01.(NE) Janelle Monáe - Cold War (Hot Shot Debut)

If I'm being honest, I actually forgot about Janelle as an artist. Checked out this song, not really my style so maybe that's why.

20.(RE) Lily Allen - 22

Not always the biggest fan of Lily, but I think she is talented and I do enjoy this song!

Thanks for introducing it to me! I actually hadn't heard it before. I like it more with each play.

I'm happy you at least checked it out. For me, the lyrics are so relevant to our global society today. We're so deeply divided that I think Janelle's warning to make sure we know what we're fighting for is sound advice.

I still haven't re-visited Butterfly and "The Beautiful Ones" There's just been a lot of new music that's captured my attention lately (including Camila's album! I know you had mixed feelings about her personally, but you were a big advocate of "Havana" and even "Crying In The Club" to an extent, so have you given it a chance?) Plus the Grammy effect (since I actually sat down and watched the whole thing live this year, possibly for the first time ever...?)

• Did something put you in a romantic state of mind today? Not that one really needs any particular reason to re-discover that lush Ari offering.
• Despite her being a much-buzzed-about name for several years now, I've never really looked into Janelle's catalog, but her speech on Sunday was undoubtedly a highlight of the ceremony! Almost as moving as the "Praying" performance (without even being a performance!) "Cold War" is a BOP, though :o I wasn't expecting such peppy production, but even more props to her for making a song with substance that still gets you on your feet! I'll be adding it to my library the second after I hit "Submit."
• Lovely to see "Dancing" back! Video effect? That line dancing routine is too adorable for words. <3
• God knows the King of Pop has more than a couple of classics to his name, but "The Way You Make Me Feel" is the one I revisit most often.

Yet another glowing chart, Akini! :D

Happy to hear you've been enjoying the recent music releases. I did check out Camila's album, and I was underwhelmed. Beyond "Havana" and "Never Be the Same," there really weren't any keepers, just decent pop songs that I could do without ever hearing again.

Nope, I just really love "Moonlight" now.

Yeah, I love the uptempo melody, too, and the lyrics are so relevant! It's a perfect song really, and I have cheapthrills to thank for introducing it to me. I'm elated to read that you love it as well! :D

Yep! The video is sub-par, but I still like the song. It relaxes me.

Really? That is an odd pick for favourite, but I think the song is fairly underrated actually, so good that you appreciate it. You do have a history of appreciating unheralded gems, so perhaps I shouldn't be too surprised. <3

Hey Akini :D

01.(RE) Lady Gaga - Joanne (Best Comeback)

I read your comment in the pop forum and loved the name check. Is this the original version or new piano version you're charting? Hearing the song as a ballad works so beautifully and it makes me think this is how the song should've sounded all along. A bit like when Kelly Clarkson did the idol version of Piece by piece. Some songs just work better as ballads.

04.(05) Rudimental - Feel the Love (feat. John Newman) (Greatest Gainer)

Great to see John Newman making an appearance here. Despite his success over the years, i still think he's an underrated talent. One of my personal favourite male singers. I'm looking forward to hearing some new music in 2018 but hopefully it won't be another cringe fest like Olé.

05.(NE) P!nk - Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken (Highest Debut)

Iirc this just narrowly missed out on making my top 20 after the album was released. The music video has definitely given the song a new lease of life but i personally still don't think this is single material.

11.(NE) Birdy & RHODES - Let It All Go

Wow :o What led to this entering now for the first time? This was as instant as it could possibly get when it was released and became the first ever song to debut at #1 in my chart just 24 hours after release.

13.(RE) Janet Jackson - Rhythm Nation

Undeniable classic. 8-)

Damn. I got my hopes up thinking we'd be more in-sync when it comes to Camila. I mean...I'm not about to crown it one of the greatest albums of all time, but it's definitely more up-my-alley than the recent influx of pop/rock/country-ish efforts we got from the formerly-poppier/dancier ladies like Gaga, Kesha, P!nk, Miley (and then pop/R&B/soul-ish in Kelly's case.) Comparisons aside, though, I'm just feelin' it <3 Pretty much from start to finish (albeit to slightly varying degrees), which I was NOT expecting! It's probably the most pleasantly-unexpectedly-consistently-enjoyable album for me since I checked out Dua's (which I remember also underwhelmed you. Ah well...)

JSparksFan wrote:Yeah, I love the uptempo melody, too, and the lyrics are so relevant! It's a perfect song really, and I have cheapthrills to thank for introducing it to me. I'm elated to read that you love it as well! :D
You can absolutely count on seeing it on my next chart!

