Thanks, Benny ! :D

35 19 06 (I'LL NEVER BE) MARIA MAGDALENA Sandra ##
36 ---- 01 IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT Sandra
It was bizarre, and disappointing, that Sandra never had any great success in the UK. These and other of her singles were released here (some of them more than once!) but she could never make it into the top forty, in contrast with her excellent performance in the German-speaking countries and other parts of Europe . . . . .

Now, back to the present (or as much of it as can be featured in my current chart nowadays!) :

Just two of the hits in my previous chart remain in the same places in this new one – the longest laster from Space, “Magic Fly”, stays at number 24 in its sixteenth month, and after finally racing up to number one, Imany holds on to pole position with “Don’t Be So Shy”. However, a few strong challengers to take over next time arrive in the top five – led by the instrumental that was last month’s Chartbuster. “Grey” by Kölsch is the highest of four brand new entries, crashing straight in at number two – while two of last month’s very belated new arrivals make impressive climbs at numbers four and five. From 1974, “Autobahn” by Kraftwerk motors up six places, while Brotherhood Of Man are in the mood to be this month’s Rapid Riser, making a move of twelve places with “Oh Boy” from 1977. Just four other tracks are moving up – Alan Walker with “Alone” from 14 to 11, Justin Timberlake with “Can’t Stop The Feeling” from 23 to 15, Dua Lipa with “Be The One” from 36 to 25, and another of the very old singles that took a long time to get into gear – “The Pushbike Song” from the Mixtures, up ten places at number 30. Six places lower is a new entry for a track which may or may not have been a single in the early 1980s – and which I originally saw on at least one imported Italian music programme that aired in the very earliest months of Channel Four. The correct spelling of its title is “Ratatataplan” – but that’s not what appears on most of the albums featuring it, which made it more difficult to track one down! It becomes the eighth top forty hit for the 73-year-old actress, presenter and singer Raffaella Carra – the most well-known of which, and her only major UK success, stands at number three in my all-time list. In contrast, neither Rihanna nor Train are even in the top 1000 with their best efforts to date – but they also have new hits this month. The 29-year-old from Barbados is in at number 20 with “Love On The Brain”, while the American roots rock band from San Francisco snatch the number 40 spot with “Play That Song”. All of this leaves twenty-eight hits moving down – and the fastest faller is a former Chartbuster and a former number one – Alan Walker dives sixteen places to number 37 with “Faded”.

As the 2017 Eurovision Song Contest comes closer – unless, of course, it has to be cancelled due to certain difficulties relating to the Ukrainian venue and the entrant put forward from neighbouring Russia – it’s unfortunate that neither of the two very promising entries I have noticed in recent weeks are yet eligible for inclusion in the top forty breakers. Hopefully physical releases will follow in the not too distant future. However, another Eurovision decade is celebrated this month with five previously neglected gems from the 1970’s – the first decade during which I was able to watch the contest! The Spanish song from 1973 by Mocedades, the Irish one from 1974 by Tina Reynolds, the Dutch winner of 1975 by Teach-In, the French submission from 1976 by Catherine Ferry, and the Swedish representative for 1978 by Springtime could all become hits in my chart next month – but of course “Eres Tu”, “Cross Your Heart”, “Ding-A-Dong”, “Un Deux Trois” and “Mrs Caroline Robinson” are competing against all the 1980s Eurovision songs that arrived in the breakers last time, and against all the other (mostly) more recent releases there. Delays to physical availability seem to be occurring more and more nowadays – as well as the two 2017 Eurovision entries already mentioned, a couple of other promising new tracks also have to be held back for the very same reason. But there are two recent songs that are able to be included – “Trying To Pretend” by Noemie Wolfs and “Cocoon” from Milky Chance. Unfortunately, neither of these are inside the top 100 – they are in at 104 and 108 respectively in the extended chart – so a top forty entry next time can’t be guaranteed. Instead, this month’s Chartbuster is the track making the biggest climb into the top 100 from below it. Moving up from 110 to 55 are two Brazilian DJs whose track with vocals by an American singer is still performing well in various European charts. My Record of the Month is Alok and Bruno Martini featuring Zeeba, and Hear Me Now.

Now, this month's first retro chart. I was eighteen years old, and my first-year exams at university were not far off. I had recently discovered, and started listening to, the Dutch chart shows on Hilversum-3 radio, and I found quite a few songs I liked from the Eurovision Song Contest. Not only from that year - 1983 - but I had also bought a double-LP containing all the previous winners, and one from more than a decade earlier rose to the top of my monthly chart !

