How to enable YouTube's new transparent player
YouTube is rolling out a new design for its video player. Learn how you can get the new look right now in Chrome and Firefox.

YouTube is testing a new design that turns the bar of controls along the bottom edge of its video player transparent. The change is rolling out slowly, but if you are eager to get it now, you can do so by editing a cookie in your browser. Here's how to do it in Chrome and Firefox.

YouTube are also completely bonkers!
I uploaded a video to the site of a video that had been previously on YouTube and which is still on YouTube in several different versions and shortly after it had uploaded they told me it was blocked worldwide because of a claim by Viacom
Yet as I said there are several videos of the same thing uploaded by ordinary users and their video is not blocked Worldwide.
Here is one of the video's which should therefore be blocked worldwide:

Since when do Viacom own the BBC?

Does anybody outside AU/CA/UK/US have noticed that after Warner now Sony has stepped up geo-restricting a notch?
Videos that were perfectly available a week ago are now muted and/or no longer available... :o

What is going on with youtube adverts?? I had 5 unskippable ads play during a 20minute youtube video, and then a 7 minute unskippable ad play before a 10 minute video?

Do you not use AdBlock? Or were you accessing via your phone? If phone, I've noticed an increase in ads but nothing too off putting.

No it's on my Mac and I do have ad-block. It's really frustrating when videos keep stopping to play an advert in the middle.

That's ok if it gives you an idea that it's the kind of video you want to watch, but not when it gives everything away in the preview

Has anyone noticed it's now cutting the sides off videos that aren't in widescreen?

Open this in YouTube and tell me it's not just me

Seems like they adjust the format depending on the video now. I mean : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8cSDh6KKAjE
5.05.2009 / 6.22.2011 / 4.24.2013 / 4.25.2013 / 3.1.2014 / 9.13.2014 / 7.21.2016 / 7.14.2018 / 7.15.2018

What happens if you upload an old tape recording of FM Radio Chart show to YouTube?

Answer: they leave the video on and delete the audio. Only they don't do it straight away. They wait a long time then do it. Plus they don't mention they have done it at all to you.
I only found out the other day when I was looking at some users comments :o

I reckon that YouTube must have more banned members then any other site on the planet!

Old recordings are still protected by copyright. If you don’t own the content don’t upload it. It doesn’t matter if you state you don’t own the copyright, that’s not good enough. The only way anyone can upload copyright content to YouTube is to own the original or have permission to use it in the first instance.

Everything is protected by copyright and when it was first uploaded, YouTube were paying the copyright holders of all the music featured in it. So what has changed?

95% of the user videos on YouTube have no permission from copyright holders, but if you search for a song on YouTube you will see thousands of cover versions of the thing. Some even claiming the same title and artist as the original. It's not until you view it you find there's no connection with the song.

If the users of YouTube followed your advice, then the only content on YouTube would the stuff put up there by record companies, and other commercial companies, simply interested in making money from people who watch the videos and adverts. Was that the reason YouTube was set up?

Footnote
I haven't uploaded any video's in ages. The last one was the Shakespeare one. Which hasn't captured the public imagination, with when they do watch it, only stay for an average of 3 minutes!
One submitted by a commercial company about smoking dope (which he didn't) got a huge amount of views. That sums up YouTube for me
