A DISASTROUS FIRST YEAR FOR JAY Z’S TIDAL; IS SALE IMMINENT?

"Is cash-strapped Tidal about to be sold? The latest rumor has it that a sale to one of the big tech entities is a done deal in handshake form. This sexy speculation occurs at a particularly ugly moment for the company.

The Wall Street Journal made no attempt to sugarcoat the situation in a Tuesday morning story:

“In the year rap mogul Jay Z took control of Tidal, the music-streaming service more than doubled its net loss, burning cash at a rapid rate and testing the depth of its owner’s pocket,” reads the lead.

According to a legal filing sourced by WSJ, Aspiro AB, Tidal’s Swedish holding company, recorded a net loss of 239 million Swedish kronor ($28 million) last year, compared with a net loss of 88.9 million kronor in 2014.

Aspiro had net cash of 35.4 million Swedish kronor at the end of 2015, down from 63.5 million kronor a year earlier. That was despite receiving a cash injection of 93.6 million kronor through a rights issue.

A board assessment had concluded the company lacked funding for 2016, the filing acknowledged, but added, “The board believes the company will be able to secure new financing.”

It appears that the company paid nearly 300 million Swedish kronor in royalty fees to record labels last year, or roughly three quarters of revenue.

Here’s a stat that indicates Tidal’s lack of scale: Drake's total streams on all services surpass Tidal's total streams of the top 1,000 songs by half a billion.

It’s symptomatic of the company’s degree of desperation that Kanye West’s first week or two of streams were not reported, and Tidal claimed the number was 250 million—a monumental exaggeration.

Not only is Tidal bleeding money, but the loss of exclusives to attract new subscribers, exacerbated by its own artist owners bailing (e.g., Jason Aldean bypassing the service, Kanye’s album with Drake going to Apple Music) is rendering the prospectus even more dire.

Nonetheless, the bones of the service are believed to be superior to Apple Music and Spotify, and the service’s reported 4.2m subs have value—making the above rumor seem plausible."

Please, people have been predicting TIDAL's death since it started. Next.

Jay Z and Beyoncé are throwing a charity concert

Jay Z and Beyoncé are planning a massive Tidal gig in New York on Oct. 15 in collaboration with Wall Street’s favorite charity, the Robin Hood Foundation.

Jay and Bey will perform, as well as Nicki Minaj, Lauryn Hill and Lil Wayne, at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center.

The event — for which tickets will start at $50, with some VIP packages going up to $100,000 — will raise money for Robin Hood, education for children in NYC and for charities nominated by the artists. The event will also be streamed live on Tidal.

Robin Hood fights poverty and funds educational programs in New York’s poorest areas. Its board includes Paul Tudor Jones, David Einhorn, David Tepper and Katie Couric.

Confirmed!

Next month, Jay Z and Beyoncé will host the second iteration of their Tidal X charity concert. The event, dubbed Tidal X: 1015 will take place on October 15 at the Barclays Center, and it will feature performances from Beyoncé, Lauryn Hill, Nicki Minaj, Blood Orange, Alicia Keys, Common, Lil Yachty, Salva, and others. The proceeds from the concert will go to the Robin Hood Foundation “to raise awareness, and funds in order to create positive social impact focusing on education initiatives around the world,” according to a press release.

In a statement, Dania Diaz (VP of Philanthropy, Roc Nation) said: “Supporting the community and having positive impact is a TIDAL tenet and mission. We are honored to partner with Robin Hood for TIDAL X: 1015 around this year’s current theme, education. We know that education can advance communities and can be the most powerful tool for change. Robin Hood has helped transform communities in positive ways by supporting education programs that generate meaningful results.”

Tidal X: 1015 follows last year’s Tidal X: 1020 at Barclays. Nicki Minaj, Lil Wayne, Usher, T.I., Alessia Cara, Flatbush Zombies, and more performed at the event, which benefited the New World Foundation.

^Um, Bey was also in the line up. What did you expect, last minute seats available?
People are not attending because Tidal is linked to it. In fact they don't give a F about Tidal (and still won't subscibe)
They're there for the artists

I have to recognize that I didn't believe Tidal would be running until today. With 4,2M subscribers as of July, 2016, we didn't hear anything about the service since the last "Tidal X" event.

What is happening? Is Jay-Z waiting until he can sell Tidal and get out of business? Maybe we all are wrong and the service is growing slowly but is doing good on its own rate. Maybe they're happy being the 4th or 5th player on the game.

I think they are gonna sell it next year...or merge it with something else.

Or just become a musical outlet with special concerts and stuff.

Tidal Becomes First Service to Offer “Master-Quality” Streaming

Tidal is now offering “master-quality audio recordings” to its highest-tiered subscribers, the company announced today. Tidal Masters is available at no extra cost to users who already have a Tidal HiFi subscription. Described as “an audio experience exactly as the artist intended,” Tidal Masters songs are streamed at 96 kHz/24 bit. (For comparison, HiFi audio’s resolution is 44.1 kHz/16 bit, and Spotify’s highest resolution is ~320 kbps, equivalent to Tidal’s Premium tier.)

