Beautiful songs by the Bangles and Tanita Tikaram! :P
Indeed they were, Benny. Although "Eternal Flame" was probably the Bangles' biggest hit in most countries, it's actually the lowest-ranking of their four major successes in my all-time list. That's mainly because it only spent five months in my chart - it was at its peak in this month. Both "If She Knew What She Wants" and "Walk Like An Egyptian" peaked slightly lower, but stayed in the chart for eight months each - while "Manic Monday" got to number three, and is currently my number 675 of all time. Meanwhile, Tanita Tikaram has five hits higher than all of these overall - "Twist In My Sobriety" of course being the biggest, at 62 on the all time list.

Now, another month has passed - and while not much new music is impressing me, the fortunes of one group have turned around completely from a couple of decades ago . . . . .

Just one of the top forty occupies the same position as it did in July – and that’s “Puppet On A String” by Sandie Shaw, stuck at number forty after entering last month, fifty years after winning the Eurovision Song Contest. This means that the song that should have won this year’s contest is among seventeen hits moving down – “City Lights” from Blanche falls two places to number three, as one act overtakes her with two different songs. That act is none other than Steps - the British dance-pop group consisting of Lee Latchford-Evans, Claire Richards, Lisa Scott-Lee, Faye Tozer and Ian “H” Watkins. Almost two decades after having many hits in the UK – ten of which reached my top forty breakers, none of them ever managing to advance into my chart – they recently reformed, and the two most-promoted tracks from their album “Tears On The Dancefloor” are now in the top two spots. “Scared Of The Dark” is one of seventeen climbers, up three places from last month’s number five – and “Story Of A Heart” is the highest of four brand new entries, straight in at number one. It’s the 228th chart-topper in thirty-eight years, and the 23rd to enter in pole position this century – making Steps only the sixth act ever to be at numbers one and two simultaneously. The others were the Pet Shop Boys, Nicole, Tina Cousins, Ann Lee, and (in collaborations with two different acts) Regi. However, the first quintet to achieve this feat could face a strong challenge next month from Alaska singer/songwriter (Kate) Earl. The album whose title track is “Tongue Tied” has finally been released, just in time to enable June’s Chartbuster and July’s highest new entry to race up sixteen places to number four, this month’s Rapid Riser. The second highest climber is Noemie Wolfs, up from 22 to 12 with “Trying To Pretend” – and the former Hooverphonic vocalist also remains in the top forty for a thirteenth month with the longest laster, “Burning”, down six at 39. The fastest faller is Kraftwerk’s “Autobahn”, heading for the hard shoulder with an eleven-place dive to number 20. But three considerably more recent releases arrive in the top forty – Alle Farben and Janieck with “Little Hollywood” at 36, Burak Yeter featuring Danelle Sandoval at 28 with “Tuesday”, and last month’s Chartbuster from Ofenbach, “Be Mine”, at 14.

Andrea Jürgens had her first German hit at the age of ten in 1977; sadly, she died this month following double kidney failure aged 50. Five of her German cover versions of well-known hits by other artists return to the breakers – including her former Chartbuster and biggest success in my chart, “Du Wirst Seh’n” (Madonna’s “You’ll See”), and her other former top forty success “Japanese Boy” (originally by Aneka). Her version of Tol and Tol’s “Eleni”, which belatedly reached the breakers last year, could be chartbound again, as might her translations of the Audrey Landers hits “Manuel Goodbye” and “Playa Blanca”. This month’s search for neglected gems focuses on the earlier years of the present decade, as “Baby Come Home”, “Happiness” and “Je Cours” may soon be added to several hits already by the Scissor Sisters, Stromae and Hooverphonic – and there are two new arrivals in the breakers for more recent offerings. Those are “On My Mind” by London-based trio Disciples (Nathan Vincent Duvall, Gavin Koolmon and Luke McDermott) and “All Or Nothing” from Lost Frequencies featuring Axel Ehnström. However, they are at numbers 104 and 105 respectively in the extended chart – not near enough to the top forty to be guaranteed a place there in September. So the new Chartbuster is the biggest climber into the top 100 – and, as I never liked any of the vastly successful tracks by the pop boy-band, currently apparently on a “hiatus”, of which he was a member, it is perhaps surprising that his first solo single, which briefly topped the UK chart, has managed to impress me so much. Moving from 112 to 67 on its way into my top forty, my Record of the Month for August 2017 is Harry Styles, and “Sign Of The Times”.

