Jah's Weekly Top 40

A bumper eight new entries for this week's 'anniversary' chart (re-emerged 10/9/16) - headed by the return of Kurt and Courtney (#18), plus Beck (#23) and This Is The Kit (#32), whose latest track pushes the previous back up a place (#29). Shadow claims a first chart-topper here since Midnight in a Perfect World back in 1996, although Jane Weaver looks good odds with the week's biggest climber (#4, +16): Francobollo (#10, +11) and Liars (#17, +11) also fare well. (I had considered posting a Top 60 this week to mark the occasion - but you can have too much of a good thing, eh..?)

what!?
you were right :o
are you clairvoyant
then you probably guess/know that out of your 8 new entries i don't mind one at all

my favourite is Ride one
(i'm always skeptic about bands reunion, but this one didn't disappoint me not a little bit,
always wonder to myself why Andy Bell, (after the demise of Oasis) was wasting his time with a less talented brother in that horrible band (maybe i am too harsh, but the opinion stands)

return of Kurt and Courtney
oh i miss the original pair :(
(this one is good too)

btw Coutney Barnett partner Jen Cloher is also a singer
(her great new single Forgot Myself with Courtney in the video)

Agree, that is very fine - hadn't seen the promo until now. (Bubbling under as we speak...)

Yep, good to have Ride back with some original material - although the current isn't as strong as the previous pair of cuts from Weather Diaries, IMO. Agree with the opinion about Hurricane #1, as well - not really my cuppa, that. (Or did you mean Oasis? They'd jumped the shark by the time Andy Bell rocked up, yes.)

no, no, no
Hurricane was before Oasis,
less talented brother is Liam,
and the band is Beady eye

Courtney & Kurt shoot down everything in their path to take this week's top spot - however, their seventeen-place rise isn't the week's best: this goes to This Is The Kit, whose Hotter Colder blasts into the Top 20 (#14, +18). Good moves also for Beck (#11, +12); Son Of Sam (#22, +11); and Royal Blood (#24, +10). Four new tracks are headed by Kate Tempest (#26), whose failure to win last night's Mercury Prize will remain a mystery to most of us for a long old time...

Most likely there is darkness at the end of that tunnel. At least, judging by the lyrical content of Kate's recent work.

A second week on top for 'the new Moldy Peaches' - Courtney & Kurt - with This Is The Kit (#4, +10) looking the strongest mover in the Top Ten. The biggest climb, however, is Cid Rim at #15 (+15), with LCD Soundsystem (#14, +13) also performing well. Seven new songs enter the Top Forty, with one re-entry also back in the fold...

For a third consecutive week, the top two remain 'as is', while This Is The Kit, Beck and Cid Rim provide the most immediate competition. The week's biggest climb is claimed by Belle & Sebastian (#22, +15), just edging UNKLE (#9, +14) and Jen Cloher (#26, +13): Mr Jukes also improves by ten places (#18), while the highest new entry for some weeks comes courtesy of Prophets Of Rage (#13). A fourth week atop the chart for Courtney and Kurt - and seven new entries, headed by Loyle Carner (fresh from a triumphant 6Music stint) at #17. Wu-Tang enjoy the biggest climb (#20, +16), with Daughter (#16, +11), Everything Everything (#24, +11) and John Murry (#28, +12) also blagging jumps of more than ten places. (Pretty much a year now since I started publishing the chart on UK Mix: for your info only - there ain't no birthday cake...)

Prophets Of Rage just about edge CB & KV for top spot, with a number of tunes looking strong competition for next week's summit. Five new entries include two in the Top 15 - a third hit from their new album for Mogwai (#9 - only the second Top 10 newcomer this year) and a fourth from theirs for alt-J (#15). Among the other chart debuts are Breeders (#39), with their first new material for eight years. Yak have the biggest climber this week (#25, +14), with Loyle Carner (#7, +10) and Wu-Tang (#8, +12) also improving strongly...

A belated chart, but with a new number one courtesy of Mogwai, who become the first act to score a second chart-topper during 2017: the song is dedicated to my old mate (and Mogwai fan) Sean Hughes, who passed away on Monday. Breeders have not only the week's biggest climber (#11, +28), but the biggest thus far since the chart returned a year ago. (The only other climb of ten places comes via Confidence Man at #28.) Five newcomers are led by Floating Points who follow their recent number-one with Ratio at #22. Those stats in full:

Mogwai keep a firm hold on top spot, with Breeders consolidating on last week's giant leap to pose the biggest threat at #3. This week's biggest climber, however, is Jane Weaver at #15 (+22), with Floating Points (#9, +13), Omni (#19, +16) and Tusks (#22, +16) also performing admirably. Just the four new entries, headed by a welcome return for Charlotte Gainsbourg at #23 and former Mansun front man Paul Draper at #32...

The tightest of all margins keeps Mogwai ahead of the Breeders in this week's chart, with Floating Points a way back at #3 and Charlotte Gainsbourg vaulting into the Top Ten to claim the week's biggest climber (#8, +15). Other Creatures also move strongly with Luxembourg at #21 (+12). Six new entries are led by a somewhat-uncompromising Eno & Shields collaboration at #20. Those stats in full:
