Wow, Titanium has had an amazing chart run! Looks like it's about to leave your top 40, but I hope it'll remain here at least one more month. By the way, what song did spend the most months on your chart ever?

Well, their first hit got to the top forty more quickly - and remained there for a long time:

ICH BIN ICH (WIR SIND WIR)
119 104 77 68 40 30 25 21 21 21 21 21 29 34 29 29 30 31 32 38 45 52 57 61 68 74 77 89

but their second took much longer to get there:

GIB MIR SONNE 124 119 111 107 107 107 95 82 32 27 34 39 40 43 47 54 66 74 81

So, although it hasn't exactly moved at a very fast rate so far in the last five months:

120 109 106 104 103 ...

"Lied von den Vergessenen" might still get there at some stage! :D

It may well do - I'm certainly still hearing it played on the radio, all this time after its original release.....

That's a question that, incredibly, hasn't ever been asked in all the years of this thread!

It was revealed, however, in one of my yearly charts which track stayed in my chart for an unprecedented and never matched 42 months - three and a half years! This was its full run, starting in the very first chart, August 1979:

06 12 20 28 21 20 21 21 05 02 03 02 01 03 02 03 04 05 05 07 07
08 17 21 10 10 19 10 10 16 16 16 08 05 07 16 12 07 20 25 27 34

Bizarrely - as can be seen in the link - it wasn't even my number one of that year !

Having just done some checking, I have discovered that less than one percent of all my top forty entries from the last thirty-three years, just twenty-five tracks, have spent seventeen months or more in my chart - so I've decided to put together a bonus feature, hopefully for posting in the next few days, covering all of those! Thanks for giving me the idea.

Never heard of a Top 40 breaker before, what is that? Songs that are about to make it to the main chart but don't do it? So something like Billboard's Bubbling Under Hot 100? :)

Video Games still charting.. 8-)

Yes, exactly right - the promising new releases initially go into the top forty breakers, and they may or may not eventually climb into the main top forty. It's based mainly on the Dutch Tipparade - but other countries have developed the same sort of "hits in waiting" concept too. I don't know how exactly Billboard's Bubbling Under works - but I'd guess that it's a very similar idea!

Now, here is that short bonus feature I promised - covering the all-time longest-running hits from nearly four hundred monthly charts. As well as all the usual details, I've added the full chart runs - and an extra column revealing the current position of each track on the all-time list. Not surprisingly, several of the tracks featured here are very high on that list - but there are also a few that spent most, or even all, of their seventeen or more chart appearances outside the top twenty. One of them went no higher than 30, bouncing around the bottom end of my top forty for nearly two years!

There are already quite a few very long tracks here - four are close to five minutes, the song that tops this list runs to six minutes, and I've included the full nearly-fifteen minutes version of my all-time number one! Also, to bring the full presentation up to a two-hour YouTube journey this evening, there was time for a few more extended versions, so I included seven- to eight- minute mixes of some of the dance tracks (I don't think I had ever heard such a long "Japanese Boy" before!). So, without further ado, here is the full list.....

ICH BIN ICH (WIR SIND WIR) is the better choice, so it charts somewhat right. A lower top 40 hit (#39 for one week) would be nice.

Thanks for the recent comments! :D

Time now for the penultimate five-year chart - so, with only two periods up to the end of 2009 remaining to be featured, which one is it this month?

I wrote:Top of that list are BZN, who originally had several hits in the first half of the 1980s, but didn’t get to number one until June 2007
So, there is some overlap with the "longest lasters" list - as several of those came from 1980 to 1984. This was an especially good period for music for me - it was the time when, at school then at university, I first discovered the charts of countries other than the UK and Ireland - including, of course, the Europarade! As a result, many continental releases appear here - including my number one of all time. This latest six-hour countdown involved a little less forward planning than most, as that number one is available in so many different lengths, up to nearly fifteen minutes - with that flexibility in the final hour, there would be no difficulty in finishing exactly on time, even if some of my favourites from this period were too obscure to be found on YouTube. Two from that category have actually been uploaded there since I previously featured 1983 individually, in the form of releases by Swiss instrumental duo Diethelm / Famulari and the rather more well-known..... Sarah Brightman! This leaves six absentees - but, as there were three singles that reached number one in my monthly chart without scoring enough points to reach this combined top hundred, I began this trip back in time with them. Ninety-seven tracks in six hours.....easy! And now, here they are:

These are my favourites ones from your top 100 of 1980-1984. :D

"The Power Of Love" is epic, I prefer the Jennifer Rush version to the Céline Dion cover from 1994. "When The Rain Begins To Fall" is one of those few songs that was huge all over Continental Europe but was only a minor success in both the UK and the US (which is really strange as both singers are American :o). Tight Fit sounded like Abba on "Fantasy Island" (especially on the chorus).

