Airwreckastan calling...

12 Denmark
10 Belarus
8 Russia
7 Germany
6 Norway
5 Switzerland
4 Estonia
3 San Marino
2 Georgia
1 Azerbaijan

Worthy mentions: Romania, Ukraine

I'm sorry to put the winner as my #1 again, but I really loved that song from the moment I heard it. The melody, the instruments, her vocal tone - it was all so beautiful. :cry:

I like Germany's a lot, but IMO the "Glooooorious" bits were a bit too similar to "Euphooooooria".

And again, I'm late to the mainshow :lol:

Finally some lovely recaps <3

2 0 1 2

OMG Ell looks so scary, wtf.

I found that year quite bizzare, the semi finals are so f*cking weak, but the Big 5 are pretty strong, and then my Top 2 performances are among the very, very best ones of all time :lol:

My ranking:

120 Sweden - One moment in time. I don't know, it became "THE Eurovision moment". I feel like Loreen will be the Queen of Eurovision forever. Everything was on point. This is Eurovision. This is Sweden. That's why it bothers me even more that she, her team, her label, or whoever f*cked up making her a huge European star. But, this special moment stays forever, and I'm unsure if something else will ever top it in the future <3

100 F.Y.R. Macedonia - SLAY. SLAY. SLAY. This is for sure in my Top 5 of all performances EVER. GOD IT'S SO GOOD. It paved the way for this year's huge disappointment. THAT SCREAM <3

80 Spain - It still slays me so much. It's my fave Spanish entry ever. What an amazing staging! Everything looks so on point here.

70 Serbia - So. So. So. Beautiful. True art. The climax <3

6 Cyprus - She's so funny :lol: Gay clubs need to play this more often!

5 Germany - #6 in the televote. Slay a bit. For the last time, Germany. HIS EYES. Ugh, Roman, I wanna cuddle with you.

4 Norway - I don't understand why it failed that hard in the final. Wasn't it even like his birthday? His church orgasm of 2015 tho :lol:

3 Italy - She is so beautiful. Love the "La La La La La La La" part.

2 Ukraine - I like it. It was some kind of extra hymn for Ukraine's & Poland's Euro that year. The Vuvuzela men are so fun.

1 Russia - The final iconic, cool, authentic, hoenst and unforced or overproduced Russian performance. Stories and performances like this are part of Eurovision!

Notable:

Montenegro - Yeah thaaaat's what you make out of 3 minutes when whole Europe watches you and you have the chance to either safe kids' lives or entertain :)

Latvia - Kati Wolf is so versatile! :)

Switzerland - What a creative chorus.

Denmark - Did she wear the hat just for the final?

Austria - I found it quite funny back then :lol: The #Selfie of 2012. I'm SOOOO HAPPY THEY WON the Austrian pre-selection that year, as it opened the doors for RISE LIKE A PHOENIX in 2014. Way better song AND moment for Conchita.

Ireland - Unnecessary and uninspired. Why didn't they come up with something more interesting?

What a weak first semi :o

Why does the second semi recap have the video quality of a potato?!

The Netherlands - Thank God that was so bad that the Dutch finally got their sh*t together the year after

France - Isn't like someone here on the forum fan of Anguuun? Haska? :lol:
Looks like I found my way home

Thanks for your comments and your shared Top 10s!

@heppolo
I think that this time, it's your most diverse Top 10 you have posted in my countdown so far!
Of course, you are still in favor of the quality entries again which I always appreciate about your comments and points! I'm talking about flawless and timeless Italy or The Netherlands. Underrated France and hipster-ish Hungary!
But this time you are also clearly rooting for some fun and trash entries such as Romania (Holy Cow!), Ukraine (Too disney, musical-esque, camp but perfectly sung!), Greece (fun but artifically created Eurovision-esque ska thingy. Turkey 2004 did it sooo much better)

Spain being #10 is a real surprise! I think I have never seen it inside a Top 10 by a Eurovision fan ever. I don't mind the song but it's incredibly boring if you ask me (same applies to Cyprus)

I agree on Russia, Finland, Serbia & Lithuania (even though I somehow like "Something" - It just needed a better production, it feels a bit outdated and wannabe-ish)

Belgium also got me by surprise. I still don't like the track much but Belgium was a clear non-qualifier from the beginning but he got a total makeover. His look changed drastically, his vocal performance improved a lot and also the arrangement of the song got better in time. What a surprise!

