Bodega remain incredulous at the top of the pile, with the Whigs perhaps surprisingly consolidating in second... Beck has the first Top 20-entry for a few weeks (#14), while further back sees a welcome return for the all-new sounding Parquet Courts (#27)... Car Seat Headrest become the first act to chart five songs since the Top 40 returned in the late summer of 2016 (#29), albeit with a reworked tune... The haunting Wye Oak have the biggest climb for the second week running (#10, +14), while Palace Winter (#6, +10), Gaz Coombes (#13, +10), Arcade Fire (#17, +10), Goat (#21, +11) and lié (#24, +10) all take manful strides upwards... The stats:

Bodega do it again for a third week, while the majority of last week's Top Five are blown out of the water... Several tracks make decent moves, in particular Parquet Courts (#11) and Gwenno (#21), both of whom rise by sixteen places: also on the move are Beck (#2, +12) - looking a good bet for the top - and the uncompromising Goat (#6, +15)... In terms of newcomers, Drenge return to the Top 20 after a three-year absence (#19), plus four other debuting tunes, including the latest from Haley (Bonar - #39) - who seems to have shed her surname... Now read on:

As expected, Beck bags the top slot for a first number one on this chart in almost two decades - and his third overall (Where It's At [1996] and Tropicalia [1999] turned the trick before, while nine further singles made the Top 10)... Drenge (#8, +11) and Protomartyr (#15, +10) represent this week's major movers... Eight new entries are topped and tailed by a first hit for Doncaster three-piece The Blinders (#23) - and a first in two years for Norwich duo Let's Eat Grandma (#39)... Those positions:

The new material doesn't have nearly the impact of what they were doing a decade ago, but I do think that much of the recent criticism has been a little, well, 'overstated'.

Well, as with Ulrika Spacek last year, the success of the current track might well bring the previous cut into the Top 40.

As for four chart-toppers from one album, I don't think that that's ever happened on this chart, although - if you count the 2011 CD edition, which includes Upside Down - the J&MC managed three (and a number two) from Psychocandy.

Thanks for the comments, both of you, and thanks for following the chart.

Beck streaks ahead for a second week at the top... Breeders crash into the Top Ten with the third cut from their All Nerve long-player - thereby giving Kelley Deal a second outing on the list... Beck maintains his place at the summit, with Kim, Kelly and co breeding down his neck at #2... Other siblings doing well include the Loveless brothers moving up to #3, and those enduring Hartnolls, who claim the week's best climb (#15, +14)... Strong moves also for ASG (#11, +10), The Lovely Eggs (#24, +11), Childish Gambino (#28, +10) and Bad Breeding (#29, +10)... Underworld - with help from Iggy - join the apparent nineties-love-in (#22), while, after three weeks hovering between 41-50, Melody's Echo Chamber make a stirring re-entry at #31... The stats:

A fourth week atop for Beck, ahead of something of a log-jam across the top seven tracks (only Wye Oak's unlikely reversal with Drenge prevents a clean sweep of non-movers)... Five new entries include two bands following-up recent-ish number ones - Drahla (#27) and Bodega (#32) - sandwiching an artist who scored three chart-toppers with an earlier band in Gruff Rhys (#30)... The resurgent Melody's Echo Chamber (#14, +17) and BOYTOY (#22, +17) share the biggest climb, with Underworld & Iggy (#12, +10), Christine & The Queens (#18, +15), RBCF (#24, +14) also performing well... (At the other end of the spectrum, Slug's spectacular plunge (#34, -21) represents the biggest drop since the chart returned...) Those figures in full:

I forgot to include this Gruff Rhys song in my chart back in April. I should definitely fix it.
Decent effort from Michael Rault.

Beck is finally dethroned after a month at the top, enabling Breeders to score a second chart-topper from their All Nerve album, following last year's Wait in the Car (while the title cut disgraced itself by peaking only at #9 in March)... Drahla bag the week's biggest climb (#10, +17), just ahead of Bodega (#16, +16)... Also scaling the chart at some rate are (once again) Melody's Echo Chamber (#3, +11), Jungle (#26, +11) and Michael Rault (#28, +12)... Of the six new tracks, Simian Mobile Disco head the way with their haunting collaboration (#29)... Update as follows:

Nice one, but I prefer the experimental nature of ''If the Car Beside You Moves Ahead''

Indeed, number one here on 14/4. It had far more impact, it's true.

New chart to follow...

the link for Francobollo is sadly not working,
New Johnny Marr stuff is alright, yet there's nothing grounbreaking.
