Thanks for the comments ! :D

Benny wrote:'Calling America' is one of my favourite ELO songs, what a shame that it wasn't as successful as most of their other songs!
I think in 1986 they were kind of 'out'. :(
It's one of my favourites too - and I think you're right. I was trying to remember other hits they had in the UK in the late 80s, and couldn't come up with any. Checking the Official Chart archive, it was their last top forty entry - there was then only "So Serious" and "Getting To The Point" which just made it to 77 and 97 respectively. And it had been three years since their previous big UK hit, "Rock 'N' Roll Is King" . . . . .

cheapthrills wrote:I only recognize The Final Countdown. I feel like I don't know the 80s at all
Most of the others were chart hits somewhere - although not necessarily very big ones, nor in the UK or other major territories ! The interesting thing about "The Final Countdown" is that it reached number one in my chart in October 1986, which was two months before it got to number one in the UK ! It had been released a few months earlier, and been massively successful, in other European countries, including the Netherlands.

Their biggest singles chart success in the UK and other countries was another TV theme, the one from "Harry's Game" - which also did better in my chart, peaking at number 13. "Robin" didn't improve on its entry position of 47 this month !

However, the most successful Clannad track on my chart wasn't even a single, but an album track I discovered quite by chance some time after its original 1973 release:

Now . . . . . in the past, I have always waited until all the tracks first released in a particular calendar year have dropped out of my monthly top forty before compiling a chart of the year. The reasoning is that they continue to score points towards their grand total for as long as they remain in the monthly top forty. However, at the end of last year I did give an undertaking to try to catch up with all the recent years for which I hadn't yet posted an annual chart in the opening months of 2018, starting with 2012 - so we now reach 2017.

Inevitably, then, this is only a first look at my chart of that year - because almost all of the tracks that most impressed me from 2017 are still in my chart now ! And it may take quite some further time for them all to drop out - particularly those still riding high and/or climbing, such as Ed Sheeran's "Perfect" and Dua Lipa's "Homesick", both of which are currently in my top three. Those two, and probably several others, will certainly eventually rise to much higher positions for the year as a whole.

However, I think the top two of 2017 at present are sufficiently far ahead of everything else (and are still gaining a few extra points as they approach the end of their time in the top forty) that nothing is likely to displace them. Everything else, though, is still subject to change before finalisation, in maybe a year to eighteen months' time ! So here is the way 2017 - yet another desperately poor recent year for new music - was for me (so far!) . . . . .

'Scared of the Dark' was my second favourite song of 2017. 'Symphony' is simply beautiful!
Overplay killed 'Feel It Still' and 'Perfect' for me. Regarding the latter I preferred the duet version with Andrea Bocelli.

I don't know if you receive any of the BBC television channels in continental Europe - but over the Christmas and New Year period parts of "Symphony" (especially the opening bars) were used extensively between programmes, in promotional previews and accompanying the main channels' announcements. This must have been very useful financially to the band - and of course they currently have another chart-topper over here, and also in Ireland.

It was interesting that one of the duet partners was Andrea Bocelli - as I think he had been one of the first artists to record the same track with different singers to be promoted in different countries. He was doing this as long ago as 1995 - for example, with this one:

Oh, they do - but, like so many other acts that used to be big some time ago, the music consumers of the UK and other countries seem to have decided that they are now just albums-chart artists ! They promoted "One More Time" as a single in Belgium (the link I used was for a live performance of it on one of that country's biggest radio stations) but it still couldn't quite reach the official top fifty there. And I think at least one other track from their latest album was promoted in the UK - but naturally without success in this current streaming-dominated environment.

Now, time for the second retro chart of this month. Thirty-seven years ago, I was sixteen years old, and had just sat my first "A" level (Maths) and tenth "O" level (Computer Studies). I was only tuning in to the chart shows of the UK and Ireland - and these were the hits that i was especially enjoying :

I never knew until today that the performers of the new entry at 30, when their record was released in the Netherlands, were credited as "Supreme" instead of "Enigma". Perhaps there was a copyright issue there with the latter name !

Thanks again, Benny - all of those made it to number one in the official charts of at least one country, although the one by Raffaella Carra was the only one that went to number one in my chart. Indeed, excluding the very first chart, it was the first single that entered my chart at number one !

The Bucks Fizz song is certainly my favourite UK winner - although we have only had one since, in 1997. I doubt that there will be any more any time soon !

Now - another month has gone by, and once again there haven't been any impressive recent releases that have become available on CD or vinyl. But there is a new number one in my new chart . . . . .

Last month there were two joint Rapid Risers – “The Carnival Is Over” by the Seekers and “Homesick” by Dua Lipa. This time, the former single retains that title, racing up another thirteen places to number sixteen – while the latter climbs two places to become my new, and 233rd number one. Although the 22-year-old singer/songwriter has had two other chart-toppers in the UK, with “New Rules” and “One Kiss”, neither of them has even reached my top forty breakers. Her only other appearance there was with “Be The One”, which went on to spend eleven months in my chart, and peaked at number nine. “Homesick” features uncredited vocals from Chris Martin of Coldplay – who had three top forty hits, including the number one “Viva La Vida”. So this becomes his second chart-topper. Eight other tracks are moving up this month – but none of them are in the top five, which contains all three of the hits occupying the same positions in July as they did in June. Jasper Steverlinck spends a fourth month at number five with “Here’s To Love”, Pink holds on to the number four spot for a fourth month with “Beautiful Trauma”, and Ed Sheeran remains the runner up with “Perfect”.

