OK my turn to jump on the bandwagon!

I'll post blocks of 10 songs a day from my Top 40 of the year for you to discuss and then the Top 10 will be posted in seperate posts with my reviews of the tracks alongside them.

I have compiled this chart from my personal chart using the points system; 40 points for #1, 39 points for #1 and so on...

The first set of numbers is the end of year chart placing, the second set is the highest chart position of that song and the points are in the brackets.

Here's the first set...

40 01 (233) Gwen Stefani - What You Waiting For?
39 02 (234) Michael Gray - The Weekend

I was never a Beverley Knight fan before 2004, though previous singles such as "Greatest Day" and "Shoulda Woulda Coulda" were very nice pop songs IMO. Then, last summer, I started to notice her a lot more and couldn't get this song out of my head for weeks! Her performance at the Olympic Torch concert certified my love for it and the funky intro which builds up to the anthematic chorus makes "Come As You Are" an irresistibly catchy hit which spurred me to buy her just as excellent album!

OK I know it's a chav tune, but the first time I heard "Take Me To The Clouds Above" I thought it was genius! It marked the beginning of a brilliant year for Dance in 2004 and Rachel McFarlane does the Whitney vocal pretty well IMO. The video was also very entertaining, I used to like catching glimpses of the bog-eyed manbeast every now and then!

Here's a lovely photo of her for good measure!

Totally agreed on Jennifer Ellison, "Jump", Peter Andre, Destiny's Child, Khia (should be much higher), Christina Milian, Michelle (to an extent), DJ Casper, "Love Machine" and LMC - they're all awful!

Oh... hang on - this is your FAVOURITE songs? :o :o :o :o

Guess we just don't agree on this year, Michael ;-)

Woo for Bev, Streets, Rachel, Stonebridge and "Amazing" though - all brilliant songs!

I love the way this song starts off with what you imagine to be the chorus and then launches into a bridge and then the real chorus kicks in. I was highly anticipating new Girls Aloud material this year and "The Show" is better than I imagined it would be! Such a hooky bridge and chorus, it's pure electropop at its very best and should've been #1 for ages!

I don't think there's ever been a woman criticised so much for her pop career, but Victoria Beckham couldn't have recorded a better single than "Let Your Head Go" IMO! "This Groove" was always the weaker of the two tracks for me but I still love it. She does the whole dance/pop thing surprisingly well and I was anticipating more from her this year, but sadly it looks as if she'll never sing again! If Posh was a liked woman in this country, I reckon this would've been #1 no problem.

Even though he's universally hated on UKMIX, I really really liked this single! "Burn" and all the other tripe off the album is horrible, but "Yeah!" thoroughly deserved to do well. Even though I can't really stand Usher and his massive ego he does make a good record every now and then - plus the style of this song has influenced "Goodies" by Ciara which is another quality record!
