JAM Chain stuff is rather underwhelming so far. They can't even be bothered to make a full new album (6 of the tracks were done before in previous guises). Hoping the presence of Sky Ferreira lifts it a little at least.

We'll see. Personally, I'm glad to have them around, but think that expecting stuff at the level of thirty years ago is probably unwise.

I'll certainly concede that Always Sad - which, rather disturbingly, has just come on the radio as I type - sounds like a not-so-distant cousin of 1994's Sometimes Always.

An unlikely fifth week at number one for Stretch Your Eyes precipitates logjam at the top of the chart, but a substantial debut from the returning alt-J now offers a significant new threat (#11): also reappearing - after some considerable time away - are Ride, with the surprisingly strong Charm Assault (#19). These head up four further chart entries in the shape of Chali 2na (Charles Stewart from Jurassic 5 - #33), Cabbage (#36), Tom Williams (#39) and Superfood (#40). RBCF (as they will doubtless become known) boast the week's biggest jump at #17 (+17), with the J&MC also improving by ten places (#27). Here's the countdown:

39 NE 39 01 Everyone Needs a Home – Tom Williams
40 NE 40 01 Double Dutch – Superfood
Gibraltar Ape has the good old guitar-based indie, I don't think it is catchy enough for me, but still a decent song
Supefood's song is properly produced, solid material.
Tom Williams' message is deeper than it may seem at first sight

(The new Top 40 appears a day early this week, since I’m away for the weekend...) So, alt-J leapfrog the entire Top Ten after just one week on the survey, with the next three tracks all slipping a place to accommodate them into pole position. It’s a week for big climbs, as Ride (#6, +13), Chali 2na (#15, +18), Cabbage (#16, +20) and Tom Williams (#29, +10) all also claim double-figure movement. In terms of the new entries, no major surprises with six of the seven artists following up recent Top 20 hits: the only genuine chart newcomers are Moonlandingz – but even some of this act have already appeared via Fat White Family’s October outing Breaking into Aldi. (Not that I'm underselling, or anything.) Here’s the lowdown:

Indeed, both have a strong sense of the nostalgic about them: Girl Ray remind me of The Marine Girls and their ilk.

New chart imminent...

While the leading titans hold firm, a further five climbers within the Top 10 suggests that this is unlikely to last: Chali 2na and RBCF look especially strong, the latter last week having joined the elite group of artists improving on the performance of their previous outing. (The lower end of the chart, on the other hand, sees a clutch of acts thus far suffering diminishing returns.) Moonlandingz boast the biggest climb (#26, +13), while four new songs show in the bottom ten of the list. Here they come:

(Happy Easter all - better late than never...) After remaining neck-and-neck all week, Chali 2na and his pals just pip alt-J to snatch the top spot. Elsewhere, two records are broken: Amber Arcades's 25-place leap (#9) topples Agnes Obel's Golden Green to claim the biggest climb since the chart returned, while a nineteenth week on the survey for Run The Jewels's Talk To Me (#39) also beats Agnes O's previous longevity haul. She Drew The Gun boast the highest of four new entries with their follow-up to the chart-topping Since You Were Not Mine (#25), Weed 'em and reap...

Yep, the Afghans' single is really growing on me. The rap tracks don't generally get much of a reception, it's true. Ah well. (That said, it's going to have to go some to hold onto the top spot again this week.)

She Drew The Gun's latest has an interesting Lone Justice-esque flavour to it. As we speak, it's set to make something of a climb in the next chart...

After another close-run week, alt-J's 3WW becomes the first track to reclaim the number-one position - however, the bright, breezy pop of Amber Arcades looks set to displace them next time out. Six new cuts make the chart this week, with all of last week's entries boasting climbs of more than ten places: She Drew The Gun (#11, +14); Afghan Whigs (#20, +13); Haley Bonar (#23, +15); The xx (#26, +14). Thurston Moore also follows up last week's impressive rise of 22 places with a further eleven-place climb (#7). Here are those numbers...

Well, like I said upthread, that's going to happen now and again. Francobollo's Kinky Lola is a case in point, as it didn't chart here until something like four months after its release date. (Bear in mind that LC's previous, The Isle of Arran, only dropped off the list about a month ago...)

(Similarly, High and Gritty by Hempolics is currently bubbling under - and that's been out since March.)

'Dutch' seems to be the flavour of the week, with the Uncles, Superfood's 'double' and now Netherlands exports Amber Arcades hitting the summit. PSB's latest boasts the biggest jump (#4, +18) and looks the most serious threat to Annelotte de Graaf and co. Afghan Whigs repeat their thirteen-place leap of last week, while Clark (#10, + 11) and The xx (#15, +11) also fare well again. Seven new cuts are headed by Grandaddy (#18) - who look set to claim a third Top 10 entry from their comeback album. US-alt legends are abounding, with Thurston Moore, Greg Dulli and now Mark Lanegan all charting - all it needs is for J Mascis, Lou Barlow or maybe even Gibby Haynes to make an appearance...

Amber Arcades hold onto the top spot, however eight climbers within the Top 10 suggests that this might indeed 'change' before too long. Just the four new tunes this week, but plenty of impressive climbs, including Grandaddy (#6, +12); Kendrick Lamar (#8, +15); Mark Lanegan (#17, +16); Conor Oberst (#18, +18); and DJ Format & Abdominal (#23, +14). Here 'tis:

Yes, one of the best tracks on the album, IMO.

At the risk of repeating myself, I like to keep spaces open for new-ish music, which - as long as it's recent, current or imminent - is eligible for this Top 40. (The way albums/tracks are promoted these days - ie, compared to the straight-forward manner in which singles were released from albums in the past - it's almost impossible for songs to have a natural chart life anyway. I guess non-major labels must realise that there's almost zero chance of this in national Top 40s nowadays.) So, while there are certain restrictions in this Top 40, that isn't one of them.

All that said, US's second album Modern English Decoration is out next month and Full of Men is indeed on the radar, so could well join its predecessor - which IMO is much the better cut - in the chart.

With PSB and the Whigs stalling, Amber Arcades help themselves to a third week at the summit. Ghostpoet's disquieting Immigrant Boogie crashes in at #12 to head seven new songs - including those by Manchester's Birth Marks (#38) and London's Hempolics (#40), both of which finally make the cut after some weeks of release. The erstwhile slow-burning Ulrika Spacek now enjoy the biggest jump (#18, +19) - with DJ Format & Abdominal (#13, +10), Warpaint (#16, +14), Feist (#20, +14) and Taos Humm (#21, +15) also faring well...

Despite leading the chasing pack for much of the week, PSB relinquish pole position to Afghan Whigs at the death - as erstwhile champs Amber Arcades spin out of the Top Five completely. With the second cut from their upcoming Relaxer album, alt-J claim the week's biggest climb (#9, +17), with double-figure jumps also for Ulrika Spacek (#8, +10), Kate Tempest (#23, +12) and Hempolics (#30, +10). A mixed bag of new entries are led by Life at #25. This is also the first week since last July that Agnes Obel hasn't featured in some shape or form on the Top 40... Here are the stats:
