Mainshow Goes Eurovision - RECAP 2017 - Post Ur Top 10s!

Postby Mainshow » Thu Sep 17, 2015 11:05 pm

I have started to watch Europe's favourite TV show - the EUROVISION SONG CONTEST - in 1997 and soon I became a huge and avid fan of its concept and format. For all the years I've watched the show, I have compiled lists showing my Top10 of each year. I presented those on my last.fm profile but thanks to the web page's amazingly utterly horrible revamped design :evil: :roll: , all data has been deleted and I think that it's time to present my favourite 10 tracks of each year to my fellars on Ukmix ;) - Also, I think that my lists won't be deleted that easily on this forum.

Moreover, I will count all points a country receives from me together so that, in the end, a final list of my favourite Eurovision countries will be published.

Hopefully, you will like my Top10s ;)

Let us start with the year when I watched Eurovision for the very first time of my life: 1997.

#10 MALTA (1 point) Image

Debbie Scerri - Let Me Fly

Although the vocal performance at Eurovision's night hadn't been perfect, the song itself is an interesting choice for an entry. It has some medieval influences and the dreamy singing part after the first chorus always gets me. Malta reached #9 in Eurovision getting 66 points, including 12 points by Turkey.

#9 TURKEY (2 points) Image

Şebnem Paker & Grup Ethnic - Dinle

Amazing and interesting arrangement and catchy chorus. The ethno-pop entry has been Turkey's first Top 3 achievement in Eurovision.

#8 IRELAND (3 points) Image

Marc Roberts - Mysterious Woman

One of Ireland's best ballads to date. This track ended up being #2 and it marks the end of Ireland's supremacy in Eurovision. After having won 7 times (4 of them happened in the 90s), "Myserious Woman" has been the last Top5 placing of Ireland to this date!

#7 Hungary (4 points) Image

V.I.P. - Miért kell, hogy elmenj?

Eurovision had been quite old-fashioned in the 90s up to the mid noughties when it comes to the entries but "Miért kell, hogy elmenj?" submitted by Hungary perfectly fitted to the rise of bubblegum pop. In Eurovision 1997, it ended up being #12 respectively. The British televoters even voted this entry in their Top 3! :o

#6 CYPRUS (5 points) Image

Hara & Andreas Konstantinou - Mana Mou

In the song, Cyprus' beauty as a country is compared to Aphrodite's outward appearance. This may be the reason why the arrangement of this ethno-pop track is so sensual and seductive. It received 12 points by Greece AND Iceland and had been ranked #5 on Eurovision's final scoreboard. It is one out of three Cypriot entries which went Top 5 in Europe's biggest TV show.

Before I continue the countdown, I would like to know your opinion and your favourites from that year. How do your Top10s look like?
I know, that 1997 is quite far away and most of the entries have been erased from our memories, that's why I would like to post a short recap of all entries of 1997.

If a small amount of users post their Top10s of 1997, I will count them all together and present a "UKmix"/"Followers"' Top10 on the first page of this topic. I think it would be interesting to see the difference in our rankings. So feel free to join me and post your Top10 ;) - Cannot wait!

I'm not very familiar with ESC editions that have taken place a long time ago, but definitely curious to see the top 10's of each year.

@yomaku
Great to see you here and I totally agree on you saying that 1997 was a great year for Eurovision. Personally, I think that there were no bad songs being submitted that year.
However, so far we are only sharing one country when it comes to our Top10s ("Turkey"). Stay tuned if more a to follow.

@Erotica
Thanks for sharing your Top10 with us ;) - Glad that we have something in common ;)

@Noahh
That's what I thought; that's why I posted a recap of the tracks and like yomaku and I have already mentioned, 1997 was really a great year. I would like to get to know your opinion and your Top10 of that particular year. The recap I posted is definitely worth watching (Tell him, yomaku) :D

#5 United Kingdom (6 points) Image

Katrina & The Waves - Love Shine a Light

This had winner written all over it. It's freaking catchy and incredibly cheesy to some extend but the song itself is also uplifting and gives hope. Also, the UK delivered an amazing vocal performance. After "Walking On Sunshine", this is Katrina & The Waves' biggest hit.

#4 SLOVENIA (7 points) Image

Tanja Ribič - Zbudi se

"Zbudi se" is one of three Slovenian entries which have ended up being Top10 in Eurovision and if you ask me, rightly so! The song itself is a melancholic and beautifully sung ballad with a classic arrangement.

okay, fist of all: 1997 was an awful year :lol:

I don't have a Top Ten but I do managed to get a Top Eight (with some not so serious comments) :
1. Turkey
2. UK
3. France (12 year-old?)
4. Greece
5. Poland (fancy)
6. Netherlands (lovely choreography)
7. Russia (very powerful + hair omg)
8. Iceland (loved the sex club atmosphere)

yeah, that's it and thank you Mainshow for bullying me into creating an account here ;)

I think I was a little young watching it then, I do remember being allowed to watch the show from probably 1994 onwards, but we were never allowed to stay up late enough to watch the results :lol: Katrina was a great winner though! What a shame we haven't won again since!

Hehe, I just spread the word: UKmix is the best forum on Earth. It's really great to have you here and I like your avatar ;)

Don't say that :D Like yomaku also mentioned, 1997 was a great year but glad that you enjoyed at least some of the entries ;)

@SholasBoy
I imagine a little Shane in front of a TV being excited about Eurovision :D So cute that you weren't allowed to stay up late enough to watch the results. - Eurovision has always been a huge thing in my family and I can remember my parents taken me to a Eurovision party at a family's friends house when Guido Horn represented Germany (1998). Whole Germany was loving that guy at that time. I was 5,5 years old and I stayed all night long to see if Germany is going to win. I think that I started to love Eurovision that year ;)
Totally agree on Katrina being a great winner and if you ask me, UK deserved to win in 2011 (or at least be part of the Top5). Stupid juries...

@Noahh
Thanks for providing us your Top10. It is interesting to see that you like Estonia that much ;)

#3 Italy (8 points) Image

Jalisse - Fiumi di parole

Absolutely amazing vocal performance and one of Italy's best entries. It's a shame that Italy decided to withdraw after 1997, although they ended up being #4 that year. Italy did return 14 (!) years later, though. The song itself is about a troubled relationship that rivers of words "fiumi di parole" have come between a couple; that's basically why some dramatic vibe is attached to one of my favourite entries of that year. - Benny needs to listen to it :D

#2 Iceland (10 points) Image

Paul Oscar - Minn hinsti dans

The Icelandic performance can be described in three words: Progressive. Innovative. Provocative. The electronic track deals with a man having faced a fancy, luxurious life full of parties, champagne and "love [obviously, he means "sex"] as desert" and who is ready to have his "final dance (minn hinsti dans)" before dying. An impressive performance and a hunting and shocking theme make this Icelandic entries one of my favourite entries of the late 90s.

#1 Poland (12 points) Image

Anna Maria Jopek - Ale jestem

In 1997, "Ale jestem" only missed the Top10 by finishing #11. However, in my list the often overlooked country reached the deserving #1 spot. The uplifting up-tempo song deals with the joys of life and the theme is reflected in a very diverse and joyful arrangement. Strings, flutes, bells, they all come together to celebrate life. It is a perfect song for an orchestra which still had been a part of Eurovision in 1997. Poland received points from 14 different countries and it should have been definetely more ;)
