Bit surprised there wasn't a thread for it, but they are starting today!

Stunning opening ceremony! I've never seen anything of this scale.
I'd build a road in gold just to have some dreaming

For a winter olympic opening ceremony it can definitely count. I think it's beautiful. It's not as big as the summer olympics openings ceremonies of course. That's logical though.

I don't think they performed, their song was just used to introduce the russian athletes in the arena.

It wasn't broadcast internationally:

t.A.T.u., the Russian pop duo who rose to fame with the song 'All The Things She Said', have performed at the Sochi Winter Olympics opening ceremony. Considering the song's music video saw the two dressed as schoolgirls kissing in the rain, it's not the most obvious choice. Watch clips of the performance below.

Russia passed a federal law back in July banning the 'promotion of homosexuality to minors', and same-sex couples receive no legal recognition by the state. Though both members of t.A.T.u. have admitted they were only acting in the music video, their decision to perform has proven controversial, given their reputation as part of the LGBT movement.

The performance was not broadcast internationally and, unsurprisingly, they chose to perform 'Not Gonna Get Us' rather than 'All The Things She Said.'

Show director Konstantin Ernst said that despite the laws discriminating against homsexuality in Russia, t.A.T.u. were included in the ceremony because they are one of the few Russian pop acts that international viewers might recognise.

Earlier in the week, band member Lena Katina reportedly took to twitter to criticise Sochi officials, writing: "The organisation is horrible... They're treating the artists like shit!!!" The post has since been deleted.

t.A.T.u. have had three studio albums, but their debut, 200km/h in the Wrong Lane, which featured the single 'All The Things She Said', was by far the most successful.

TATU were in the pre-show live, i've just read. So it was the Frank Turner of Sochi. Though rather more interesting. http://www.buzzfeed.com/skarlan/russian ... he-ol?bftw

I was also very very surprised TATU performed or whatever considering the homophobia there and they were perceived as a gay act...

Yay we've scored another medal! Congrats David Morris on your silver in the men's aerials. Not bad for a bloke who was never expected to do much in the sport...

Norwegians were superpower in winter sports before that Games already.

Congrats to our neighbours Slovenians (not Slovakia) - 7 medals (2 million inhabitans) - well done :D
