Thanks again, Benny - that series wasn't as widely networked in the UK, I think some regions just showed it occasionally on weekday afternoons, It must have been in a better timeslot on one of the main German channels, also viewable in Austria (where the theme reached number two) and Switzerland (number eight).

Just two new entries back in that month of 1979 - and now . . . . . yes, just two new entries in my last chart of 2017!

Their second hit of the twenty-first century, and their twelfth in total, becomes the first number one for Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark (OMD) this month. “One More Time” is one of eleven climbers in the top forty, moving up four places to become my 230th chart-topper, and it’s also one of no fewer than six former Chartbusters now in the top ten. The others include last month’s top two from Earl and Ofenbach – “Tongue Tied” and “Be Mine” both dive five places, landing at six and seven respectively. But Harry Styles rises six places to number eight with “Sign Of The Times”, and Axwell ^ Ingrosso advance another five places to number four with “More Than You Know”. Possibly the strongest challenger to become the first number one of 2018, however, is November’s Chartbuster from Portugal. The Man – “Feel It Still” comes straight in to the chart at number five. The only other new entry is by someone who previously reached number one with “Just So” – the 37-year-old singer-songwriter from Denmark, Agnes Obel. “It’s Happening Again” arrives at number twenty-six. Among twenty-seven hits on the way down, Hooverphonic have the fastest faller this time, as “You” tumbles nine places to number 27, and Marco Z continues to be the longest laster with “Fill My Life Up”. That slides five places to 37 in its fifteenth, and possibly final, month in the top forty. Meanwhile, the Rapid Riser is Kesha, racing up eighteen places to number 15 with “Praying”.

1991 is the year providing five previously overlooked potential hits for the top forty breakers this month – although it would have been difficult to overlook Bryan Adams’ “(Everything I Do) I Do It For You” back then, as it spent sixteen weeks at number one in the UK. Very successful too elsewhere in Europe were “Bacardi Feeling” from Kate Yanai and “Desenchantee” by Mylene Farmer. The former performer is a singer-songwriter from Los Angeles, Kate Markovitz – while another Kate, Kate Ryan from Belgium, has already taken her cover version of the latter song to number four in my chart. Meanwhile, the most well-known act with a new breaker this month are surely R.E.M., the American rock band with worldwide successes over several decades. They previously fell twenty-three places short of a top forty entry in my chart with “Everybody Hurts”, but could now be on the way to improving on that with “Losing My Religion”. In complete contrast, Captain Gumbo are not even famous enough to have a Wikipedia page that runs to more than four sentences in Dutch – although they are still touring almost three decades after their only marginally significant chart success in their homeland, “Allons A Laffayette”, and have released six albums. That’s two more than (Kate) Earl, whose title track from her latest has been one of the biggest successes in my chart in 2017. “All That Glitters” may be about to become her second top forty entry – and “Katchi” might prove to be an impressive follow-up to “Be Mine” for Ofenbach. Featuring Nick Waterhouse, it has already reached number one in France and Mexico. But it’s another single currently riding high in the charts of her homeland that, as this month’s Chartbuster, is guaranteed to become the first success for a 21-year-old singer from Hénin-Beaumont in France who took part in that country’s version of “The Voice” in 2013. Her number one hit there at the beginning of 2015, “Avenir”, didn’t make it through the breakers into my top forty, peaking only at number 85 – but she is already twenty-three places higher than that with her latest release. My Record of the Month for December 2017 is Louane, and “Si T’etais La”.

Now, let's turn the clock back again - and to a time when, at least as far as my chart was concerned, I seemed to be looking forward to Christmas somewhat more than I do nowadays ! Twenty-eight years ago, I was frequently obtaining singles from continental Europe that I hadn't been able to find in the UK - so there were quite a few here that had originally been released rather earlier than . . . . . December 1989. Here's what I was enjoying at the age of twenty-five, while working hard towards the last promotion I would ever receive at work.

Thanks again, Benny ! :D

Something that sticks in my mind about "Lambada" is that in the week when it was heading for the top forty in the UK there were technical problems, with the result that the chart was not finalised in time for the Sunday evening Radio One chart show. They only had data covering six days of the week, I think - so, announced with something along the lines of "as far as we can tell at the moment, it looks as if Kaoma have the first new entry at -" . . . . ."NUMBER FORTY" ! (Bruno Brookes used very loud jingles at this time).