Great top 2 by Steps, 'Story Of A Heart' is very ABBA-esque (as it was written by Björn and Benny) and 'Scared Of The Dark' is an amazing pop dance song.
The breaker's chart includes some great 90s classics, and I also love your two retro #1s from 7 and 27 years ago.

Thanks, Benny, You probably already knew, but I have only just discovered, that "Story Of A Heart" originally appeared on an album credited to "Benny Andersson Band" in 2009.

I have just realised something strange - this is currently the only hit in my top forty that isn't available on vinyl ! And hopefully it eventually will be, when Clean Bandit release their next album . . . . . It has been said for some time that this format is experiencing a revival - but it hasn't impacted on my chart so much until now.

Now, a third of the way through August, it's time to revisit a period when I doubt I was even aware of the existence of CDs - singles were vinyl-only, although it's possible that shops in bigger cities than where I lived were beginning to stock a few CD albums. I was twenty-two years old and coming to the end of my first year at work, advancing from "second assistant" to "first assistant" - and this was the music I was enjoying thirty-one years ago . . . . .

Thanks again, Benny . . . . . Madonna had a total of thirty-seven breakers, twenty-eight of which went on to enter my chart - but "Live To Tell" was only her 26th most successful track !

Another third of the month has passed - and it's time for another retro chart. This time, a dig deep into the archives, going right back to the beginning of the second year in which I compiled my monthly chart. It was still only a top thirty, and dominated by hits from the UK and Ireland - as those were the only weekly charts I was listening to way back then, at the age of fifteen. In this one, one of six singles that had appeared ever since the start finally reached the top. Not many others would ever take more than a year to get there ! Here's the music I was enjoying thirty-seven years ago . . . . .

Thanks again, Benny - I think all of those were successes in various parts of Europe, while many of the others probably didn't make much or any impact on the charts apart from in Ireland and/or the UK . . . . .

Now, it's back to the present - although there are some 1970s and early 1980s singles that are still doing quite well in my current chart ! And there's another brand new number one - but probably not one that is particularly well-known on UKmix. It's from an album that I see made it to number 81 in the UK's albums chart. So it wasn't just me that bought it - dozens of others did too . . . . .

Two Eurovision Song Contest entries, fifty years apart, are the only non-movers in my top forty this month – Sandie Shaw clings on to the number 40 position with “Puppet On A String” for a third month, while the former number one “City Lights” remains at number three for Blanche. That means that there is another new number one, for the fifth consecutive month – and the battle was between two former Chartbusters. July’s Record of the Month, “Be Mine” from Ofenbach, races up twelve places to the runner-up spot – but June’s ascends three places into pole position for Earl. “Tongue Tied” becomes my 229th number one, and the first for the 35-year-old singer/songwriter from Alaska. Eight other climbers include major moves for two of last month’s new entries – "Tuesday" races up nineteen places to number nine for Burak Yeter featuring Danelle Sandoval, while the Rapid Riser is “Little Hollywood”. The fourth hit for Alle Farben, and the second featuring Janieck Devy on vocals, could be on its way to the top five – like all of their previous successes – as it soars up from 36 to 14. Meanwhile, none of this month’s three new entries involve artists who have ever charted before. Nathan Vincent Duvall, Gavin Koolmon and Luke McDermott form the Disciples - who arrive at 36 with “On My Mind”.....Machine Gun Kelly featuring Camila Cabello are in at 30 with “Bad Things”.....and the highest debut is at 25 for last month’s Chartbuster from the former One Direction member Harry Styles, “Sign Of The Times”. All of this leaves twenty-five hits moving down – the fastest faller dives eight places to 31 for Julien Dore’s former number one “Le Lac”, and the longest laster is another French act. Kungs, featuring Cookin On 3 Burners, slide five places to number 39 after thirteen months in the top forty with "This Girl".