Completing the top five, last month’s number one from Rondo Veneziano, “San Marco” slides to number three – that’s one of twenty-five hits going down, but, unusually, none of them drop very significantly at all. Declines of four places each to 13, 14, 25, 31 and 32 for “Feel It Still”, “Katchi”, “Little Hollywood”, “On My Mind” and “Tuesday” respectively mean that Portugal. The Man, Ofenbach featuring Nick Waterhouse, Alle Farben and Janieck, Disciples and Burak Yeter featuring Danelle Sanoval are all joint fastest fallers. All of this (lack of) movement leaves room for just two new entries. One of the most well-known of many compositions by the late Henry Mancini, his theme from “The Pink Panther”, sneaks in at number 40 - while last month’s Chartbuster arrives ten places higher for Lost Frequencies and Zonderling. This number 30 debut for “Crazy” is actually the lowest for a former Chartbuster since October 2010, when Jacqueline Govaert arrived at number 35 with the perhaps appropriately titled “Overrated” – that went on to become the only Chartbuster of the past fifteen years that didn't reach the top twenty, when it peaked at number 21. But of course “Crazy” may – or may not – improve on that in the months ahead. Among eleven current hits that have already spent more than a year in the top forty (!), the longest laster is now “Hear Me Now” from Alok and Bruno Martini featuring Zeeba. That former Chartbuster and former number one slides two places to 36 as it makes its fifteenth appearance.

It is thirty-five years since I first heard the Dutch top forty chart show on Friday afternoon, then presented by Lex Harding. This week saw the arrival of only the fifth new regular presenter since then, as Ivo Van Breukelen succeeded Erik De Zwart, Gijs Staverman, Wessel Van Diepen and Jeroen Nieuwenhuize. Ten 1983 singles that didn’t reach my chart back then now have belated opportunities to do so. Five of them charted in the UK – and most of them in many other countries too – for the Flying Pickets, Irene Cara, Matthew Wilder, Rita Coolidge and Status Quo. The last-named act could double their tally of hits in my top forty in the months ahead with "Marguerita Time", as they previously reached number eight with “Burning Bridges” – while “Only You”, “Flashdance (What A Feeling)”, “Break My Stride” and “All Time High” would, if they advance into the chart, be the debut hits for all of the others. And equally devoid of past successes here are Belgium’s Nathalie and New Zealand’s Tim Finn, new in the breakers with “My Love Won’t Let You Down” and “Fraction Too Much Friction” – as are three Dutch acts. “Don’t Feed The Animals”, “Een Beetje Van Dit” and “Starting At The End” could belatedly become hits on my chart for Fay Lovsky, Vulcano and Doris D and the Pins. Meanwhile, as none of these arrive inside the top 100, and there is once again not a single worthy and eligible more recent release that has impressed me since this time last month, the new Chartbuster is the biggest climber into the 41-100 range from below it. Making exactly the same move that Lost Frequencies and Zonderling did in June – a rise of twelve places from 102 to 90 – it is a 22-year-old French singer that is now guaranteed a place in August’s top forty. My Record of the Month for July 2018 is Angèle Van Laeken, and “Je Veux Tes Yeux”.

You've reminded me to look for one of those CDs with Charli's Boys on it - Pop Party 2017 seems the cheapest option.
It seems her next proper album is a long time away and may not even feature Boys so...

I did look for last year's ESC album in HMV but they no longer have it. Maybe City Lights (my #1 of 17 also) is gonna be on Blanche's album soon after the current single? I'll hold out a bit longer!

"Boys" does seem to be on a few compilation CDs - although, disappointingly, not on any vinyl release as yet, even though two of her previous albums were available in that format !

I would hope, and expect, so - I think I recall reading an interview with her in which she said the album was planned for this year, before she returns to her studies?

Having already been decades behind in discovering that there was an English version of "Ohne Dich", I found out only this month that the Flying Pickets also released a German version of "Only You" - "Nur Dein Clown". I don't know whether sales of this single would have been combined with the original - which seems to have been their only hit in Germany, spending twenty weeks in the chart and peaking for one week at number one (at the end of February 1984, a couple of months after it went to number one in the UK).

Now, this month's first retro chart - and music was so much better, and so much more easy to obtain in a physical format, when I was almost exactly half my present age. I was beginning my second year as a first-year manager (!) - little suspecting that I was less than a year and a half away from semi-retirement. And it was one of the very rare months in which the same act - one of my all time favourites - held numbers one and two in my chart, with the two sides of their latest single . . . . .

Did Bette Midler's remake of 'From a Distance' enter your chart as well?

That was on its way to a peak of number eight in my chart - it fared best in their homeland, Austria, where it reached number two. I would have discovered it in the Dutch chart shows - it was a top ten hit in the Netherlands. But, like so many impressive singles from continental Europe back then, it failed to catch on in the UK. One week in the top 100, at number 93 !

It did - but it wasn't as successful or as long lasting as Nanci Griffith's original. The only Bette Midler single I ever bought, it peaked at number five and stayed in my chart for seven months.

Another version of this song reached my top forty briefly as well - Elaine Paige peaked at number 38, appearing for just three months.

Now, it's half way through the month - and, having caught up with the most recent annual charts not previously posted since the beginning of the year, from now on I'm going to update one of the earlier years at this time. Several tracks originally released some further time ago have only charted in the past few years. occasionally quite some time after their original year of recording - and when I posted the annual charts in the more distant past, I often limited them only to a top 100 (yeah, right - as if I'm ever going to find anything close to a hundred tracks I like from 2018 or any year yet to come ! ) or indeed just to the top forty hits plus top forty breakers appearances. So these will be lengthier, more full retrospectives of bygone years - starting this time with the only year to date in which all efforts to obtain my favourite single of the year on vinyl have failed . . . . .