When the missing data was eventually added, it turned out that "Lambada" was at number forty - although some of the hits above it moved around, and there was a higher new entry that hadn't been known about on the Sunday. It was very unusual back then for hits in languages other than English to chart in the UK, so this one did well to go on to peak at number four. This was the same position as it reached in my own chart - where foreign language hits have always been much more common !

. . . . . and this had already been the case six years earlier, in the second of this month's retro charts. There weren't as many Christmas singles charting when I was nineteen years old, and had just completed my fourth term (or I think they were called "semesters") at university - but the highest new entry was a comedy celebration of that special time which had previously charted in Ireland a Christmas earlier. And the same artist who was at number one in December 1989 was also there in December 1983 ! Here's the full list of what I was enjoying thirty-four years ago.

Indeed - and it did well elsewhere too ! One of very few hits that went to number one in the Europarade without ever scoring in the UK. :o

Just one hit remains in the same position in my first chart of 2018 that it occupied in the last chart of 2017 – and it’s the number one, as Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD) stay at the top for a second month with “One More Time”. Although last month’s runner-up may no longer be a likely challenger – “Little Hollywood” is among twenty-five tracks moving down, sliding two places to number four for Alle Farben and Janieck - there are three other potential chart-toppers, all of them former Chartbusters, completing the top five. Nine climbers this time include Axwell ^ Ingrosso, advancing again from four to two with “More Than You Know”, and Portugal. The Man with “Feel It Still”, up two places to number three. Neither of these could reach the top end of the UK charts, despite hanging around for quite some time lower down – although their success elsewhere was considerable. And we surely won’t ever see Louane charting in the UK – but her latest single, “Si T’etais La”, has been seriously impressing music buyers in her French homeland recently. For the third month in succession, the Chartbuster has entered my top forty at number five. Four other new entries are evenly split between the new and the (very) old. “Katchi”, featuring Nick Waterhouse, means that Ofenbach replace one top ten hit with another – as “Be Mine” slides four places to number eleven, the follow-up crashes straight in at number nine – while Earl remains in the top ten with her former number one “Tongue Tied”, down two at eight, and adds a new hit at number sixteen with “All That Glitters”.

Meanwhile, after being close to the top forty for a few months since I heard it a few times on Rex’s “VRD Archief Parade”, “Rock And Roll Star” sneaks in at number forty for Champagne, a Dutch pop and disco quartet consisting of Paulette Bronkhorst, Trudy Huysdens, Jan Vredenburg and the now deceased Bert Van Der Wiel. This was the first and biggest of eight hits for them in their homeland in the late seventies and early eighties, but attempts to spread this success into countries such as France and the UK – where they were rebranded as “Dutch Champagne” and “Bubbley” respectively, no doubt to avoid confusion with other similarly-named groups – unfortunately failed. Now in her seventies, but still very well known on Italian television – where she was a coach and judge on the most recent series of their version of “The Voice” – Raffaella Carra scores another hit in my top forty, her ninth, with “Fatalita”. Originally from 1984, that arrives at number thirty-seven. She also has the fastest faller this month, as “Ratatataplan” dives ten places to thirty-one – while the longest laster is Hooverphonic’s “You”, down two spots to twenty-seven and just above the Rapid Riser. Nothing is ascending faster this time than “Everything Now” by Arcade Fire, up six places to number twenty-eight.

Most unexpectedly, Sara Cox’s Friday night show on Radio 2, “Sounds Of The 80s” provides two new back-catalogue breakers. The only section of this that I listen to is the one in which she revisits the UK top five from a week of that decade, playing the number one in full followed by the number one of another country – and normally the latter is something that would be very familiar to UK listeners anyway. However – in hopefully a good omen for future shows – this month she included a Swedish number one from 1986 that I don’t believe I had ever been previously aware of at all, and a Spanish number one from 1987 that I only vaguely remembered. “The Way You Are” by Agnetha Fältskog and Ola Håkansson, and “Soul Survivor” from C.C. Catch could now be on their way into my top forty for the first time. Alongside them are two other chart-toppers from the late 1980s – “Especially For You” by Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan, which was a number one in the UK and elsewhere, and “St Elmo’s Fire (Man In Motion)” which was a Billboard number one in the USA for John Parr.

