What would a Spice Girls top 10 be without this anthem. Yes, I'm just calling it an anthem and think everyone needs a bit of Spice in their life After the more serious #4 and #5, this song really shows the fun side of the group. Released as the lead single of Spice World, they couldn't have made a more perfect choice to be honest. It's bold, fun, loud- so basically everything the Spice Girls were about back in the day. I was actually in shock when I just found out this only peaked at #18 in the US, as I always assumed this was a massive #1 hit all over the world.Every boy and every girl
Spice up your life
Ah, really? I always assumed everyone loved this song as much as I did It is so iconic! Glad to read you liked the other two, though.Erotica wrote:Hm secretly I hoped it's outside the top 10 but overall I was sure it will be high. The weakest single from their second album in my opinion and definitely not one of my favourites from them
I know, right!? 20 years on and still a smashhhh thoughJakeP wrote:Spice up your life is such a great party track, to think this song is now 20 years old. It was one of those songs that got played a lot over the festive season back in 1997.
I will!!Mainshow wrote:Oh! You really should visit Poland someday! The country has a lot to offer!
And I will take it into consideration to do a Spice Girl's "Diva Countdown" as well
It seems that I have to catch up. I missed so many great singles!
"Say You'll Be There" - I can totally understand why you want to describe the song as "iconic" and tbh, I think that I will use that word a zillion times when I will be hosting a "Mainshow Goes Diva: Britney Spears" edition - When it comes to the Spice Girls, their career has been quite short but all their singles had an impact on pop culture; that's why "iconic" is a great word to choose!
It was really cute to read that you had a crush on Gerri's look - Personally, I think that "Say You'll Be There" is one of their finest singles. The music video is indeed great (I have always prefered music videos shot in nature/"real settings"). I prefer this video to "Spice Up Your Life" a lot!
"Wannabe" was huge and it's still iconic but I personally think it's slightly overrated. Don't get me wrong, I like it but I prefer other Spice Girls tracks and singles to it; that's why I am glad it didn't make your Top 5
OMG! I do remember the wolves in "Goodbye"'s music video! - I love the track but I agree, Spice Girls without Geri was not the same but this track is an exception!
"2 Become 1" - What a masterpiece! - I discovered the track when I borrowed the "Best of 97" CD of my mother because I didn't own their first album back then. However, I love the chorus and the deep melody. It makes the song very special! - And I was the same like you as a kid! - I sang along English tracks without knowing a single word in English haha
OMG "Spice Up Your Life"!!! - That track is the reason why I started to love the Spice Girls in the first place. It's super trashy, camp but also epic as hell. A pop masterpiece! - I disagree with you on its music video, though. And that's just because of the reason I mentioned: I don't like music videos with a lot of effects and a science-fiction / much edited setting. Btw, that's also why I don't love Britney's "Toxic" video (compared to 99,9% of the rest of Britney fans).
Anyway, EPIC and I-C-O-N-I-C countdown so far! - I hope "Viva Forever" will win this, though!
Stop is to date the only Spice Girls single that missed the #1 position in the UK (or, it was, until Headlines happened- but let's just forget about that ) and that still makes me a bit sad. Because to me, this has to be one of their best singles. In fact, since it ended in my countdown at #2, there is only one single I prefer. But back to Stop, this song screams Spice Girls. It's fun and funky, cheeky, poppy and very very camp. I mean, what's not to love about that combination? You just walk in, I make you smile
It's cool, but you don't even know me
...Viva Forver, ofcourse!! Not only a career highlight of the Spice Girls, but in fact one of my favourite song of all time. Viva Forever, to me, is the definition of a magical song, it has just something special and can still make me emotional- even after all those years. It already starts with the Spanish-guitar sounding intro and goes on all throughout the song. It is just a very moving song, and as much as I love their big and campy song, I do think the girls created some magic with their ballads. This has be their most critically acclaimed song and to me it shows that you don't have to belt (or scream) to record a powerful ballad that will touch people. The touch of your skin, giving life from within
Like a love song that I'd heard
Yay!! Good to see you liking my top twoErotica wrote:So glad Stop is so high, one of my favourites <3 or even my favourite song from them
Viva forever is so great too
maybe missed Mama in the countdown
Yeahh <33JakeP wrote:YES Fan.