Yet again there is a new number one - the seventh so far this year, as “Better Than A Dream” by Katie Melua joins six other former chart-toppers among twenty hits moving down this month’s top forty. They include the longest laster - David Guetta featuring Sia, clinging on in at number 38 after eleven months with “Titanium”..... the fastest faller, “Epic”, which dives twelve places to 23 for Sandro Silva and Quintino.....and her predecessor at the top, from Fun featuring Janelle Monae. “We Are Young” falls just one place to number three, leaving two of last month’s newcomers fighting it out for pole position. In the end, Scottish quartet Django Django narrowly miss out, as “Default” climbs six places to number two, while Regina Spektor leaps up a massive thity-four positions, and “Don’t Leave Me (Ne Me Quitte Pas)” becomes my 196th number one. It’s the third success for the 32-year-old Moscow-born singer/songwriter, who previously reached number ten with “On The Radio“ and number 11 with “Samson”. Not surprisingly, it’s this month’s Rapid Riser, with none of the other thirteen climbers this time advancing more than ten places each. Among those also upwardly mobile, Australia’s Emma Hewitt gets a third top ten hit, as “Colours” races up from 20 to ten, and Switzerland’s Heidi Happy is there for the first time, moving up another eight places to number six with “Sarah”. From the Netherlands, Caro Emerald is one place higher, as “You Don’t Love Me” becomes her third top five success - but, perhaps more significantly, “Dr Wanna Do” ascends four places to number 18. That’s now her eighth top twenty hit from the same album, “Deleted Scenes From The Cutting Room Floor”!

There are six new entries this month, and the second highest goes to the only act involved who have had more than one previous hit - the Scissor Sisters. They spent five months at number two with the UK chart-topper “I Don’t Feel Like Dancing”, then peaked at number 13 with “Fire With Fire” - and now “Only The Horses” is in at 29. Two instrumental dance tracks from continental Europe make their debuts in the bottom ten - Todd Terje with “Inspector Norse” at 32 and Michael Calfan with “Resurrection” at 37 - while Colina sneaks in at number 40 singing “Du Und Ich”. Meanwhile, Fun’s second hit from their current album “Some Nights” is its title track - arriving at 34, just two months after its predecessor (and thirty-three places lower!) - which leaves July’s Chartbuster as August’s highest new entry. Dubbed by some as “We No Speak Americano 2012”, but not yet generating much interest except in the Netherlands, WTF! are straight in at number 15 with “Da Bop”.

There have not been many previous top forty entries for the performers of the six new breakers this month. The only one among them with more than one prior hit is Lana Del Rey - who has had three major successes, in less than a year. “Video Games”, “Blue Jeans” and “Born To Die” all reached my top five - indeed, in March, all three were there at the same time. Her latest continental single, “Summertime Sadness”, could be the next - although it is quite a long way away at the moment. So are recent releases by Train and Calvin Harris - who already have five other current breakers between them. “50 Ways To Say Goodbye“ joins “Drive By“ and “Hey, Soul Sister“ for the pop/rock band from San Francisco, while “Let‘s Go“ joins “We Found Love“, “Bounce“ and “Feel So Close“ for the 28-year-old Scotsman whose birth name was Adam Richard Wiles. It features Ne-Yo, also still looking for a first hit - his only previous appearance in the breakers was as one of Pitbull’s sidekicks on “Give Me Everything” - as is 30-year-old German singer Oceana, whose “Endless Summer” has already reached the top five in her homeland. Paloma Faith peaked at number 21 with her first breaker, “Do You Want The Truth Or Something Beautiful”, and might now follow that up with “Picking Up The Pieces” - while the track guaranteed to enter in September is only the second breaker for a Canadian producer whose career began in the late 1990s, and who chose a stage-name based on something he once found in his computer! He reached the top three in my chart with “I Remember”, a collaboration with American DJ Kaskade - and next month his new Chartbuster, inspired by a short story by the recently-deceased Ray Bradbury, and featuring guest vocals by Chris James, will be his second hit. My Record of the Month for August 2012 is Deadmau5, and “The Veldt”.

Thanks! I now remember noticing that it was getting fairly close on Saturday evening.

It has taken just a few days more than five years, but less than thirty pages.....

From those figures, I make the weekly averages very close to three posts, but over 380 views ( and it was probably much less at the beginning, a bit more now! ) - all are very much appreciated.

Years ago, I could never have imagined that there could ever be so much interest in my personal chart - and, of course, in the many dozens of other personal charts in the forum!

In this month's chart commentary, I wrote:.....a Canadian producer whose career began in the late 1990s.....
And there's the clue to the only remaining five-year period up until the end of 2009 that I haven't already featured here! Now, half-way through August, it's time for a slightly longer trip back in time than usual, with a six-and-a-half hour YouTube journey through my favourite hits of 1995 to 1999 !

This was a time at which the average track length seemed to be on the increase - hence I realised at a very early stage that it was going to be impossible to fit the whole top hundred into the usual six hours - but also a period in which the quality of music in general seemed to take quite a downturn, at least as far as I was concerned.

It couldn't have helped that the only weekly charts I was able to keep in touch with for much of this period were those of the UK and Germany - but I was certainly finding far less music that I liked than previously. Indeed, only the top five tracks from this list joined ninety-five earlier releases in my top hundred of all time!

However, there were still quite a few impressive tracks in these five years - including many that might reasonably be described as Eurodance! - and twenty-nine made it all the way to number one in my monthly chart. One of those didn't quite qualify for the top hundred, but as usual I have included it anyway. Without further ado, here they all are!