Dance music used to make much more of an impact on my top 40 – although nowadays it doesn’t tend to be as successful in the national charts that I follow regularly, so I’m hearing less of it. In an attempt to rectify this – but also because it was presented by one of my new favourite DJs, Evelyn De Backer - I listened in full this week to the top 100 Ultratop dance hits of 2017. However, just one previously unknown track to me stood out above all the rest. Apparently released towards the beginning of 2017, “Araya” by Dutch producer Bas Bron, billed as “Fatima Yamaha”, arrives at number 100 in my extended chart this month – nine places higher than a recent Belgian chart-topper by Regi (Penxten). That’s “Where Did You Go (Summer Love)" – featuring (but not necessarily crediting) Alexander. However, as it makes its debut a little higher – number 94 – the new Chartbuster is a guaranteed third top forty success for a 38-year-old singer, songwriter, dancer and actress from Pennsylvania. Both of her previous hits were from 2012 – but she has been impressing music buyers all around the world much more throughout this century, having apparently sold over 47 million albums and over 70 million singles. My Record of the Month for January 2018 is the title track and latest single from her seventh studio LP, which has quickly become a number one album in many countries – “Beautiful Trauma”, by P!nk.

Well, my latest January chart created what Sir Humphrey might have described as "masterly inactivity" - but here now is the very first January chart, going all the way back to 1980 ! I had only discovered, and was very much enjoying, the chart shows of the UK (presented by Tony Blackburn) and Ireland (presented by Larry Gogan - although it was Ken Stewart sitting in on the first Sunday of this month, and Vincent Hanley on the second one). Little did I know that the latter programme was about to disappear from the airwaves for the next eight months! I was fifteen, in the fifth form at school, studying hard for eight O-levels to add to the one (Mathematics) that I already had - and this is the music I was enjoying thirty-eight years ago.

Nice song by the Bellamy Brothers, one of only two songs by them I know (besides 'Let Your Love Flow').

Thanks, Benny - both of those still get significant airplay these days, I think ("Let Your Love Flow" to a greater extent, perhaps). There's only one other song from them that I ever charted - "I Need More Of You", which I heard in the Austrian chart. I don't think it performed very well elsewhere, however.

Incidentally,

She didn't seem to like it, though . . . . .

Now, I realised - with some surprise - while doing the UKmixParade year-end countdown recently that I hadn't posted any of my own year-end charts here since the one that covered 2011 ! I have always based the annual lists on tracks first released in that year - even if it was some time later that I discovered and charted them - with the result that they can't really be finalised until all the hits released in a particular year have dropped out of my monthly top forty. However, by now, that does seem to have happened for 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015 - so at around the middle of each of the first four months of this year, I'll be posting an extra list looking back on those years. Even if 2016 and 2017 can't be finalised by May and June respectively, I think I'll then do as up-to-date as possible versions of the lists for those years too.

When I posted my 2011 chart, I wrote:So how was 2011 for music ? Well, we were definitely beginning to enter a ( sadly, possibly irreversible ) decline in the availablity of music in physical formats - and perhaps the general quality of releases was decreasing too. Just fifty-five from a total of eighty-one breakers from 2011 entered the chart, making this a rare year in which I would have to consider the other CD singles that I bought, but didn't regard as good enough to even list as breakers - for a full-length chart.
And things haven't really improved since then - indeed, they have become much worse. There were slightly more breakers from 2012 than from 2011 - eighty-eight. However, there were fewer hits, just fifty. But there were other 2012 singles that I did buy, which didn't seem to me to be quite good enough to even make the breakers. Looking back on these now, some of them might just possibly go on to appear in the breakers in the future, as I am continuing to bring in selections of less-than-current releases as well as brand new recordings in the hope of creating more chart entries and faster chart turnover. But others, five years on, are creating more of a feeling of "why did I ever think that was worth buying?"

So I have expanded the format of the annual chart very slightly - instead of just a single lengthy list, I have divided it into several parts - one of them completely new, but also disappointing and frustrating. Early in the present decade, we sadly reached the situation in which some tracks did not receive any physical release at all - even on a compilation album, which (whether on vinyl or CD) would enable them to be eligible for inclusion in any of the higher sections. Thankfully, this doesn't yet seem to be a major problem - with only two tracks from 2012 falling into this category. Including them brings the total number of hits, breakers and others here to 122. So - after what turned into a somewhat longer introduction than I had planned when I started ! - here is everything that I liked, even slightly, from 2012 . . . . .

I was checking just now whether that had an official release as a single in many countries - it didn't in the UK. It seems not - it was only a rather minor chart success in France and Spain.