Israel not having qualified is a disgrace. I can only blame it on the dress, the juries and perhaps people not being in favor of Israel in general but seriously, this is a timeless classic, beautifully sung and should have been in the final!

I also preferred "Rhythm Of Love". She reminded me a bit of Kylie in the early Millenium. And I loved the "traditional sounding" arrangement in the chorus. It was so much fun! - However, after some time, I started to love "Solayoh" as well. It's so catchy!

@Erotica
Nice to see "Glorious" being so high! Finland, Belarus are not surprises. Nice to see France and Norway!
I'm also glad to see the UK!

@Colbie
Thanks for taking part as well! Your Top 2 is very interesting! I also liked Malta very much. It's just a pity that I can't give more than 10 countries some points. Malta would be clearly getting a few otherwise.
Estonia is a cute and little surprise (so is Switzerland and Cyprus). Nice to see Israel & Italy!
I hope you will stick with us since your Top 10 got a lot of surprises to offer!

@Tansike
No surprise when it comes to your Top 2! But do you really think that Denmark is underrated among fans? Emmelie was pretty popular and I think a lot of them were deliriously happy when she won. In my opinion, there were just a few fans being a bit pissed off that the clear favourite won once again (after Loreen the previous year) and I'm sure that Emmelie's "arrogant" attitude prior the contest pulled some fans off.
If you ask me, I like the track but it's kind of very Eurovision-esque and formulaic. In the end, I can see why it won and I don't mind Denmark winning but I think that Norway would have deserved it more, tbh.
But I'm glad I got you by surprise by putting Denmark in my Top 10. To be honest, it was struggling.. when I made my Top 10, I thought of putting the UK, Malta, France or Ukraine instead but "Only Teardops" is too catchy and too memorable to be overtaken by the mentioned countries. Emmelie's voice is also too good to not mention Denmark that year.

I agree on the Dutch entry aging very well. It's just one of those few very classy tracks which will sound fine even in 10 or 20 years. It's timeless.

I'm glad to see Germany, Azerbaijan! - Wow! You got all "Nordic/Scandinavian countries" in your Top 10! Did this happen before?

And it's really sad to see neither Loreen nor Emmelie having more success in European markets. They had SO MUCH potential. Still waiting for Heak 2.0

@Magnus
It's simply crazy how much I love "Euphoria". Obviously, I do not listen to it 30x a day like I used to but it will always have a special place in my heart.

Seeing Denmark on top is no surprise. I'm glad for you that you agree with the overall winner that year! It's indeed catchy
Moldova was great as well! It's definitely part of my Top 20. At first, I was not a huge fan of the song but it improved on me a lot during the semi-finals. Her vocal performance was stunning! I just hated the fact that she stole the dress from Sabina Babayeva (Azerbaijan 2012). The entry was unique and amazing, her vocals stunning. There was no need in copying a perfect performance from the previous year.
Norway was great! I agree with you and heppolo!
We have the same opinion on "Glorious". It's also my favourite song by Cascada!

It's also nice to see Slovenia (terrible performance, though). It was a bit underrated. She didn't deserve to come last!

Wow! So 2013 is your favourite year of all Eurovision editions according to your last.fm plays?

@Noahh
Queen Anouk being your #1 is sooo deserved!
Hungary, Belgium, Lithuania, Denmark, Germany, Norway are all fine ;) - I don't get the love for Sweden though. I thought it got a very good hook and a great production but his voice is unbearable especially when he sings "Youuuuuuuuuuuu" if you ask me. It's perhaps my personal most hated Swedish entry ever (after 2009 maybe).