Thanks again, Benny ! :D

35 25 05 CA PLANE POUR MOI Plastic Bertrand
I'm sure it wasn't just me that noticed in 1987 when he sung for Luxembourg in the Eurovision Song Contest, his voice didn't sound remotely similar to the one on this single. Eventually - apparently only in 2010 - he admitted that he hadn't actually sung "Ca Plane Pour Moi" or anything else on his first four albums !

Now, two-thirds of the way through April already - it's time for another retro chart . . . . .

This time, it's back to when I was twenty-five years old, and working hard towards the last promotion I would ever receive at work ! But I was still keeping in touch with several European charts and the Europarade, and obtaining from contacts in continental Europe the best of the hit singles at the time plus many of those that had previously eluded me. The top three in the previous month were all new entries - but, twenty-six years ago, one of them would replace another at number one . . . . .

Thanks again, Benny ! :D

Actually, Del Amitri were one-hit wonders as far as I was concerned - I do vaguely recall the other two singles that you mentioned, but neither of them reached my record / cd collection or chart . . . . .

Now . . . . . it's rare indeed that there are more climbers in my latest chart than there were in the most recent UKmixParade ! And there are nine brand new breakers that are recent releases - most of which only became eligible for inclusion with physical releases this month, even though I was aware of them a month or two earlier :

It was the Chartbuster in March, it was the highest new entry at number two in April – and now “Grey” by Kölsch climbs one place to become my 225th number one. It’s the first instrumental chart-topper since – and isn’t entirely dissimilar to - “Walking With Elephants” by Ten Walls at the end of 2014 and beginning of 2015. Rune Reilly Kölsch was born in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1977 – and becomes the first Dane to reach number one in my chart for more than five years. Quite a few other Scandinavians have been there since Agnes Obel took pole position in February 2012 with “Just So” – but the Brazilian duo Alok and Bruno Martini are possibly the strongest challengers next month. Accompanied by American singer Zeeba, they have the highest of three brand new entries, crashing in at number six with “Hear Me Now”. And Rihanna’s chances could also be good – the 29-year-old from Barbados is this month’s Rapid Riser with “Love On The Brain”, racing up fifteen places to number five. That’s her highest position ever in my top forty – her previous peak was number 13, together with David Guetta on “Who’s That Chick”. Among a total of nine climbers this time, there are also major moves for Dua Lipa and for two of the much older releases that have recently entered my chart for the Mixtures and Raffaella Carra – and a Eurovision Song Contest entry from 1980 now makes a very belated debut at number 31. Twin sisters Sophie and Magaly represented Luxembourg with their fun song “Papa Pingouin” – although sadly it was depression and death that followed for them. Those seem too to be the themes of the video promoting the other new entry this time – “Don’t Worry About Me” by Frances, a 23-year-old singer/songwriter from Oxford. This was a much bigger hit in Belgium than anywhere else, and now arrives in my chart at number 40. Meanwhile, twenty-eight hits move down – including fastest faller “Everything It Takes” by Loretta Lynn featuring Elvis Costello, diving nine places to 32, and longest laster “Magic Fly” from Space, sliding three places to 27 in its seventeenth appearance.

This month’s selection of neglected retro releases concentrates on the earliest years of the Eurovision Song Contest during my lifetime. It presents belated opportunities of chart success for the first offering by Vicky Leandros – “Love Is Blue” from 1967 – and the winners of the contests of 1965, 1967, 1970 and 1971 from France Gall, Sandie Shaw, Dana and Severine. “Poupee De Cire, Poupee De Son”, “Puppet On A String”, “All Kinds Of Everything” and “Un Banc, Un Arbre, une Rue” join ten other old entries already in the breakers – as do three of the most promising submissions for the upcoming 2017 contest. Romania are represented by Ilinca and Alex Florea with “Yodel It”, and Finland by Norma John (confusingly, a duo) with “Blackbird” – but the stand-out entry for me this year is Belgium’s “City Lights” by 17-year-old Blanche. The UK’s entry seems destined for a very low position on the final scoreboard – perhaps we should instead have sent something more like the impressive new single by Steps ! Back after a long absence, the pop quintet have the dubious distinction of the greatest number of breakers without achieving any hits at all – ten of them between 1997 and 2001 – but may finally enter my top forty for the first time with “Scared Of The Dark”. Five other new possible future hits this month include "Tongue Tied" by Earl, “Oops” by Little Mix featuring Charlie Puth, “Little Moon Rises” by Stan Van Samang featuring Sarah Bettens and “A Dream That Never Stops” by Ozark Henry – but not featuring Amaryllis Uitterlinden, with whom he reached number one in my chart in the summer of 2013. However, this month’s Chartbuster is about to become the sixth top forty hit for the group whose mission to combine classical music with more contemporary pop, dance and electronic styles has succeeded far beyond their wildest dreams in the last few years. With a guest vocalist from Sweden, and currently their third number one in the UK, my Record of the Month for May 2017 is Clean Bandit featuring Zara Larsson, and "Symphony”.

