'Making Your Mind Up' is one my favourite ESC winners ever. :P
Thanks again, Benny - all of those made it to number one in the official charts of at least one country, although the one by Raffaella Carra was the only one that went to number one in my chart. Indeed, excluding the very first chart, it was the first single that entered my chart at number one !

The Bucks Fizz song is certainly my favourite UK winner - although we have only had one since, in 1997. I doubt that there will be any more any time soon !

Now - another month has gone by, and once again there haven't been any impressive recent releases that have become available on CD or vinyl. But there is a new number one in my new chart . . . . .

Last month there were two joint Rapid Risers – “The Carnival Is Over” by the Seekers and “Homesick” by Dua Lipa. This time, the former single retains that title, racing up another thirteen places to number sixteen – while the latter climbs two places to become my new, and 233rd number one. Although the 22-year-old singer/songwriter has had two other chart-toppers in the UK, with “New Rules” and “One Kiss”, neither of them has even reached my top forty breakers. Her only other appearance there was with “Be The One”, which went on to spend eleven months in my chart, and peaked at number nine. “Homesick” features uncredited vocals from Chris Martin of Coldplay – who had three top forty hits, including the number one “Viva La Vida”. So this becomes his second chart-topper. Eight other tracks are moving up this month – but none of them are in the top five, which contains all three of the hits occupying the same positions in July as they did in June. Jasper Steverlinck spends a fourth month at number five with “Here’s To Love”, Pink holds on to the number four spot for a fourth month with “Beautiful Trauma”, and Ed Sheeran remains the runner up with “Perfect”.

Completing the top five, last month’s number one from Rondo Veneziano, “San Marco” slides to number three – that’s one of twenty-five hits going down, but, unusually, none of them drop very significantly at all. Declines of four places each to 13, 14, 25, 31 and 32 for “Feel It Still”, “Katchi”, “Little Hollywood”, “On My Mind” and “Tuesday” respectively mean that Portugal. The Man, Ofenbach featuring Nick Waterhouse, Alle Farben and Janieck, Disciples and Burak Yeter featuring Danelle Sanoval are all joint fastest fallers. All of this (lack of) movement leaves room for just two new entries. One of the most well-known of many compositions by the late Henry Mancini, his theme from “The Pink Panther”, sneaks in at number 40 - while last month’s Chartbuster arrives ten places higher for Lost Frequencies and Zonderling. This number 30 debut for “Crazy” is actually the lowest for a former Chartbuster since October 2010, when Jacqueline Govaert arrived at number 35 with the perhaps appropriately titled “Overrated” – that went on to become the only Chartbuster of the past fifteen years that didn't reach the top twenty, when it peaked at number 21. But of course “Crazy” may – or may not – improve on that in the months ahead. Among eleven current hits that have already spent more than a year in the top forty (!), the longest laster is now “Hear Me Now” from Alok and Bruno Martini featuring Zeeba. That former Chartbuster and former number one slides two places to 36 as it makes its fifteenth appearance.

It is thirty-five years since I first heard the Dutch top forty chart show on Friday afternoon, then presented by Lex Harding. This week saw the arrival of only the fifth new regular presenter since then, as Ivo Van Breukelen succeeded Erik De Zwart, Gijs Staverman, Wessel Van Diepen and Jeroen Nieuwenhuize. Ten 1983 singles that didn’t reach my chart back then now have belated opportunities to do so. Five of them charted in the UK – and most of them in many other countries too – for the Flying Pickets, Irene Cara, Matthew Wilder, Rita Coolidge and Status Quo. The last-named act could double their tally of hits in my top forty in the months ahead with "Marguerita Time", as they previously reached number eight with “Burning Bridges” – while “Only You”, “Flashdance (What A Feeling)”, “Break My Stride” and “All Time High” would, if they advance into the chart, be the debut hits for all of the others. And equally devoid of past successes here are Belgium’s Nathalie and New Zealand’s Tim Finn, new in the breakers with “My Love Won’t Let You Down” and “Fraction Too Much Friction” – as are three Dutch acts. “Don’t Feed The Animals”, “Een Beetje Van Dit” and “Starting At The End” could belatedly become hits on my chart for Fay Lovsky, Vulcano and Doris D and the Pins. Meanwhile, as none of these arrive inside the top 100, and there is once again not a single worthy and eligible more recent release that has impressed me since this time last month, the new Chartbuster is the biggest climber into the 41-100 range from below it. Making exactly the same move that Lost Frequencies and Zonderling did in June – a rise of twelve places from 102 to 90 – it is a 22-year-old French singer that is now guaranteed a place in August’s top forty. My Record of the Month for July 2018 is Angèle Van Laeken, and “Je Veux Tes Yeux”.

