Time already for the first monthly retro chart of August - and thirty-six years ago I was awaiting the results of the three 'A' levels I had recently sat, reasonably confident that I would pass two of them with the grades I needed to begin studying at University a couple of months later. And this was the music I was enjoying - discovered largely in the UK and Irish charts, as it wasn't until the end of 1982 that I would begin to find the chart shows of other countries . . . . .

^ Indeed so ! One of the trio featured on this hit was Denise Gyngell - who went on to be married to record producer Pete Waterman for most of the 1990s.

Now, we're half way through yet another month - so it's time to revisit a year from the not-too-distant past, but one in which CD singles were still fairly widely available. And indeed the vast majority of the tracks that reached the breakers and those that went on to enter my top forty were also released on vinyl ! Including quite a few songs that were originally released eight years ago - but which I only discovered more recently, and therefore weren't listed the first time I considered that year - this is my best effort at a full-length chart of the year 2010. I have today tried to sort the bottom end, those "that at least appeared at the time not to be completely without some merit", into some kind of proper order - but for those now at the bottom of the pile, I really do find myself thinking "Why did I ever think this one was worth buying? Maybe it was extremely cheap . . . . ." :D

Thanks, Benny. None of Hurts' singles have reached my top forty - although they have had four breakers, these three plus "Blood, Sweat And Gold" (which, before I had heard of it, I remember mis-spelling as "Blood, Sweat And Golf" in the UKmixParade!). Now that Steps have lost their record of ten breakers with no top forty entries - as their eleventh and twelfth breakers became massive successes in my chart last year - just two other acts have had more than four breakers with no hits. They are Inna with five, and Haddaway with six.

There are eight climbers in my September 2018 chart – and one of the biggest is the new, and 234th, number one. July’s Chartbuster and August’s highest new entry races up thirteen places to the top for 22-year-old singer/songwriter Angele van Laeken, as “Je Veux Tes Yeux” becomes the second song in French to reach pole position this year. The only other newcomer last time, the very belated second success for Brotherhood of Man, climbs fourteen places to number 26, making “Beautiful Lover” this month’s Rapid Riser – while there are an impressive eight brand new entries. The highest, arriving at number ten, is “Romantic” - last month’s Chartbuster, and potentially a second chart-topper, for Hooverphonic – while two others make their debuts inside the top twenty. Three decades ago, Man Two Man Meets Man Parrish peaked at number 25 with “Male Stripper” – but a remake of this by Purple Disco Machine, “Dished”, instantly improves on that by eight places. Three spots lower, number 20 is the entry position for one of the biggest selling, most streamed songs of 2018 – “One Kiss” by Calvin Harris and Dua Lipa. It’s the third hit for the 34-year-old DJ and producer from Dumfries, Scotland, and the first not also involving Ellie Goulding. Perhaps an even more well known DJ, Avicii, gains a twelfth hit with “Without You”, one of his last releases before his death earlier this year. New at 31, it’s the second success in my chart featuring vocals by Sandro Cavazza – the first was “Beautiful Life”, one of two number ones by Lost Frequencies. The other, “Reality”, featured Janieck Devy – who now has a solo hit, “Does It Matter”, in at 36. Two of this year’s Eurovision Song Contest entries also sneak into the top forty – Belgium’s Sennek with “A Matter Of Time” at 38 and Moldova’s DoReDoS with “My Lucky Day” at 40 – while the final new entry is for someone who won the contest thirty-six years ago at the age of seventeen. Now a grandmother, but still releasing new albums almost every year, Nicole gets her thirty-second top forty entry. “Halt Dich Fest”, which only reached number 80 when originally released in 1998, now enters at number 36. Meanwhile, twenty-four tracks move down this month, including the longest laster from the Gilde Duo and the fastest faller by Ofenbach. “Muhle Im Schwarzwald” slides four places to number 19, making its fifteenth appearance, while “Be Mine” dives thirteen places to 39 after almost as long in the chart.