Really? I thought it had a great response in general. It's a strong song IMO and our best in years - we already had the likes of Scooch. We don't need any more blindingly obvious ABBA soundalikes. That kind of kitschness is the reason we're not taken seriously. But - Blanche - City Lights is definitely the way to go. Proper serious committed adult pop. We shouldn't be entering Steps, we should be entering Ellie Goulding or someone of that ilk. I like Steps, BTW but they had much better songs in the past (Happy on the new album is quite dark and hard-edged though).

EDIT: Oh, you're right. Even Belgium have fallen from 2nd fave to seventh (i think her first rehearsal has put some off it). :-?

^Blanche is a bit too bland. yeah, it is modern, but it can be a good album track, not a single.

Number one in France - certainly a good result there, although I gather that fewer sales / downloads / streams are required there nowadays to achieve high chart positions than in other countries with populations of similar sizes. It peaked at number two in my chart.

I recall seeing "Blackbird" by Norma John high in your personal chart - no doubt you'll be disappointed, as am I, that this didn't progress to the Eurovision final for Finland this week. Perhaps it came close to qualifying - there seemed to me to be several much worse entries that still made it through . . . . .

I think that, in the current political climate, we'd really be unlikely to do well no matter what we sent - I suspect that, just like last year, we'll plummet down the scoreboard when the second round of votes are added. From what I've seen, though, Lucie seems to be a confident performer . . . . .

Blondini wrote:But - Blanche - City Lights is definitely the way to go. Proper serious committed adult pop.
. . . . . while Blanche gave the impression of being much less confident on Tuesday night. I have the faintest hope that, realising that she had by far one of the strongest songs in the contest, she had been aiming to lull some of the others into a false sense of security with weaker performances up until now, and will up her game when it will really matter, on Saturday ! However, perhaps the "frightened deer caught in the headlights of a rapidly approaching articulated lorry" look worked in her favour to some extent, even if it was most likely due to her being nervous about performing to such a large audience at her young age. Either way, I hope she felt encouraged by the reception of her song in the arena - it seemed tremendous compared to most of the others - and I'm sure you're as delighted as I am that she qualified for the final. I'm optimistic that she could still get a very good result. :D

Now, it's time for the first retro chart for this month - and, thirty years ago, four of the six new entries were from the 1987 Eurovision Song Contest. And one of the other two was by a singer who had represented her country there twenty-two years earlier . . . . .

Thanks again, Benny - while I still often hear the other three that you highlighted played on various radio stations nowadays, I certainly can't say the same for "Calling America". While it's one of my favourites from that group, radio programmers seem to only pick their most well known hits, such as "Mr Blue Sky", instead.

Now, it's time for May's second retro chart. And the clock is turned much further back - to a month in which I was just sixteen years old, and sitting my first "A" level (Maths) and tenth "O" level (Computer Studies) at school. The only charts I had discovered by this point were those of the UK and Ireland - so, apart from a couple of television themes, everything in my chart thirty-six years ago was a hit from one or both of these countries !

Thanks, Benny - it certainly seems to be one of the most remembered. And the UK has only had one more winner since then - it may be quite some time before we have another !

Now, back to the present - although a few old Eurovision entries are faring better than even the most impressive submissions from the 2017 contest so far . . . . .