@JSparksFan
So nice to see you, Akini! I love it that you are open-minded and have become a fan of the Eurovision Song Contest!
Your Top 2 is great and I love to see UK, The Netherlands! It's also interesting to see Russia. You are the first one to mention it.
Personally, I thought it was a bit basic for Russian standards (still listenable).

@stevyy
Your avatar is fierce! - I agree, Italy should have made Top 3 at least. Classic, Timeless. Marco's also my husband, btw :D

@Airwrecka
Airwreckastan got taste! Denmark, Belarus, Germany, Norway, Azerbaijan! We seem to agree on a lot of countries this time! - Estonia, San Marino, Russia, Georgia... I also liked them but they seemed a bit basic or boring to me, to some extent... they are all listenable and cute but the competition was too high in that year if you ask me.
And you don't have to be sorry for putting the actual winners as your #1s as well! I am glad you can agree with the public and the jury!

@KokoCollino
No worries, I am glad you shared your comments and thoughts on 2012! The Big 5 was indeed very strong but I also liked the semis, to be honest.
I totally agree with Loreen being the Queen of Eurovision. Her label, her team kind of **** up her career. She was meant to be huge and big in Europe. She needs to collaborate with Calvin Harris or David Guetta to finally get some attention again. I have no words on how her incredible talent got wasted.

I'm surprised to see Kaliopi being your #2! Interesting choice! "Dona" was indeed horrible.

Spain got a great vocal performance and I like Pastora a lot but it was a bit too cheesy to get a Top 5 spot, I guess.

Cyprus, Germany, Italy are all fine! - Not so sure about Norway. He failed because of horrible live vocals, a generic track and a very camp performance. Bulgaria should have made it into the final instead :D

Montenegro was fun on CD and I love the music video where he's riding the monkey and so on... but the performance was a mess! :D Like he didn't even care.

Conchita's song 2012 was horrible. She wouldn't have made the final in 2014 with such a trashy drag anthem. I'm glad she went classy instead!

@Leychen
Another guy being d'accord with the actual winner! Nice to see Denmark, Germany (Cascada got robbed!), UK, The Netherlands, Italy!
The rest of your Top 10 was listenable and enjoyable on stage as well but I never go back to listen to them, to be honest.

#6 NORWAY (5 points) Image

Margaret Berger - I Feed You My Love

Stellar production! Great vocals! Charming performer! Overall, I think that this would have been a better winning entry than Denmark. It sounded more unique, not so formulaic and less Eurovision-esque. I also liked the stripped down but effective performance. It's a dark electronic pop masterpiece!

#5 MONTENEGRO (6 points) Image

Who See - Igranka

THIS is the perfect example that juries - even though they are meant to be objective - make huge mistakes and delusional decisions as well!
"Igranka" is a fine track with hell of a production! It got contemporary dubstep elements combined with amazing dance elements. Example would be proud to have come up with such a track! - THIS not making the final thanks to the juries and the incredibly outrageous hate on Poland's entry "My Slowanie" in 2014 (which is also VERY MODERN and UNIQUE) is one of the main points of not being in need of juries in the competition after all. Sometimes they are so stubborn, old-fashioned and fukcing boring and prude! What a waste! - At least, "Igranka" was ranked #4 by the televoters! It's insane how much power the juries have to vote a #4 entry down to even make it not qualify!

#4 BELARUS (7 points) Image

Alyona Lanskaya - Solayoh

"Solayoh" is my favourite entry from Belarus ever! - "Rhythm of Love", which won the Belarussian preselection, would have been more contemporary and not so cheesy but I can't help myself, "Solayoh" is just freaking catchy, memorable and I absolutely adore it! It's basically a rehash of the peak of Ethno-Pop in Eurovision around 2003-2006 but it's superior to the most Eurovision entries because of Alyona's amazing and strong vocals. I also love the "oriental/Eastern European arrangement" in the track! - It's a shame it didn't go higher but in the end, I was happy to see it being in the final! - Trivia: It's Belarus most successful entry after "Work Your Magic".