31 23 13 ANOTHER LOVE Tom Odell

This one is there pretty much entirely based on the "Zwette" version - which I think I remember you expressed a preference for too back at the time. It doesn't feel like five years ago - but time just seems to pass so quickly nowadays . . . . . .

Incidentally, congratulations on your very high position in the "Favourite Members" poll. As I voted this time, you climbed twice as many places as you would otherwise have done ! :D

Now, time for the second of this month's revisits to a much more bygone age. I was twenty-two years old, in my second year as an audit assistant, and (by using timer-switches to record them while I was at work) enjoying the chart shows of several European countries. That's how I discovered most of my favourites of thirty-one years ago :

Thanks again, Benny - it's difficult to remember thirty-one years later, but I suspect that this was indeed the reason for Abba's version of "Waterloo" reaching my chart at that time !

Now . . . . . strangely enough, a member of Abba has a brand new entry in my very latest top forty !

Eleven climbers in my second chart of 2018 include a new number one – my 231st, and the first to be sung in French for two and a half years. Twenty-one-year-old Louane moves up four places to the top with the former Chartbuster “Si T’etais La”. Although not making much of an impact elsewhere, this has already spent many weeks near to the top of the charts in her French homeland, peaking at number two. However, three of the other climbers are close behind her in the top five. Portugal. The Man rise into the runner-up spot with “Feel It Still”, now a top twenty hit in the UK – while both Earl and Ofenbach follow up their considerable successes “Tongue Tied” and “Be Mine” with “All That Glitters” and “Katchi” respectively. “All That Glitters” is this month’s Rapid Riser, racing up from sixteen to four, while “Katchi” ascends four places to number five. Last month’s number one, “One More Time”, completes the top five by sliding to number three for Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark. That’s one of twenty-five tracks moving down this time. The others include the longest laster from Hooverphonic – “You”, down six places to 35 in its thirteenth month – and joint fastest fallers from the Mixtures and Clean Bandit featuring Zara Larsson. “The Pushbike Song” dives from 25 to 34 - while “Symphony”, the only current top forty hit not available on vinyl, could be in its final month in the chart, descending from 30 to 39. Meanwhile, there are four new entries – including a chart debut for Fatima Yamaha, a pseudonym for Dutch electronic music producer Bas Bron. “Araya” arrives at number 25. Seventy-two-year-old singer, composer and producer Ola Håkansson makes his debut eight places higher with “The Way You Are”, a duet which was recorded in 1986, together with the slightly younger and considerably more well-known Agnetha Faltskog. Now sixty-seven years old, she has previously had over a dozen hits as part of Abba and seven more solo successes – including the number ones “I Won’t Let You Go” and “The One Who Loves You Now”. Bizarrely, though, this duo is not the oldest entering the top forty this time – as Chas and Dave, now seventy-four and seventy-two respectively, arrive at number 40 with “One Fing ‘N’ Anuvver”, originally the title track of their first album in 1975 but re-recorded much more recently. This now becomes their eighth hit in my chart – while Pink gets her third with the highest new entry. Last month’s Chartbuster, and the title track of her latest and massively successful album, “Beautiful Trauma” crashes straight in at number ten.

This month saw the sad deaths of two very different female singers who clearly had special places in the hearts of vast numbers of people in their Irish and French homelands – as well as being extremely well known internationally for some of the most successful releases from their long careers in the music industry. Dolores O’Riordan, leader of the Cranberries, passed away at the age of forty-six, for reasons not yet explained – while France Gall reached the age of seventy, but had battled various cancers and experienced other tragedies in her life. “Dreams” and “Ella, Elle L’a” – among many singles reappearing in the charts of several different countries in the last few weeks – now return to the breakers. There too for the first time are five previously overlooked potential hits from the year 2001 – “King Kong” by E-Rotic, “Je T’aime (Moi Non Plus)” from Sven Vath with Miss Kittin, “Us Against The World” by Play, “Win The Race” from Modern Talking and “You’re My Mate” by Right Said Fred. And there are three somewhat more recent releases that could also be chartbound. London Grammar reached number two in my top forty five years ago with “Strong”, and could finally follow this up with “Hell To The Liars” – while I have taken quite some time to see even the slightest merit in any release by the twenty-six-year-old singer, songwriter, guitarist and record producer that is Ed Sheeran. It’s the latest song to spend many weeks at number one in the charts of multiple countries, “Perfect”, that could be about to give him his first success in my top forty. However, the new Chartbuster is by a 41-year-old singer possibly most well-known in his Belgian homeland for his cover version of David Bowie’s “Life On Mars”, which was a number one hit there fifteen years ago. He is currently back in the top ten for the first time since then, with my Record of the Month for February 2018 - Jasper Steverlinck, and “Here’s To Love”.