The sixth new chart of 2017 has another new number one – the 226th to date – as April’s Chartbuster and May’s highest new entry rises five places for Alok and Bruno Martini featuring Zeeba. “Hear Me Now” is one of nine climbers this time - replacing “Grey” by Kölsch, which slides two places to number three. In between them is a strong contender for next month’s number one – Rihanna advances three more places to number two with “Love On The Brain”. Among the other upwardly mobile tracks, two are the joint Rapid Risers, racing up thirteen places each. From 36 to 23, Train could be on track for their biggest success to date with “Play That Song”- and from 23 to 10, Raffaella Carra gets a fifth top ten hit with “Ratatataplan”, several decades after the first ! One place higher, the much younger singer Dua Lipa moves into the top ten for the first time in her fifth month with “Be The One”. Meanwhile, there are five new entries – and the sixth hit for Clean Bandit is the first featuring Zara Larsson. “Symphony”, last month’s Chartbuster and a recent number one in the UK, arrives at number 17. Ozark Henry’s third success is “A Dream That Never Stops”, new at 24 – and there are chart debuts for three other acts. Born in Kenya in 1936, Roger Whittaker is almost the oldest performer in my chart with “The Last Farewell”. Originally recorded in 1971, this was not a major worldwide hit until four years later – but it has taken considerably longer to reach my top forty, entering now at number 22. Seventeen-year-old Blanche finished in an impressive fourth place for Belgium in this year’s Eurovision Song Contest, and she is new at 35 in my chart with “City Lights” – while, after failing to chart in the late 1990s or early 2000s with any of their ten singles that reached the breakers, Steps have their very first top forty hit in my chart with “Scared Of The Dark”. That’s new at 29 – twenty-four places better than their previous best placing with “Better Best Forgotten”. And twenty-six tracks are moving down this month, including the longest laster and fastest faller. “Magic Fly” by Space slides nine places to 36 in its eighteenth appearance, while “Sing Me To Sleep” by Alan Walker dives eleven places from 28 to 39.

Originally born in Switzerland, but spending most of his life in Italy, the composer, producer, musician and DJ Robert Miles died this month of cancer at the age of 47. Four of his most well-known singles reached my top forty when originally released – indeed, only one of the four spent more than a single month in the breakers before rising into the top forty – and they all now return to the breakers. Those are “Freedom” featuring Kathy Sledge, “One And One” featuring Maria Nayler, “Fable”, and his greatest success “Children” – which reached number one in several countries in 1995. Meanwhile, it’s a much earlier year than this – 1976 - from which some previously neglected potential hits arrive in the breakers this time. Pussycat previously charted with “Mississippi” and “Lovers Of A Kind” – and “Georgie” could be about to give them a belated third hit. Jean-Michel Jarre may also soon have a third success with “Oxygene IV” – while chart-toppers by three other artists appear in the breakers for the first time. “A Fifth Of Beethoven” reached number one in both America and Canada for Walter Murphy; “S-s-s-single Bed” went to number one in Australia, and peaked in the top five in the UK, for Fox; and “Rock And Roll Star” was a Belgian number one, and very nearly matched that success in their Dutch homeland for one of several groups who have used the name “Champagne”. To avoid confusion – but also, as it turned out, avoiding success – they were credited as “Dutch Champagne” in France and as “Bubbley” in the UK. None of these arrive inside the top 100, however – and nor do any more recent releases ! So the biggest climber into the top 100 from below it becomes the new Chartbuster – and it’s a song that made it to number 116 in May after I heard it played just once on the radio (and, of course, verified that a physical release was available). Now it climbs sixty places to number 56, and is guaranteed to enter my top forty in July. I suspect that it would not just have been me that thought it might be a new release by someone who had already had thirteen hits in my top forty, and the longest lasting number one album of all time in her Dutch homeland – Caro Emerald. But it’s not – instead, it is the work of a 35-year-old singer-songwriter from Chugiak, Anchorage in Alaska. She has been releasing albums for more than a decade, and has been a support act for Rick Astley on his latest tour – so perhaps her upcoming album, the first on which she is billed only by her surname, excluding her first name (Kate), will become her most successful. Its title track is my Record of the Month for June 2017 – Earl, and “Tongue Tied”.

Retro chart time again - and, twenty-six years ago, the theme tune from a Dutch soap-opera (initially based on an Australian one, and also remade in Germany), several seasons of which I have watched much more recently on DVD, spent its only month at the top of my monthly chart. One of this month's new entries was about to race up and replace it . . . . .

Thanks, Benny - NKOTB had many other sales successes, but "Tonight" was the only one that I ever liked ! It seems to be pretty much the only choice for radio programmers who still want to include their music two to three decades later . . . . .