This month’s search for overlooked potential hits from some time ago focuses on the year 1989 – and finds Tina Turner with “The Best”, Zouk Machine with “Maldon”, Gladys Knight’s Bond movie theme “Licence To Kill”, Jessica’s “C’est la Vie Mon Cheri” and Johnny McEvoy singing about “Michael”. All of these enter the top forty breakers for the first time, and could progress into the chart in the months ahead. So might five rather more recent releases – although two of them, both from former chart-toppers, have taken some time to impress me since the releases of their latest albums on the very same day almost a year ago ! “It’s Happening Again” could be an aptly-named song from Agnes Obel, who reached number one in my chart with “Just So” and also peaked at number three with “Riverside” – while “Million Reasons” is one of the tracks promoted from Lady GaGa’s most recent release “Joanne”. Three of her eleven hits to date have made it to pole position – “Poker Face”, “The Edge Of Glory” and “Alejandro (Don’t Call My Name)”. Meanwhile, Charli XCX, the 25-year-old singer/songwriter from Cambridge, accompanied Icona Pop on their number one “I Love It”, and followed that up with the top five success “Boom Clap” – her latest offering “Boys” seems to be performing better on sales than on streams, but may be about to give her a third hit in my top forty. And, having replaced the dollar sign in her name with a traditional letter S since her three former breakers, 30-year-old Kesha could be about to enter my chart for the first time with “Praying”. But guaranteed a place there in October are two-thirds of the Swedish group that went to number one in 2012 and 2013 with the instrumental “Greyhound”. Steve Angello has since departed from the Swedish House Mafia, leaving a duo who previously had the Chartbuster in October 2015 with “Sun Is Shining”. This peaked at number 11 in my top forty – but their most recent single could improve on that as their second Chartbuster, having already reached number one in Germany and Austria. Moving up the charts in several other countries too, my Record of the Month for September 2017 is Axwell /\ Ingrosso, and “More Than You Know”.

Thanks again, Benny - I've heard the second Steps single played on the radio a few times, but unfortunately that doesn't ever seem to have translated into significant sales, or even streams . . . . .

Now . . . . . we're about a third of the way through the month, and it's time for the first September retro chart. I was twenty-six, I was somewhat reluctantly working in London, and I was obtaining quite a few older singles that had previously eluded me - so there are plenty of those appearing this month. Unusually, more than a third of the hits are sung in languages other than English ! For the second time this year, it's back to 1990 . . . . .

Thanks, Benny - it's one of mine too ! Both this and the two Vaya Con Dios hits are in, or near, my top 100 of all time.

And so are several of the singles that appeared in my second retro chart for this month. Thirty-three years ago, I was twenty, about to begin my final year at university, and already enjoying music from all over Europe - but especially from the Dutch and Irish charts ! A lot of my favourites from September 1984 were charting in these countries (and others!) - and here they all are . . . . .

'Guardian Angel/ Jenseits von Eden' is great, there's also an Italian verison called 'La valle dell'Eden' which is my favourite one out of the three.
Surprised to see ABBA's 'Cassandra', which was the b-side to 'The Day Before You Came'. There was a Dutch cover version of that song, is that the reason for its appearance on your chart?

All three versions were combined in my chart, although in my original files there wasn't space to add the third title, and I forgot to add it into the posting. When I first heard the Italian version (possibly before the others) I wondered if the singer was Italian, as he certainly had an Italian-sounding name - however, Wikipedia describes him as "a German singer of Italian descent".

I suspect that it was - I would certainly have been aware first of Bonnie and Jose's version when it was a hit in the Netherlands.

Another month over already - and I'm posting my new chart a little early, as this month ends on a Saturday and so I'll be busy producing and posting the UKmixParade at midnight. My new top five - changed very, very little from last month's ! - is one of quite a few in the forum that consists entirely of tracks that nobody else is currently charting. Three of them, however, have previously been in several other forum members' charts . . . . .