You've reminded me to look for one of those CDs with Charli's Boys on it - Pop Party 2017 seems the cheapest option.
It seems her next proper album is a long time away and may not even feature Boys so...

I did look for last year's ESC album in HMV but they no longer have it. Maybe City Lights (my #1 of 17 also) is gonna be on Blanche's album soon after the current single? I'll hold out a bit longer!

"Boys" does seem to be on a few compilation CDs - although, disappointingly, not on any vinyl release as yet, even though two of her previous albums were available in that format !

I would hope, and expect, so - I think I recall reading an interview with her in which she said the album was planned for this year, before she returns to her studies?

Having already been decades behind in discovering that there was an English version of "Ohne Dich", I found out only this month that the Flying Pickets also released a German version of "Only You" - "Nur Dein Clown". I don't know whether sales of this single would have been combined with the original - which seems to have been their only hit in Germany, spending twenty weeks in the chart and peaking for one week at number one (at the end of February 1984, a couple of months after it went to number one in the UK).

Now, this month's first retro chart - and music was so much better, and so much more easy to obtain in a physical format, when I was almost exactly half my present age. I was beginning my second year as a first-year manager (!) - little suspecting that I was less than a year and a half away from semi-retirement. And it was one of the very rare months in which the same act - one of my all time favourites - held numbers one and two in my chart, with the two sides of their latest single . . . . .

That was on its way to a peak of number eight in my chart - it fared best in their homeland, Austria, where it reached number two. I would have discovered it in the Dutch chart shows - it was a top ten hit in the Netherlands. But, like so many impressive singles from continental Europe back then, it failed to catch on in the UK. One week in the top 100, at number 93 !

It did - but it wasn't as successful or as long lasting as Nanci Griffith's original. The only Bette Midler single I ever bought, it peaked at number five and stayed in my chart for seven months.

Another version of this song reached my top forty briefly as well - Elaine Paige peaked at number 38, appearing for just three months.

Now, it's half way through the month - and, having caught up with the most recent annual charts not previously posted since the beginning of the year, from now on I'm going to update one of the earlier years at this time. Several tracks originally released some further time ago have only charted in the past few years. occasionally quite some time after their original year of recording - and when I posted the annual charts in the more distant past, I often limited them only to a top 100 (yeah, right - as if I'm ever going to find anything close to a hundred tracks I like from 2018 or any year yet to come ! ) or indeed just to the top forty hits plus top forty breakers appearances. So these will be lengthier, more full retrospectives of bygone years - starting this time with the only year to date in which all efforts to obtain my favourite single of the year on vinyl have failed . . . . .

Thanks again, Benny - "Titanium" was one of very few hits that reached number one both in my chart and in the UK. I still hear those, and some of the others you listed, quite often on the radio. In the case of Fun, though, although they had a few other successes back then, "We Are Young" seems to be the only one that still gets played now !

Now, the second monthly retro chart for July - and back to the time when I was very nearly twenty-one years old, and had just graduated from University, and was soon to start work for the first time ! This was the music I was enjoying thirty-three years ago:

'Sounds Like a Melody' and 'We Belong' are by far my favourites! Sadly, the former is a little bit forgotten nowadays, in contrast to Alphaville's other two big hits, 'Big in Japan' and 'Forever Young'.

Thanks again, Benny - yes, it seems like a very long time since I've heard "Sounds Like A Melody" played on the radio, whereas the other two are regularly featured on several programmes and stations I listen to.

Now, another brand new chart - not many new top forty entries, but a much bigger selection of new and returning breakers . . . . .

There are just two non-movers in my top forty this month – and they’re right at the top, as Ed Sheeran spends a third month in the runner-up spot with “Perfect”, behind Dua Lipa who, with a little help from Chris Martin, remains in pole position with “Homesick”. However, two of this month’s ten climbers are not far behind them in the top five – “Zoutelande”, one of the most successful Dutch-language singles ever in both Belgium and the Netherlands, rises eight places to number three for Bløf and Geike Arnaert, while a song released more than fifty years ago races up eleven places to number five. “The Carnival Is Over” by the Seekers is the Rapid Riser for a third consecutive month, having already moved from 40 to 29 to 16 – although it shares that honour this time with an even older single, “Nut Rocker”, from 1962. B Bumble and the Stingers’ take on a Tchaikovsky march goes up from 24 to 13 – just ahead of the higher of only two brand new entries. That’s 22-year-old singer/songwriter Angèle Van Laeken, with her recent hit in her Belgian homeland – last month’s Chartbuster, “Je Veux Tes Yeux”. Recorded decades before she was even born, the only other new arrival is “Beautiful Lover” from Brotherhood of Man, sneaking in at number 40 and following up their very belated first success on my chart, “Oh Boy (The Mood I’m In)". That spent fourteen months in my top forty – while brother and sister Johannes and Mina Leegstra now match that total with the instrumental recorded when they were just sixteen and fourteen years old. Entering my top forty in July 2017 and climbing in all of the next twelve months, “Mühle Im Schwarzwald” now dives nine places to number fifteen, making it this month’s fastest faller. It’s one of twenty-six tracks going down, and one of twelve current hits that have stayed in the chart for at least a year. The longest laster is still the former Chartbuster and former number one by Alok and Bruno Martini featuring Zeeba – “Hear Me Now” hangs on in for a sixteenth month, sliding from 36 to 39.