Now, two thirds of the way through the month, a trip further back in time for another retro chart. My all-time number one was comfortably at the top for the second of six months - and there were several big climbers, and more new entries than there ever are nowadays ! Thirty-two years ago, at the age of twenty, I was sitting my third (final) year exams at University - and this was the music I was enjoying from the Europarade and various charts of Western Europe :

I like all these, especially Pat Benatar's 'We Belong' and Alphaville's 'Sounds Like A Melody'. The latter seems to be a bit forgotten nowadays in contrast to the band's 2 other big hits, 'Big In Japan' and 'Forever Young'.

Thanks, Benny - yes, I think that's probably right. It seems like a very long time since I've heard "Sounds Like A Melody" played on the radio, although it's my favourite of their three big hits. I'm not surprised that UK radio ignores it, however - as it was never released as a single here ! "Big In Japan" hit the UK top ten somewhat later than the rest of Europe, then was followed up with "Forever Young" at much the same time as it was released elsewhere. Which flopped dreadfully here, only just sneaking into the bottom end of the top 100 . . . . . Perhaps surprisingly, however, I have heard "Forever Young" more often on British radio than "Big In Japan" in recent years.

Meanwhile, famous last words . . . . .

Referring to the charts of 1985, I wrote:there were several big climbers, and more new entries than there ever are nowadays !
I hadn't begun to compile my new chart for this month until about a week later, and I then realised that that there would be eight new entries - more than the six back then, and in every other month for almost the last six years. The last time there were eight new entries was when "Titanium" came in at number one . . . . .

Five Eurovision Song Contest entries have previously reached number one in my top forty over nearly thirty-eight years – “Apres Toi” by Vicky Leandros from 1972, “Fur Alle” by Wind from 1985, “Viver Senza Tei” by Furbaz from 1989, “Don’t Ever Cry” by Put from 1993 and “Birds” by Anouk from 2013 – and now a sixth is there. Blanche from Belgium – Ellie Delvaux, whose eighteenth birthday was a few weeks ago, has my 227th chart-topper with “City Lights”. Finishing fourth in this year’s contest, it’s also this month’s Rapid Riser, racing up thirty-four places. Ten other climbers also include all of June’s other new entries – Ozark Henry is up seven to 17 with “A Dream That Never Stops”, Clean Bandit featuring Zara Larsson move from 17 to 12 with “Symphony” and Roger Whittaker is one place above them with “The Last Farewell”, ascending eleven places . . . . . while, after never going higher than number 53 with any of their previous releases, Steps rise all the way from 29 to number five with “Scared Of The Dark”. Meanwhile, there are more modest moves onward and upward for very old tracks by Raffaella Carra, the Mixtures and Sophie et Magaly, and for more recent releases by Train and Frances – and “You” goes up six places to number six to give Hooverphonic their seventh top ten hit. Their former lead singer Noemie Wolfs has one of three joint longest lasters this time, as “Burning” slides three places to 33 – along with “Fast Car” from Jonas Blue featuring Dakota and “Stressed Out” by Twenty One Pilots, that spends a twelfth month in the top forty – and she also has a brand new entry, the second highest, at number 22, with “Trying To Pretend”. There’s no pretending that this month sees the greatest number of new hits for almost six years – for the first time since October 2011, there are no fewer than eight chart debuts. Only one of the other seven involves an act that has previously charted – Charlie Puth, who now teams up with former winners of “The X Factor” Little Mix. “Oops” comes in at number 26. Nine places lower, Stan Van Samang and Sarah Bettens arrive with their duet “Little Moon Rises”, and a 1975 instrumental played on the accordion by the Gilde Duo, "Mühle Im Schwarzwald", sneaks in at number 38. But an even older single enters the chart at number 40 – “Puppet On A String”, which won the Eurovision Song Contest fifty years ago for Sandie Shaw. Two more songs from the most recent contest also arrive – Romania’s Ilanca and Alex Florea at 27 with “Yodel It!” and Finland’s Norma John at 30 with “Blackbird” – while the highest new entry is last month’s Chartbuster. Earl, sounding very like Caro Emerald, who she described in a recent interview as “a wonderful artist, fantastic performer and a good songwriter”, crashes in at number 20 with “Tongue Tied”. In contrast, among twenty-one hits dropping down this time, the fastest faller is the former number one from Lost Frequencies featuring Sandro Cavazza, “Beautiful Life”.