That feels like a much gentler way of saying "you like the random-ass tracks that nobody else does"...but I'll still take it  Thanks! :D

o Great to see the new piano version of "Joanne" help Gaga nab another No. 1 here! How many does this make from that album now? "Perfect Illusion", "Million Reasons", the title track...? I just got around to giving the piano version a listen, and I was expecting to come away from it like "It's nice/sweet/touching, but I'm fine sticking with the original"...but it's actually a much closer call! It's no surprise that Gaga can nail a ballad, but this rendition (of a track I already liked well enough) is grabbing my attention more than I thought it would.
o Lovin' the Top 10 debut for "Casanova" - but that's a version I've yet to hear :o The original has been one of the standouts from her CollXtion II that I added a couple weeks ago. I just added this mix too, so we'll see how it fares!
o Many thanks for still giving "Curious" a proper chance after your lukewarm (at best) first impression! I especially love the sexy little "yeah"s at the end of the first couple lines of the chorus, and then the faster bit is just so damn catchy (without sounding like total gibberish, though I did have to Google the lyrics to figure out everything she's saying...)

Yet another chart that's a delight by any name, Akini! :D

It's the new piano version. I think the piano instrumental is the perfect fit for the song.

I'm not sure how my mind stumbled upon that one, but I enjoyed "Feel the Love" quite a bit a few years ago, and it seems to be ageing terrifically.

Well, if we're comparing it to the other ladies' records, I'd say it's better than Miley's, on par with Kesha's and P!nk's, and well below Gaga's and Kelly's.

Perhaps when I revisit it, I'll feel differently.

It makes six.

Million Reasons - 7 days
Perfect Illusion - 2 days
Dancin' in Circles - 1 day
Diamond Heart - 1 day
Sinner's Prayer - 1 day
Joanne - 1 day

I actually prefer the piano version to the original! That's the version that's #1. I just don't like the title of the piano version, but the sound >>>

I should probably check out the original mix then!

I especially love the sexy little "yeah"s at the end of the first couple lines of the chorus, and then the faster bit is just so damn catchy (without sounding like total gibberish, though I did have to Google the lyrics to figure out everything she's saying...)
It's LGBT+ positive so it was always going to get a second chance.

I actually prefer the piano version to the original! That's the version that's #1. I just don't like the title of the piano version, but the sound >>>
:o Totally forgot that Joanne spawned that many chart-toppers here! No wonder Camila ranks "well below" it for you  On the topic of Joanne, I guess my fondness for "Come To Mama" is a pretty perfect example of my aforementioned "appreciating unheralded gems" ;) So true about the new version's title, though! I vaguely recall people getting the title of "A-YO" wrong on social media after her SNL performance (I think they were calling it "Mirror On The Ceiling"?), so I wonder if that played into Gaga's decision to add that ridiculously-long parenthetical part to this one (since it'd be easy to think it's called something other than "Joanne" after only hearing it once, like on The Grammys.)

The only major difference I can detect is that VÉRITÉ takes over the second verse (though the lyrics seem identical to the album version), instead of Allie singing everything herself on the original. I actually like that change, though, since it gives the track a bit of a female-solidarity angle that was missing on the solo original. It's like the titular Casanova's angry ex-lovers have united against him on the duet version.

Hayley's lady-lovin' ways savin' the day! 8-)

• I'm diggin' this stroll down DC Memory Lane (especially with "Bills, Bills, Bills" leading the pack!)
• I don't know much of Bastille's work, but "Pompeii" was among my biggest hits of 2014 (landing at No. 12 on that year's Top 50.) "Of The Night" had me pretty hooked too. That one was such a clever mash-up!
• In a somewhat-similar situation to MJ's "The Way You Make Me Feel", I find myself going back to "Telephone" more often than a lot of Gaga's other early hits (including "Bad Romance" and "Poker Face.")

Yet another chart that's one of the best, Akini! :D

Yeah, and on top of those six #1 hits, Joanne was my #3 album of 2016, behind Lemonade (arguably the best album of the decade thus far) and 24K Magic (arguably the best album by a male act this decade). For me, Joanne was such a great return to form for her, and the fact that she could go down a more country-pop route and still keep the quality of her music high was really impressive. It's the first album where we really get to focus on her criminally underrated, gorgeous voice (I'm not counting the Tony Bennett duet album, which most people under 50 haven't heard).

I like "Come to Mama" as well! It was particularly relevant after November 8, 2016.

Ah, so this means the VÉRITÉ version is even better for you? Awesome sauce! :D

Well, it's Black History Month so expect lots of black artists to feature prominently over the next three weeks.

"Pompeii" was #30 on my 2013 year-end list, but having revisited it these last few days, I'm thinking it should have been at least 20 places higher.

Ah, "Telephone" is so epic! I was just lamenting the other day that it's been a while since we've had a really good diva duet, and "Telephone" just might be the best one we've had this decade!

Ah, it's my nerves! I'm waiting for something to come through, and patience is still a skill I haven't perfected, so my anxiety is at a higher-than-average level now. Kylie's voice is so soothing, though. She's helping me get through the wait.