This month’s trawl through the archives for overlooked potential hits focuses once again on the year in which I originally discovered pop music – 1978. In the latter part of that year, Blondie, the Dooleys, the Motors, Olivia Newton-John and Dollar were doing well in the UK charts with “Picture This”, “A Rose Has To Die”, “Forget About You”, “Hopelessly Devoted To You” and “Shooting Star” respectively – and all of those now appear in the breakers for the first time, alongside five promising much more recent releases. Brazilian singer and producer MC Fioti has been charting all over the world with a variety of versions and remixes of “Bum Bum Tam Tam”, while the success of 53-year-old Dana Winner has been almost entirely in her Belgian homeland. Two out of her four previous breakers (and many, many single releases) have gone on to reach my top forty – and “Als Je Zingt”, a cover version of Tanita Tikaram’s “Good Tradition”, could become the third. “Faded”, “Alone” and “Sing Me To Sleep”, the three previous hits for Alan Walker were all former Chartbusters – but his latest offering is only the third highest new arrival in the breakers this time. That’s “Darkside”, featuring AU/RA and Tomine Harket. Just above that is the fifth breaker, and potentially the fifth hit, for Zedd – “Happy Now”, with vocals by American singer Elley Duhe. But the new Chartbuster, guaranteed to enter the top forty next time, will become the seventh hit for a 50-year-old DJ, remixer and producer from Turin, Italy. Two of the others, “Silence” and “The Summer Of Energy”, went all the way to number one in my chart much earlier this century – but, like all his other previous releases, did not dent the UK chart at all. However, this latest one, already topping the charts in some parts of continental Europe, has finally given him some significant success in the UK. Could the magic ingredient be the Lithuanian producer/remixer about which very little seems to be known? My Record of the Month for September 2018 is Dynoro and Gigi D’Agostino, with “In My Mind”.

Now, there were an unusually high number of new entries in this month's chart - eight - but, in years gone by, there were occasions on which many more than that arrived all at once ! And an example can be seen in the first retro chart for September - going back to when I was twenty-two old, beginning my second year of full-time work, and also studying hard for the first of my professional exams. Meanwhile, I discovered a lot of impressive new singles, many of them from the charts of continental Europe. Thirty-two years ago, this is the music I was enjoying:

Thanks again, Benny - perhaps surprisingly, "Live To Tell" was one of Madonna's least successful hits on my chart. Generally her later works, and some of the less successful songs in the UK, fared better. Here's the full ranking of her twenty-nine chart entries:

That's quite a surprise! I prefer her 80s and 90s songs to her later songs, though their are a few exceptions.

Thanks again, Benny - looking back, I didn't really rate much of Madonna's earliest work at all. "Live To Tell" was actually the first of her singles to reach my chart - and "Dear Jessie" was the second, more than three years later. Of the eleven singles in between them, only "Like A Prayer" was a breaker - and of the ten that came before "Live To Tell", the only one I bought was "Material Girl" !

Now, this month's "recent" retro year was one in which Madonna "celebrated" her joint highest peak on my chart. Since I posted this annual list the first time, only Agnes Obel has added a new hit - and it went all the way to number one! - and the Asteroids Galaxy Tour had a belated breaker (when their album was eventually released on vinyl!). So there's very little change to the hits and breakers - but I've added in all of my other purchases from the year in question. Once again, in many cases I'm now thinking, "why did I buy this?" - although if my recent difficulties in finding impressive new releases continue, some of them could be brought into the breakers in the months and years ahead. Nine years ago, this is the music I was enjoying . . . . .

Wasn't Flo Rida the featured rapper on this and not Pitbull?

Ah . . . . . you're right, of course ! It looks as if this must have been wrong in some, most or all of my files ever since its release - I'll need to make the necessary corrections at some point.

I suppose this also reveals that I sometimes find it difficult to tell the difference between featured rappers - and, more often than not, I rather feel that the songs would be better without them . . . . .

Now, here's the second monthly retro chart for September - and the first one, just over a year since I had begun compiling a monthly chart, in which there was a new entry at number one. I was sixteen years old, in my first month in the sixth form at school, and only studying subjects I actually wanted to ! Another improvement was that all the school bullies and disruptive elements had finally left, hopefully finding other outlets for their thuggish tendencies. And I was enjoying the chart show of the UK on Sunday afternoons - while the Irish one was temporarily off air, but was about to return! Thirty-eight years ago - before, I suspect the vast majority of UKmix members were born ! - this was the music I was listening to . . . . .

29 ---- 01 D.I.S.C.O. Ottawan

I wonder why they didn't manage to at least score a minor hit in the U.S.

I like all these, especially Johnny Logan's ESC winner. Did his other ESC winner, 'Hold Me Now' from 1987, also enter your chart?

I've never really followed the US charts at all - I did try briefly, probably at around the time Ottawan were having massive success in the UK and most of Europe. But it seemed to be a different genre of music that was finding favour there - not the kind that I really liked. I don't think much Euro pop or Euro dance was ever finding its way there - certainly nowhere near the top end.

It did - but only for one month, and during the period in which my chart was a top fifty ! "Hold Me Now" was at number 45 in my chart of August 1987 - much less successful than "What's Another Year", which stayed in for nine months and peaked at number nine.

Although I don't think any of them travelled any further than Ireland, he had nine other top thirty hits there. The only one I believe I'd have the slightest chance of recognising if I heard it again now would be his cover version of one of 10cc's biggest successes - "I'm Not In Love".

Interesting, I always thought that he was a two-hit wonder!