Indonesia-born singer and television presenter Sandra Reemer died this month of cancer at the age of sixty-six – her 1990 hit “La Colegiala” returns to the breakers. Four previously overlooked UK number ones from the end of that decade appear for the first time – Britney Spears with “...Baby One More Time”, Eiffel 65 with “Blue (Da Ba Dee)”, Madison Avenue’s “Don’t Call Me Baby” and Lou Bega’s “Mambo No. 5 (A Little Bit Of...)” – while nine much more recent releases become potential future hits. Only three of them involve acts that have ever charted in the past – including one who has recently achieved her biggest success in the UK charts following many tragic deaths due to an explosion at the end of one of her concerts. Ariana Grande, who reached number four with “Break Free”, her collaboration with Zedd, may return to the top forty with her new recording of “Beauty And The Beast”, on which she is accompanied by John Legend. Steps could rapidly follow up their long-awaited first hit with a second, “Story Of A Heart” - while a fourth success seems likely for Alle Farben. The first three all reached my top five – and “Little Hollywood” features vocals by Janieck Devy, who was at number one together with Lost Frequencies at the end of 2015 and the beginning of 2016 with “Reality”. Other collaborations that might soon be chartbound are “Bad Things” from Machine Gun Kelly and Camila Cabello, and “Tuesday” by Burak Yeter featuring Danelle Sandoval – and two further entries from this year’s Eurovision Song Contest could be about to join the other three already in the top forty. I have come to somewhat belatedly appreciate the winner from Salvador Sobral of Portugal, “Amar Pelos Dois” - and the . . . . . er, loser by Levina of Germany, “Perfect Life”. The 26-year-old from Bonn impressed me not only with her song, but with her delightfully positive attitude. “Of course I have to thank Ireland for giving us three points - and besides, we did not come in last place, but only in second to last,” she said in a post-contest interview. “If this can continue over the next few years, we will be number one again in twenty-five years!”. Harry Styles needed much less time to have a solo number one in the UK to add to those he had together with the group One Direction – “Sign Of The Times” might also enter my chart in the months ahead. But guaranteed a place there in August is this month’s Chartbuster from Paris-based duo Dorian Lo and César de Rummel, whose latest release has apparently reached number one in Mexico, Russia and the Czech Republic. It is now successful too in parts of Western Europe – including Austria, in which it has spent the last five weeks in the top ten. My Record of the Month for July 2017 is Ofenbach, and “Be Mine”.

I actually discovered "Story Of A Heart" purely by chance - as it was playing on Radio 2 in the local surgery as I waited for an appointment ! I didn't hear any indication of who it was performed by, but checked the playlist when I returned home. Already it seems possible that it will enter my chart this month higher than their current hit (and the only one that seems to have been a downloads / streaming success in the UK) - remarkable for the same group that originally reached the breakers with ten of their much earlier singles, none of them going on to reach my top forty . . . . .

Indeed, one of many television theme tunes that have entered my chart in nearly thirty-eight years !

I had never heard of her before this - but I gather she has made quite a few albums before the one that may or may not turn up by the end of this month . . . . .

It was fortunate that this became available on vinyl before the end of last month, or its upward movement would have been more restricted . . . . . It has only just left the top ten in her homeland this week, after nine weeks there (two of them at number one) and is still hanging around the lower end of the charts of a few other countries. The winner from Portugal seems to have disappeared more quickly, with no real sustained airplay - and the other two that finished ahead on the night have done virtually nothing in the charts !

Now, it's time to return to the distant past, when two of the Eurovision entries that were performed in Harrogate were in the top five of my chart. I was seventeen years old, I was coming right to the end of five years at high school, and it would be a few months until I would begin three years at university. Here's the music I was enjoying way back then . . . . .

Indeed it was ! I think this was a completely different line-up from their medleys of 1960s hits, which they are maybe more well-known for in the UK.

I hadn't spotted the resemblance ! This was one of the biggest of several successes for her in the Netherlands in the 1980s, after which she mostly disappeared to do other things. "Dynamite" went on to eventually reach number one in my chart - it's at 11 in my all-time list. Paris Hilton, of course, also made it to number one with "Stars Are Blind".

Now . . . . . a young Belgian lady with a song she recorded at the age of seventeen is currently at number one. Perhaps history repeats - as the single at the top of this month's second retro chart was also recorded at the age of seventeen by another young Belgian lady ! However, as can be seen from the video, Lio used to dress . . . . . er, less "modestly" than Blanche . . . . .