Five hits remain in the very same positions in my October 2017 top forty that they occupied in September – including the top four, as former number ones by Steps and Blanche stay just behind former Chartbusters from Ofenbach and (Kate) Earl, who spends a second month at the top with “Tongue Tied”. Somewhat further down, last month’s Chartbuster by Axwell ^ Ingrosso is the higher of only two brand new entries – “More Than You Know” comes in at number 25, while Walter Murphy arrives eleven places lower with his classically-themed disco single from 1976, “A Fifth Of Beethoven”. It’s one of nine tracks originally released more than three decades ago that appear in my current chart – the only one in the top ten being the Mixtures with “The Pushbike Song”. That’s one of twenty-four hits moving down this time – the others including the fastest faller from Clean Bandit featuring Zara Larsson and the longest laster by Marco Z. “Symphony” slides six places to number 21, while “Fill My Life Up” drops from 26 to 30. And nine climbers this month include three seven-place advances - for the Disciples, Harry Styles and Alle Farben featuring Janieck. “On My Mind” is at 29, the former Chartbuster “Sign Of The Times” is now at 18, while “Little Hollywood” is into the top ten at number seven. However, this month’s Rapid Riser is also there for Machine Gun Kelly and Camila Cabello. Racing up twenty places to number ten, could “Bad Things” be a future number one?

1984 is this month’s year from which some previously overlooked potential hits are taken – and they include a very belated thirty-eighth new breaker for Madonna, “Material Girl”. This brings her up to the same total as former Eurovision winner Nicole – and only BZN have ever had more potential hits, forty-two in all. There’s also a ninth breaker for Raffaella Carra – and all of the other eight have gone on to enter the top forty, so perhaps “Fatalita” will too. The Cats have had two successes – “La Diligence” and “Stay In My Life” – now “Love Is A Golden Ring” could be their third. Alice Visconti reached number seven in my chart with “I Treni De Tozeur”, her 1984 Eurovision collaboration with Franco Battiato – but in the same year she also sung with Stefan Waggershausen on another big German-language hit, “Zu Nah Am Feuer”. Losing just a little in translation to an English version as “Close To The Fire”, that may be on the way to the top forty – and so could Lady Lily with a television theme tune, “Patrik Pacard”.

And there are five much more recent releases that have impressed me this month – all bar one involving an act that has previously charted. Making their first appearance are a Canadian indie/rock band who have been releasing singles and albums for most of this century – Arcade Fire. “Everything Now” – possibly better without their voices on it – could be their first hit in my chart in the months ahead. Meanwhile, Camila Cabello could double her presence in the top forty next time with “Havana”, which is currently doing very well in some countries and features the elegantly-named Young Thug. And no fewer than three acts achieve their fifteenth breakers this month. Two of the world’s most successful DJs and producers, Avicii and Armin Van Buuren, feature Sandro Cavazza and Josh Cumbee respectively on their latest releases - “Without You”, and Sunny Days”. But guaranteed their twelfth hit with this month’s Chartbuster are a group who originally formed almost forty years ago, and first entered my chart more than thirty-five years ago with what remains their biggest success to date, peaking at number two. Going one better in several countries of continental Europe, that was called . . . . . “Maid Of Orleans (The Waltz Joan Of Arc)”. My Record of the Month for October 2017 is Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark (OMD), with “One More Time”.

Thanks again, Benny - Steps are certainly impressing me more in 2017 than they did originally, although the music buyers, downloaders and streamers of the UK don't seem to agree . . . . .

Blondini wrote:Didn't know that OMD song qualified as a single. Unless it's their next one?
I hadn't heard of any other recent singles from them, but this certainly seems to be the single they're promoting in Belgium. I've heard it a few times in recent weeks on the only non-chart radio show I listen to these days - De Volgelingen with Caren Meynen, four evenings a week on Belgium's Radio 2. That's the equivalent of the UK's Radio 2. And the link I posted is actually to a live performance they did on another radio show on the same station. It's not in the charts there, however. . . . .