Tidal has partnered with Master Quality Authenticated to provide the higher resolution audio. Currently, Tidal Masters is available only on desktop. Below, watch a video introducing Masters. Find the streaming company’s master-quality catalog, which includes music from Jay Z, Beyoncé, David Bowie, Madonna, Joni Mitchell, and more, here.

Several streaming platforms and record labels have also announced plans to offer high-resolution streaming, Billboard reports. At a Digital Entertainment Group-sponsored “Audio Pavilion” at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, three major labels (Universal, Sony, and Warner), the Recording Industry Association of America, and three streaming platforms (Pandora, Rhapsody/Napster, and HD Tracks) indicated that they would like to explore new high-resolution opportunities.

You Can Now Edit Song Lengths and Tempos on Tidal

Tidal has introduced a new feature called Track Edit, which allows users to adjust the length and speed of selected tracks before saving those edited versions to a playlist. This can be done by using the option menu while playing any track in the Tidal app; the tempo can be changed after you select a section of the song. Pitchfork has reached out to Tidal representatives for further clarification on the new functionality. Earlier this month, it was revealed that the streaming company would begin offering “master-quality” audio streaming.

"Norwegian Report Claims Tidal Inflated Subscriber Numbers

In a lengthy article published Friday (Jan. 20), Norwegian media outlet Dagens Næringsliv claims that Jay Z's company Tidal has been deliberately inflating subscriber numbers. The report says that although the company publicly touted that it had accumulated 3 million subscribers to its streaming service last March, a London-based record executive says they were told Tidal actually had 850,000 subscribers..."

Sprint Buys 33 Percent of Tidal
Giving Sprint’s 45 million retail customers access to the service

Sprint has taken a 33 percent stake in Jay Z’s streaming service, Tidal. With the deal, which Billboard reports to have cost Sprint $200 million, Jay Z and the company’s 24 artist owners will remain instated as part-owners. Sprint’s 45 million “post and prepaid” retail customers will now have access to Tidal, with company CEO Marcelo Claure joining Tidal’s board of directors.

Jay Z said in a statement:
Sprint shares our view of revolutionizing the creative industry to allow artists to connect directly with their fans and reach their fullest, shared potential. Marcelo understood our goal right away and together we are excited to bring Sprint’s 45 million customers an unmatched entertainment experience.

In a statement, Claure said:
Jay saw not only a business need, but a cultural one, and put his heart and grit into building TIDAL into a world-class music streaming platform that is unrivaled in quality and content. The passion and dedication that these artist-owners bring to fans will enable Sprint to offer new and existing customers access to exclusive content and entertainment experiences in a way no other service can.

The companies will also partner for artist exclusives, while a new marketing fund of $75 million will support artist initiatives and exclusives. Certain promotions will be exclusive to Sprint customers who subscribe to Tidal, according to a press release.

The future of Tidal’s ownership has long been in the balance. Last March, Jay Z served the service’s previous owners with claims that they inflated subscriber totals when negotiating their $56 million deal. “It became clear after taking control of Tidal and conducting our own audit that the total number of subscribers was actually well below the 540,000 reported to us by the prior owners,” a statement from Tidal read. “As a result, we have now served legal notice to parties involved in the sale.”

Streaming-only releases recently became eligible to receive Grammy Awards. 2015 marked the first year that streaming was the biggest source of recorded music revenue in the United States.

My mobile service here in Portugal (Meo) did the exact same thing. They own their own streaming service (Meo Music) and it's free for all their customers, we're technically paying the service in the overall price, but it's far more convenient than add a Spotify subscription.

I think this is good.

Here's hoping we finally have decent streaming numbers for 'Lemonade' in the US. lol

PRIME MOVER: AMAZON'S STREAMING GAINS

"Amazon Music Unlimited has gained 2% marketshare in the streaming racesince last the week of 9/29. We analyzed the top 25k streamed songs at each of the top five accounts, and found that in the last six months, the e-tail giant's service has not only remained the #3 streamery but has moved up from 6-8% marketshare. It was the only service to make an appreciable gain in share during that interval. One likely contributor: the advent of voice-activated gizmo Echo, which became available for the Christmas rush.

Spotify, at around 64% at the end of September, was at 62% the week of 2/23; the Swedish firm, which just announced it has reached the benchmark of 50 million subscribers, remains the 800-lb. gorilla of the platform. Apple Music has remained steady at about 25%.Google Play Music (the audio service, not YouTube) has stuck around 4%, and Tidal at 1%.

Perhaps most notably for the biz as a whole, the 25k songs from each account collectively increased to about 4.5 billion total streams, up almost a billion from 3.6b the week of 9/29."

Streaming platforms marketshare
Spotify: 62%
Apple Music: 25%
Amazon: 8%
Google Play: 4%
Tidal: 1%

Ok, definitely Tidal is a fraud :-?

"US chart update: Tidal will not be reporting first week streams for Jay-Z's '4:44' (not eligible for this week's Billboard 200)."
