44 | You've Got Time
    Image
Stay awake
In the dark, count mistakes
The light was off but now it's on
Searching the ground for a bitter song
The sun is out, the day is new
And everyone is waiting, waiting on you
And you've got time

As the theme song of Orange Is the New Black, I think it ties in nicely with the content, but can also be understood in a more general sense. To keep it short, my view on it is that it's about being stuck in a rut, in the same place and not being able to break free from the vicious cycle, while at the same time being surrounded by the pressures of society to constantly be on the go, have plans, security, goals, success etc. I think the speed of the song really gives that rush vibe that can be applied to today's life and how we're all basically raised to constantly plan our life and have some ambitions since school.

On the other hand, she gives some comfort with the "you've got time" line, tells you not to fuss that much over it, and that it's never too late to start something after exiting a long rut. The prison context works well here, as one can feel they lost a lot of time in jail, yet it's never too late and never hopeless to start anew.

43 | Mermaid
    Image
I'm a mermaid
But I've sold my voice
And I got rid of my tail
At a junkyard sale
Along with some favorite childhood toys

Ok, I'm finally updating  Here's an unreleased song, performed live and floating around Youtube. A simple analysis will be enough for this. She takes the little mermaid story and applies it to humanity, a thing she often does with such references. The song's about sacrificing something that makes us unique in order to maybe fit into society, win over someone, be something we're really not.

And so, the mermaid trades away her voice so she could have feet, but the feet constantly hurt and bleed. The guy she wants to win over ditches her when he realises she's mute, while she actually got rid of her voice to be with him. She sells her tail and she can't swim - she ties this nicely with the bottle of gin: she can't swim, and she doesn't want to float, which is nt only literally, but float in her imagination. Then when we look at a verse later, she sells her childhood toys, another symbol of youth, naivete, imagination. Still, she trades all of that for gin and cocaine, and she tries to escape the brutal reality she entered when she got rid of her voice and her life.

Not quite sure about the part when she plants a flower and calls it Mozart, my theory is that it represents a glimpse of hope for the mermaid, as she saves the flower's life and gains some new purpose. That's all for this one!

Nice, but terrible sound!
I think the mozart line means that she can still make music even without a voice?

Finally resurrecting this  I'll try to finish it (but no rush)

42 | December
    Image
Come on and say you're sorry,
Real sorry for the trouble that you caused
Can't you see all this love?
Can't you see all this love?

Another pretty unknown one. To me this song might be about a bitter divorce/break-up, and the subject unwilling to give up on the relationship (we are not evacuating this house, the house being the relationship) and blaming the other person for the separation (you and your wrecking crew ; c'mon and say you're sorry for the trouble that you caused).

The first part is a bit unfitting with the rest, but maybe it's the phase before the break-up, when the other person is unhappy in the relationship, while the subject is in denial and tells his/her partner to turn [his/her] frown upside down because December will start soon (alluding to jolly Christmastime probably). And this, then, leads into the second part after the separation.

41 | Mockingbird
    Image
Hush, little baby, here comes the sandman
Papa's gonna buy you a medical plan
Oh, and if that medical plan don't cover your ass
Papa's gonna buy you a pregnancy test
And if that pregnancy test comes out positive
Well then, girl, I don't know how the hell we're gonna live
Maybe on your bright ideas
Maybe on cigarette butts
Maybe on bubblegum wrappers
Maybe on penalty shots

This one's so sad, and so real. She basically takes the children's lullaby and changes it into a song about a poor, dysfunctional family. The father sings it to his daughter, hopeful at first, but then he realises the reality of their situation and the quite possible bad future ahead of them.

40 | Small Town Moon
    Image
I must've lived a thousand times
But every day begins the same
'Cause there's a small town in my mind
How can I leave without hurting everyone that made me?

The song is about a person who probably left his/her small hometown to pursue their dreams in a big city, live the life, experience more things. Yet, despite having "lived a thousand times", i.e. having experienced tons of stuff, they still think about their home and family, which shaped them and still brings up many memories.

It's probably also about growing up and growing apart from one's family that stays behind in the small town. And so, the person debates whether to leave and hurt the people who raised him/her in order to pursue his/her own life in a more exciting place, or stay home with the family, the memories and the comfort, but miss out on other things.

39 | Sailor Song
    Image
It's such a strange job
Playing blackjack on the deck
Still, atop this giant puddle
Dressed in white we quietly huddle with our missiles
And we miss the girls back home
Oh home sweet home

The title says it all, it's a song about sailors, by sailors! She sounds kind of drunk while singing, which is probably on purpose, as the whole thing represents sailors in their jolly singing mood, thinking about home, cursing the sea. The Mary Ann in the song is not a girl, but in fact the sea itself, she's a bitch because she's taking them away from their homes. Quite full of imagery, this song, you can imagine a movie scene on a ship with sailors drinking and singing.