Thanks, Benny - the breakers chart seems to be becoming more and more dominated by the older singles, perhaps largely because there are still relatively few new releases impressing me these days. The state of current music continues to become worse rather than better, at least as far as I'm concerned - back catalogue titles now typically fill more than a quarter of my latest top forty, and I don't think that trend is likely to be reversed any time soon . . . . .

But now it's back to a time when I was finding much more to like and buy in the charts of the UK, Ireland, the Netherlands and other parts of Europe. I was nineteen years old, half way through my three years at University, and these were my favourites of thirty-four years ago :

Thanks again, Benny. It's clear that the English version of the song by Masquerade (the late Drafi Deutscher, I'm sure you know) was the first to make an impact with me - and it was quickly released in the UK, but wasn't a hit here at all. However, all three versions by Nino De Angelo were combined in my chart, and went on to become the most successful there. I heard both the German and Italian versions in the weekly Europarade programmes - but it wasn't until a while later that his own English version was released in the UK and Ireland. Although it spent nine weeks in the top 100 in the UK, it only reached a disappointing peak of number 57 - but in Ireland it was in the top thirty for nine weeks, peaking at number eight ! Meanwhile, Vicky Leandros recorded versions in Dutch and French - and they also reached the top three in my chart. I don't think there are many other songs that have gone so high in my chart for three different artists.

Now, exactly halfway through February, it's time to look back more fully on a sadly much less impressive year than 1984 in the second of my new monthly revisits to the past - but not very far into the past. 2013 is that year - and even taking purchases that weren't even good enough to reach the breakers into account, I can't quite manage to complete a full annual top 100. I think the same problem will be equally true for all further years since then - indeed, I fear that there will be gradually fewer and fewer eligible releases as we get nearer to the present. But this is only the second time in all the years I have been interested in music that there hasn't been enough I have liked - the first time being 2004.

A more positive development (for me, at least) was that by 2013 vinyl releases seemed to be starting to become more widely available. Indeed, out of forty-eight tracks of this year that entered my top forty, just two were on CD only - and just six of the thirty-four others that didn't make it through the breakers were equally impossible to find on vinyl. A mere fifteen other 2013 releases impressed me slightly at the time - and, five years later, I'm struggling a bit to recall why in some cases ! None of those were released on vinyl - but I was able to find all of them on either CD singles or (typically more expensively) CD albums. All in all, though, that's a total of just ninety-seven 2013 releases that I bought. And here they are !

I find it surprising that Dido's record company have rarely, if ever, released her albums on vinyl - her work has sold so many CDs that an alternative format would surely generate a lot of additional revenue. It wouldn't just be me that would like some of them on LP !

Now, back to a time when everything was released on vinyl - and almost everything that I was hearing on the radio could be obtained on seven-inch single. Although I might not have been aware of this then (I didn't have a CD player), a lot of tracks were being released on CD singles as well. It was the year 1991, I was twenty-six years old - and, while somehow muddling through my first few months in a managerial role, I was enjoying a lot of continental chart hits. This was my monthly chart of twenty-seven years ago:

A bunch of great tunes, notably the songs by Bette Midler and a-ha (in both cases I didn't know for a long time that they were cover versions!), Mecano, ABBA and Münchener Freiheit. Regarding the latter, there's also an English version called 'Everytime' which isn't bad either.

I had heard Nanci Griffith's "From A Distance" first - because, like "Guardian Angel", it did impressively well in the Irish chart but poorly (in this case, not even charting at all) in the UK - but I don't think I would necessarily have been aware of earlier versions of "Crying In The Rain" at that time either.

Münchener Freiheit....there's also an English version called 'Everytime' which isn't bad either.
Almost unbelievably, I discovered the existence of this English version of "Ohne Dich" for the first time ever only in the past fortnight ! It's one of a few extremely late discoveries that I'll be including in the breakers in this month's new chart (although if it goes on to reach the top forty, its points will be combined with "Ohne Dich"). I think it was the day before yesterday that the seven-inch single of "Everytime" I ordered arrived. :D