Viva forever will forever be my favourite Spice Girls song. I bought it on cd single and it came with those old cd-rom videos so you could play the music video on a computer.
This followed Goodbye would've the perfect way to conclude the Spice Girls story and i think they would've been more fondly remembered. I've pretty much disregarded the existence of album #3 and Headlines as the magic was lost with these releases.
Stop was a good single too but i think the girls started promoting the song in the UK too early. Iirc they were promoting the song when Spiceworld and Too much were still fresh, and then there was quite a wait before the fans could buy the song on cd single. Still, to only miss out on #1 once between 1996 and 2000 wasn't nothing short of extraordinary.
Erotica wrote:For sure Sweet 7 missed the top 10
Great choice! My favourite girlgroup I would say. I still really miss them :/
There are definitely a few of their #1's that didn't make me countdownJakeP wrote:Looking forward to this one Fan.
Sugababes were so successful throughout the 00s and as you know 5 of their UK #1s have made it into my top 100 countdown.
Hole in the head and Round round have already gone. It will be interesting to see where these rank in your chart. That is of course if they make your countdown. Sugababes had a couple of great singles that didn't top the charts.
Walk this way for #1
So, let's start the countdown! At #10 we find the song that introduced Amelle to the world: Red Dress. Originally recorded with Mutya, but re-recorded when she left the band and released as the 'official first Sugababes 3.0' single. And if you don't respect it, I'll kick with my Jimmy Choo's
Just like Red Dress, Denial also was the third single of an album and at the same time- an instant favourite of mine when I got Change. I immediately thought it was such a 'cool' track. It has a pop sound, with a kind of dark and moody twist and that what makes it special for me. It's quite an addictive tune as well as I remember playing it loads when I just got the album. I actually never realised VV Brown co-wrote this song Just saw it on Wiki, although it makes sense as I have loved quite a lot of her stuff.I didn't wanna fall in love with you, I didn't wanna know the things I knew
Yay for the Red Dress love!JakeP wrote:Red dress is an excellent way to start the countdown. I loved this song a lot at the time.
I'd actually forgotten about Denial. But it is a great track and helped keep the momentum of the album going strong.
Change had quite a few good singles, to be honest! I won't say if I would agree with it being the best single though, as I still have eight songs to revealErotica wrote:Red Dress is a great song, love it, and it was on my favourite album
Denial was the best single from Change, but that was easy
We are never going to agree on Britney stuff it seems Atleast we both agree that Britney is a legend <3 And Everytime is the best thing she has ever done and will ever do.Mainshow wrote:So we really have to agree to disagree when it comes to Britney('s "Toxic" music video) but I am glad we kind of agree on the Spice Girls Top 2! It's amazing and both songs are incredible! - "Stop" deserved to be a #1 single in the UK!
But you're number-one is one of the best songs ever when it comes to pop music in general! - I mean, we high-fived in Den Haag when we found out that we share the same favourite but it's really great to know that you appreciate the song the same way as I do! - I agree! The song itself, the whole story about Geri leaving the band, etc, it's bittersweet and so tragic somehow. The song is a great track to mend a heart or two
I am so glad you have decided to continue with the Sugababes! Tbh, I don't know any album tracks but their singles are amazing! Their greatest hits album is one of the best best-of records available! - And what a great start! "Red Dress" is incredible!
Since you wrote about Mutya leaving the band...can you tell me why she did it? - I can't remember.
"Denial" is a lovely track but "Red Dress" should be higher - Btw, it seems you love Sugababes 3.0. - Hope to see some Jade somewhere!
She was indeed, before they got their big break. Strange to think, not?Mainshow wrote:OMG!!!! I Just read that Heidi was part of Atomic Kitten!!!! Oo
Yaay!! You also like the video? <3JSparksFan wrote:Yay at "Spice Up Your Life" ranking so high! It's my favourite Spice Girls song.
After two fairly recent songs, we go a bit more old school with Stronger. Released as the third single of their second (and first with Heidi) album. Stronger is for me a typical Sugababes 2.0 song, it has a laidback, slightly R&B sound which showcased their vocals pretty perfectly. Looking back, it is actually a rather grown up song, since the girls themselves were still very young when they released this!I had my ups and downs
trials and tribulations
