in the UK Top 40 anyway, there was no longer possibility for any kind of crossover.

Quite liked that Ooberman single at the time - it was playlisted on GLR, to which I'd pretty much defected by now. They were also playing the Beasties, Pavement and SFA singles - probably the only other cuts in that chart with which I'd especially bother - so, no harm done.

camdwntownjohn wrote:The first XFM RSL (in Camden and Islington only), I was still living in South London, but tried to listen to it in my earphones at work in Holborn. One weekend I went to Islington and listened to the whole chart show with Steve Lamacq in a park. I moved to Camden the actual day the next one started in 1993.
I can remember trying to do the same in 1992, at my job (also in Holborn, bizarrely - well, Chancery Lane), but struggling to maintain reception. Gary Crowley was on one morning: the only tracks I can recall hearing were Connected by Stereo MCs and Visions of You by Jah Wobble's Invaders of the Heart. I'm sure he played more interesting stuff, but I couldn't keep it tuned. His Sunday show on GLR was usually pretty decent at the time.

Yeah, but youtube was founded in 2005, i was just trying to describe how hard it was before that.
my main source at that time, 80's-90's, for finding a new music weren't radio or televison but the music press,
notably NME - still have some 400 issues in my collection (Occupy space and collecting dust  ), starting from 1982,
sadly at the turn of the century it becomes more like a Smash hits for indie kids,
then Raygun magazine (last published in 2000). :(
Ray Gun was an American alternative rock-and-roll magazine, first published in 1992 in Santa Monica, California. Led by founding art director David Carson, Ray Gun explored experimental magazine typographic design. The result was a chaotic, abstract style, not always readable, but distinctive in appearance. That tradition for compelling visuals continued even after Carson left the magazine after three years; he was followed by a series of art directors, including Robert Hales, Chris Ashworth, Scott Denton-Cardew, and Jerome Curchod.
Uncut, Select, Loaded, etc.- oh i spent too much money on this :-?

Today, of course, represents the twentieth anniversary of the official launch of Xfm 104.9 - and to commemorate, here's the link to a recording of the opening ninety minutes or so of broadcasting:

How good it could - and should - have been, eh?

Gary Crowley’s GLR show started in (I think) 1990, at which time it was essential listening – Radio One had moved John Peel to 20:30 and axed the early-evening indie/alternative show, so there was no other outlet for the music of the type Crowley was played. It continued until 1997 when he left to do the XFM morning programme.

When Capital took over XFM, Crowley was offered overnights (01:00 to 06:00) but declined and soon returned to the BBC in London, where he remains now. The GLR breakfast show in the early 1990s with Kevin Greening was a good mixture of local news reports and bands like the Wonder Stuff and Baby Bird (and unfortunately, Crowded House). This odd mixture led to oddities such as Tommy Vance, of all people, announcing one afternoon that the 1991 Soviet coup had failed. They also offered good weekend programming with Danny Baker and Chris Evans when they were still fresh and funny, also Mark Lamarr and Chris Morris. These days they are just like any other BBC local station with endless discussions and phone-ins about “soft” issues, and predictable old music – though Robert Elms is sometimes good.

I remember walking down the canal with GLR news in my earphone and hearing that XFM had won the license. It may have worked out better if they had won it when they first tried in 1995, when the two awards went to Virgin (who were already on AM, which they said they were satisfied with when they applied for it in the first place) and Heart, thus ignoring the Radio Authority’s remit to expand radio choice. It was even more annoying when it emerged that XFM had been leading by one vote, when the committee chairman voted against it in the absence of another committee member, and then resolved the resulting tied situation by using his casting vote in the same way. The way the UK chart was at this time, they could have built an audience and established themselves more easily than in 1997.

Thanks for posting the Soundcloud links, I’ve listened to most of it. I went out from work at lunchtime to hear the opening of the station that day (I also heard Ricky Gervais’ phone-in later at 23:00). Listening to it now, the Crowley/Hodge hour is much more indie-rock than was usual, the usual playlist seemed to kick in when Claire Sturgess took over. At the end of September 1997 I gave up work, and was studying at home for three and a half months which gave me a lot of opportunity to hear the station at its peak.

I’ve got a huge collection of Disc, Record Mirror, Sounds and NME, and fanzines, though I did throw out a lot of the 1980s editions when I left home. I rarely went to see a band I hadn’t heard on the radio though. I used a switching device which would turn the electricity on to the radio-tape recorder for an hour, so I could record John Peel or Round Table when I was out.

Sorry, that was wrong on my original spreadsheet from the time; the correct Toploader track must have been 'Achilles Heel'.

They had to moderate it a bit after being pulled up by the Radio Authority. To a certain extent it was not the actual records at the top of the playlist that was the biggest problem, but the over-frequent rotation, the numebr of weeks tracks stayed on the list, and the lack of spontaneity.
I may have some full playlists for this period which I ought to dig out.

I don't remember that song, I will listen to it, although 'Iris' was very annoying.
I've got no memory of hearing these 1999 charts, but it must have damaged my brain to have to listen to the Offspring and Blink 182 in succession (below).
Loved the Gorky's track though.

That was a problem with Capital per se - outside of the playlist itself, the original station was rendered virtually unlistenable by the near-OCD policy of rotating hits way after they'd left the chart, even to the detriment of an artist's follow-up. I imagine the back-room thinking was 'give them what they know', but it's always seemed both patronising and counter-productive to me. Applying this mentality to Xfm was hugely offensive to its listener base, IMO.

Until the mid-1980s, all radio stations would stop playing records almost as soon as they started to fall in the charts. As "oldies" stations started to come on air, you'd think the existing stations would focus even more on new releases, but the opposite happened.

This is copied from my original 1999 spreadsheet. I didn't notice the errors when copying it today, but presumably didn't catch the Liberty 37 title at the time. It's probably a re-entry of 'When We Say'.