#3 ISRAEL (8 points) Image

Moran Mazor - Rak Bishvilo

It still bothers me that this masterpiece which I consider to be one of Israel's finest entries to date didn't qualify. I know that this is not the usual happy, modern, trashy or Eurovision-esque stuff Eurovision fans seem to love.. but this is incredible! Touching! Dramatic! Stunning! - This is what I love about such classy tracks. It reminds me of "Milim" (Israel 2010) but Moran definitely delivered a better performance.
Even the juries only ranked this #9 :(

Greece 2013 is a bit different to Athena because of that old man 8-)
And the tempo of "Alcohol Is Free" is faster.
"It's my life" is basically operatic version of Verka (Cesar caught me by surpise whilst I was watching the interviews before the contest, he was waaaaay too serious)

#2 AZERBAIJAN (10 points) Image

Farid Mammadov - Hold Me

4 years in a row, Azerbaijan is part of my Top 3! Azerbaijan, despite not having reached my #1 spot a single time, has to be my favourite Eurovision country of recent editions. "Hold Me" has been my favourite entry before the contest. It's catchy, a bit dramatic and clearly an amazing power ballad performed by a good-looking singer! The performance was original, classy and turned out to be a highlight of the entire show! I'm glad he got the #2 in the real competition! During the voting, I felt like a lonely wolf in the audience because I was like cheering for Azerbaijan to win the competition again (instead of Denmark xD).
I can't wait for Azerbaijan's entry next year!

#1 ITALY (12 points) Image

Marco Mengoni - L'Essenziale

Simple and classy. Italy did it once again. They came, saw and conquered! His voice is magical and he clearly has the potential to be the next Eros Ramazzotti ! It's insane how popular he has become in Italy! Back to his entry, it's emotional, melodic and simply stunning! In my opinion, it's simply perfect.

12 Netherlands (no contest this year, would have been one of the best selling ESC songs if it won)
10 Iceland (each year there should be a rockier entry, this time it's CBeebies doing pop-punk, a hint: the intro sounds a little bit like Blur's "Country House")
8 Norway (mesmerizing ballad, the whole Norwegian national final that year was fantastic)
7 United Kingdom (best UK entry in a long time)
6 Finland (proper indie rock at last)
5 Spain (a great ballad, Ruth gave it all)
4 Hungary (sounded modern and generally an interesting topic of domestic violence touched on the ESC stage)
3 Switzerland (at first I've thought he is going to bomb live, but actually he did good)
2 Italy (actually was my number #1 before Emma decided to destroy it on stage)
1 San Marino (if Belarus-2013 transferred you to some 2003-2005, this Valentina's flick is early 1990s ESC at best, but I just love the chorus)
Greece - I actually liked it for a change
Sweden - cliched schlager
Estonia - my least favourtie Estonian entry ever, shock horror
Poland - get started, get stupid
Lithuania - actually liked it, but that tutu is gross
Belarus - Robin Thicke sounds familiar, but at least memorable
Montenegro - the climatic part is quite good
Ireland - butchered live, but still deserved to go through to the final
Azerbaijan - I actually liked their 2014 entry more than 2011-2013
Romania - sorry, that was a mess, and left me cold
Malta - amazingly both Malta/Switzerland found their way into the final whilst pundits were saying they have sort of the same market
Latvia - widely panned, but a cute song
Slovenia - severely underrated
Denmark - that trainwreck of a national final turned into a nice bland poor man's Bruno Mars
Armenia - he sounded too aggressive, even hostile
Ukraine - Maria looks pretty, but beneath all the make-up the song is meh at best
Russia - another year, another cliched song, not even close to being top 10
France - if Stromae decided to do a TV soap opera soundtrack
Portugal - not that bad at all
Austria - I actually wanted it to be a James Bond soundtrack more than a ESC winner, still a classic

Mainshow wrote:Wow! So 2013 is your favourite year of all Eurovision editions according to your last.fm plays?
No, I have exactly zero plays on Last.FM, never used it like that. But I've logged my listening with my own software since 2000 so for me that's even better (although it may be more difficult to prove that I'm not just making it up :wink:). Actually, I've never tried adding the plays for all ESC songs per year (if I remember I'll do next year!), but just looking at the top 10 my best guess is that yeah, 2013 is probably #1 even though it doesn't have the most played song. It's definitely the year where my interest in ESC as a whole reached its peak.