. . . . . I just realised, it is currently at 31, up from 50, in the Ultratip Bubbling Under - as the breakers chart for potential hits not yet in the official Ultratop 50 was rebranded a year or two ago (and initially went through a strange period when tips went down as well as up!) :

http://www.ultratop.be/nl/ultratip/2017/20170930

I believe that still only includes official singles - I can't see anything there that isn't a single, although the blurb at the top doesn't specify either way. It translates as:

The Ultratip Bubbling Under shows the best-selling, most downloaded, most streamed and most played songs that are not yet in the Ultratop 50. It's potential hits-in-waiting.

Time already for the second retro chart, from a month in which I was a 24-year-old audit senior, and listening to the charts of the UK, Ireland, the Netherlands and the Europarade ! Partly due to some of the better Stock/Aitken/Waterman productions that were selling especially well at this time, it was a month with an amazing fourteen new entries . . . . .

I like all these! Interesting to see the original version of 'From a Distance', did the much more popular remake by Bette Midler ever enter your chart?

Thanks again, Benny. :D

I became aware of the original version of "From A Distance" when it spent seventeen weeks in the Irish top thirty, peaking at number nine - and probably suspected entirely wrongly at this time that Nanci Griffith was from Ireland, as it was common for Irish releases to hang around for a long time there, but unusual for others to do so without the slightest impact on the UK chart ! The single was definitely released in the UK, however. It spent twelve months in my chart, peaking at number three and is currently at 152 in the all time list.

Yes, Bette Midler's version of the same song did reach my chart too. Not as successful - highest position number five, seven months in, and overall number 881.

Ohh wow, it's throwback Thursday. :D

I'm unlikely to know a lot of these 1988 songs but from the one i recognise i like these:

06 13 03 THE LOCOMOTION Kylie Minogue
13 23 03 I DON'T WANT TO TALK ABOUT IT Everything But The Girl
18 24 03 THE ONLY WAY IS UP Yazz and the Plastic Population
21 21 04 PERFECT Fairground Attraction
23 10 06 GOT TO BE CERTAIN Kylie Minogue ##
30 ---- 01 TURN IT INTO LOVE Kylie Minogue
38 ---- 01 ONE MOMENT IN TIME Whitney Houston
48 ---- 01 JE NE SAIS PAS POURQUOI Kylie Minogue

Loving all the Kylie songs, its funny to think the first time i heard most of them was after Spinning around premiered, and i think it was VH-1 that did one of those hour long "Kylie - the hits" shows so this was around the time i got more into Kylie and her music.

36 36 04 NOTHING'S GONNA CHANGE MY LOVE FOR YOU Glenn Medeiros

LOL this was #1 on the day i was born. Tragic! Aww, its not that bad i suppose but its nowhere near as good as Perfect, The only way is up and One moment in time which are amazing songs.

All of those four were number ones in the UK - but they didn't perform especially well in my chart. New this month, "One Moment In Time" only went as high as number 26, while the other three were already at their peak positions - 18 for Yazz, 21 for Fairground Attraction and 36 for Glenn Medeiros.

I'm very much a buyer of singles rather than albums - but Kylie's first album certainly contained a lot of good singles ! "I Should Be So Lucky" was there as well as these ones. ( "Turn It Into Love" wasn't a single in the UK for Kylie - Hazell Dean charted with it instead - but it was in Japan, maybe other countries too.) "Got To Be Certain" was the most successful in my chart, peaking at number four.