Twenty years ago, satellite television enabled me to watch and hear many continental television and radio stations – especially German ones, on several of which there were interesting music and chart-based programmes. Many more promising singles reached the breakers in 1998 than nowadays – and five that didn’t make it through into the chart back then now have a second chance. They are “Better Best Forgotten” by Steps, “Es Ist Vorbei” by Blümchen, “Flugzeuge Im Bauch” by Oli P, “Gigolo” by Los Umbrellos, and “Halt Dich Fest” by Nicole. More recently, for various reasons I wasn’t able to appreciate this year’s Eurovision Song Contest or some of its entries at the time – but four of the best submissions now arrive in the breakers. From Belgium, there’s Sennek with “A Matter Of Time” and from Estonia there’s “La Forza” by Elina Nechayeva – while Lithuania offered “When We're Old” by Ieva Zasimauskaitė, and Moldova presented the very cleverly staged “My Lucky Day” from DoReDoS. One of the most successful hits around Europe – including the UK - so far this year could also become a future hit on my chart for Calvin Harris and Dua Lipa – “One Kiss”. But a stronger contender for Chartbuster this month was a new version of a Eurobeat success from the late 1980s, Man Two Man Meets Man Parrish’s “Male Stripper” – Dresden-born Tino Piontek, billed as Purple Disco Machine, with “Dished”. However, it is a guaranteed eleventh hit for Belgian guitarists Alex Callier and Raymond Geertz, who have been joined by various different female vocalists over more than twenty years of chart success in their homeland, and occasionally elsewhere. The latest singer is 17-year-old Luka Cruysberghs, the most recent winner of “The Voice Of Flanders” – and the first single featuring her is currently spending its seventh week in the top twenty in Belgium. My Record of the Month for August 2018 is Hooverphonic, and “Romantic”.

You prefer PSB's version to the one they did for Liza? The vocals are less theatrical, obviously. Not sure if i can rank either above the other myself.

Male Stripper should have been left alone.

Same here - even the German chart now seems to have become almost as full of (c)rap as other parts of Western Europe. Although I have more new "current" breakers this time than for a while, that's largely because I have finally caught up with this year's Eurovision Song Contest.

My all-time ranking is based on a non-linear points system - so although the Pet Shop Boys reached number one in my monthly chart with "Losing My Mind", this was in lower-scoring months than those in which Liza Minelli's version peaked at number four. So that's actually one of five tracks that reached number one for one act, but another act is higher with it in the all-time chart !

Time already for the first monthly retro chart of August - and thirty-six years ago I was awaiting the results of the three 'A' levels I had recently sat, reasonably confident that I would pass two of them with the grades I needed to begin studying at University a couple of months later. And this was the music I was enjoying - discovered largely in the UK and Irish charts, as it wasn't until the end of 1982 that I would begin to find the chart shows of other countries . . . . .

^ Indeed so ! One of the trio featured on this hit was Denise Gyngell - who went on to be married to record producer Pete Waterman for most of the 1990s.

Now, we're half way through yet another month - so it's time to revisit a year from the not-too-distant past, but one in which CD singles were still fairly widely available. And indeed the vast majority of the tracks that reached the breakers and those that went on to enter my top forty were also released on vinyl ! Including quite a few songs that were originally released eight years ago - but which I only discovered more recently, and therefore weren't listed the first time I considered that year - this is my best effort at a full-length chart of the year 2010. I have today tried to sort the bottom end, those "that at least appeared at the time not to be completely without some merit", into some kind of proper order - but for those now at the bottom of the pile, I really do find myself thinking "Why did I ever think this one was worth buying? Maybe it was extremely cheap . . . . ." :D

Thanks, Benny. None of Hurts' singles have reached my top forty - although they have had four breakers, these three plus "Blood, Sweat And Gold" (which, before I had heard of it, I remember mis-spelling as "Blood, Sweat And Golf" in the UKmixParade!). Now that Steps have lost their record of ten breakers with no top forty entries - as their eleventh and twelfth breakers became massive successes in my chart last year - just two other acts have had more than four breakers with no hits. They are Inna with five, and Haddaway with six.