2014 was a quite boring year for me (with just two songs above 100 plays) so I'll just do a quick list of my top 10 without any comments:

12 points: Slovenia
10: Sweden
8: Netherlands
7: Russia
6: Ireland
5: Portugal
4: UK
3: Estonia
2: Ukraine
1: Norway

I am out of words to explain my love, worship and adoration for Marco Mengoni. He is my alltime favourite artist out of any artist that has ever existed and will ever exist. He slayed me so hard ever since I discovered him on ESC 2013. It was destiny. Both of his 2015 albums sh!t on anything released by anyone ever. Glad to see him slaying your countdown.

Conchita Wurst - Rise Like A Phoenix

Like 2013, the winning entry of Eurovision didn't do that much for me. Don't get me wrong... I like listening to it and I also think that Conchita delivered an incredible vocal performance but I'd have preferred other countries to win the competition.

In the end, I'm glad that Conchita won, especially after all those nasty comments by European politicans or priests blaming Conchita's victory for the tragic floods in the Balkan region. LGTB people still have to suffer, we are still far away from being treated with respect. Equality hasn't been reached yet. Conchita's victory made it all more visible again and I was deliriously happy to learn about her performance in front of the European Union. We Europeans should finally value equality, diversity and establish defining laws in ALL EU members!

That being said, "Rise Like a Phoenix" is a very classy Bond-esque anthem. Powerful, sexy, mysterious and empowering! Deserved winner (but not among my favourites to win the contests). Btw, Conchita's debut album is surprisingly amazing! So diverse and different from what you would expect!

Ruth Lorenzo - Dancing In The Rain

When I listened to it for the very first time, I had to think of Ukraine's entry the previous year. "Dancing In The Rain" reminds me of "Gravity" because of it being quite cheesy, balladesque and reminiscent of Disney. However, I prefer this to "Gravity" because of its more current arrangement. Also, Ruth's voice is brilliant on the track and the former X-Factor UK contestant gave a hell of a performance in Copenhagen! That rain on stage was absolutely stunning! - She clearly deserved to be Top 10 - in Eurovision and on my list.

Btw, it's the first time that Spain appears on my Top 10 since 2007.

Surprised about your #1 from 2013. I never got the love for Italy over the last few years, they always seem so overrated.

2014 was a great year. Weird that they had a theme song there, but never again since then. "Rainmaker" was actually my favorite song of the ESC 2014, even if it wasn't one of the entries :oops:

12 - Austria (another year, another winner being my favorite as well. Fantastic vocal performance from Conchita, great song)
10 - Sweden
8 - Hungary
7 - Netherlands
6 - Germany
5 - UK
4 - Israel
3 - Spain
2 - Switzerland
1 - Norway

I have the same problem with Italy, somehow most of their entries were bad or boring for me
I am not trying to seduce you... Would you like me to seduce you? Is that what you're trying to tell me?

Personally, I think that Italy is one of the finest countries in Eurovision. They have always sent timeless entires of class and high quality. They do not really age, they are exceptionally brilliant and totally different to what the other countries submit to the Eurovision stage. They bring something new, different and worth listening to the table and I'm really glad that they are back.
It's difficult to compare Italy's score on my ALLTIME RANKING to the other countries because they had a break of 13 years but they already sit on #11 with only 4 eligible entries so far. I guess, it's one of my favourite countries in Eurovision.

Hopefully, you'll get into their music soon (or Italy will surprise you two soon within the upcoming years).