Three hits occupy exactly the same places in my November 2017 top forty as they did in October – Burak Yeter featuring Danelle Sandoval stick at number six with “Tuesday”, while Ofenbach remain in the runner-up spot with “Be Mine”. They narrowly fail to overtake Earl’s “Tongue Tied”, which spends a third month in pole position. However, there are more strong challengers in the top ten this month – including the highest of three brand new entries. Last month’s Chartbuster from Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark comes straight in at number five, becoming the twelfth top forty hit for the electronic/synth-pop band from Merseyside, England. It instantly beats the peaks of all of the others except their previous success from 2010 – “Sister Marie Says”, which reached number four – and their very first, “Maid Of Orleans (The Waltz Joan Of Arc)” from 1981. That was caught just behind “A Bunch Of Thyme” by Foster and Allen in the third of its nine months at the top. Camila Cabello is just as close to the top of the UK top forty at the moment with “Havana” – and although that only makes slight progress through the breakers, advancing from 105 to 101 in the extended chart, her earlier collaboration with Machine Gun Kelly, “Bad Things”, climbs six places to number four. It’s one of ten upwardly mobile hits this time – and the Rapid Riser is the former Chartbuster by Axwell ^ Ingrosso, “More Than You Know”. A chart-topper in Austria and Germany, it races up sixteen places to number nine. One of the tracks making room for those new arrivals in the top ten is this month’s fastest faller – after peaking at number five last time, the former Hooverphonic singer Noemie Wolfs unluckily dives eight places to number 13 with “Trying To Pretend”. A total of twenty-four hits declining this month include the longest laster – Marco Z hangs around for a fourteenth appearance with “Fill My Life Up”, sliding two places to 32. So he’s still above the other two new entries, both of whom are from acts making their chart debuts. Kesha, the 30-year-old singer, songwriter and rapper from Los Angeles, California, arrives at 33 with the first single from her new album, “Praying” – while the Canadian indie rock band Arcade Fire sneak in at 40 with “Everything Now”, the title track from their fifth studio album. In much the same way as almost everything recorded by Rihanna, it is arguably better without their vocals . . . . .

This month’s trawl through the archives for overlooked gems focuses on the first full year in which my age was in double figures – 1975. I hadn’t even begun to think of buying records back then – but if I had, I may well have been impressed by “I Love To Love” by Tina Charles and “I’m On Fire” by 5,000 Volts – on which Tina also provided the lead vocals ! “Girls Girls Girls” from Sailor, “Music” by John Miles, and the title track from a Chas and Dave album, “One Fing ‘N’ Anuvver” could all belatedly be on their way to the top forty too, in another very poor month for eligible new potential hits. Despite some rather vulgar lyrics, “Back To You”, a recent sales and streaming success for former actor and footballer Louis Tomlinson, who found greatest fame as a member of the boy band One Direction, could make him the second of that group to reach my chart. It also features the 28-year-old American singer, songwriter and producer Bebe Rexha, and the British DJ, record producer, singer, songwriter and remixer Nicholas Gale, better known as Digital Farm Animals - both are looking for a first hit here. However, guaranteed to achieve that next month with the new Chartbuster are an alternative rock and psychedelic pop band, formed in Portland, Oregon back in 2004. Their latest single is their most successful ever in their homeland, and it has also been making progress up the charts of various other countries – even the UK, where its thirteenth week in the top 100 becomes its first inside the top forty. My Record of the Month for November 2017 is Portugal. The Man, and “Feel It Still”.

Has Kylie ever successfully made it all the way to #1 in your chart? Sorry if this has been mentioned in the past.

From your latest chart i'm loving these:

02 02 04 BE MINE Ofenbach ##

I'm loving this, i entered this into the FSC earlier in the year and won. :o :P I really didn't think it would be that popular so i was amazed at how well received the song was.

33 ---- 01 PRAYING Kesha

Better late than ever. Does this mean you've managed to buy Praying as a physical single or did you buy Kesha's album?

36 32 05 BLACKBIRD Norma John

Aww, i thought it was criminal that this didn't qualify for the final. As much as i loved Portugal's gorgeous ballad, i was rooting more for Finland.

01 [ 00 ] FEEL IT STILL Portugal. The Man [Chartbuster] ##

Ohh i would love to see Feel it still breakthrough into your main chart. Does this also mean you've bought the single/album? Excellent choice for your record of the month. :D

13 [ 13 ] ...BABY ONE MORE TIME Britney Spears <--- seriously?
14 [ 16 ] MAMBO No. 5 (A LITTLE BIT OF...) Lou Bega
15 [ 17 ] BLUE (DA BA DEE) Eiffel 65

I'm loving seeing these in your bubblers. Did these never make your chart at the time, they're all from 1999?

Best of the rest:
