I heard "Edge of Seventeen" for the first time this weekend and I was so perplexed those first 10 seconds. Both songs put that guitar riff to excellent use.

It's definitely among her Top 3 uptempo cuts!

Something extraordinary would have had to happen to deny a Whitney song top honours on February 11. :(

I was thinking about it, and "Titanium" is a strong contender for my favourite song of the 10s decade. It is so empowering!

Words would fail to describe the brilliance of "We Belong Together". That's how a diva makes a comeback.

JSparksFan wrote:Yeah, and on top of those six #1 hits, Joanne was my #3 album of 2016, behind Lemonade (arguably the best album of the decade thus far) and 24K Magic (arguably the best album by a male act this decade). For me, Joanne was such a great return to form for her, and the fact that she could go down a more country-pop route and still keep the quality of her music high was really impressive. It's the first album where we really get to focus on her criminally underrated, gorgeous voice (I'm not counting the Tony Bennett duet album, which most people under 50 haven't heard).
 I can certainly testify to that!

JSparksFan wrote:Ah, "Telephone" is so epic! I was just lamenting the other day that it's been a while since we've had a really good diva duet, and "Telephone" just might be the best one we've had this decade!
**Nod** We've had our share of underwhelming high-profile female collaborations in recent years ("Can't Remember To Forget You", "Pretty Girls"...I'd even put "Bang Bang" in there, since I think it pales in comparison to a lot of those ladies' individual singles), but "Telephone" REALLY delivered!

• I added Ctrl to my library a couple weeks ago, and it's been pretty hit-or-miss for me overall, with "Pretty Little Birds" falling into the "Miss"/skip column...so far. There's some great lines/metaphors throughout, and I love the way she sings the "when the spiral down feels as good as the fliiiight, when hating you feels good for the niiiight" part...but the way she sings the title when the chorus repeats comes off a little too shouty/screechy for me. That's probably just her way of pouring emotion into the line, but it just rubs my ears the wrong way.
• "Prom", however, is firmly perched at the very top of the "HIT" column! Such an uptempo, poppy-sounding track totally comes out of left field on that album, but it totally works! Again, there's a lot of great lines throughout, but I'm especially endeared by the Wizard Of Oz references: "hoppin' through poppy fields, dodgin' evil witches, these houses keep droppin' everywhere...". I think the track is pretty brilliant from start to finish, though, and it's had me hooked since the first listen. <3 <3 <3
• I feel like I need to do some penance for having never heard of this Madonna track before :o I never knew she'd contributed more to The Next Best Thing than "American Pie." On first listen, I'm liking it! It sounds like something that could've come from the Ray Of Light sessions (but a little more uptempo/interesting than much of that album...) Guitardonna often does it for me ("One More Chance", "Joan Of Arc", etc.), and this fits into that group quite nicely. Huge thanks for finally putting an end to my ignorance!

Yet another high-flying chart, Akini! :D

The Gaga/Christina "Do What U Want" remix was fantastic, though!

Which column is "The Weekend" in?

SZA's songwriting is almost as layered as Lorde's. I didn't like the Ctrl album the first time I heard it, but over time, I'm finding more and more gems among what I had considered rubble. The highlight of "Pretty Little Birds" is the bit I tried to quote in my thread title, My wings don't spread like they used to, but I wanna fly with you. It's a "Moonlight"-esque climax, placed right at the end, and I love how the male vocal joins her in that moment - they're both broken down from previous relationships, with bleaker views and expectations of love, but they want to give their relationship a chance to be something special.

"Prom" was perhaps the second most digestible song for me (after "The Weekend") so no surprise to hear you enjoy it, too. You seem to like it more than I do!

I actually just discovered it through biscuit's UKMixtape game. Glad you also enjoy it. I think Madonna has a gorgeous voice for ballads.

That happens sometimes.

It's definitely more pop-leaning than most of her typically work, and that works in its favour for me. I love the grand chorus!

I don't think I ever downloaded that version  Mostly because I was already so content with/fond of the original. I should finally rectify that, though...

Definitely "Hit" - just more toward the bottom of that column. As of right now, it'd look something like:

1.) "Prom"
2.) "Garden (Say It Like Dat)"
3.) "Love Galore"
4.) "Supermodel"
5.) "20 Something"
6.) "The Weekend"

You're absolutely right about her material requiring a second (or third, or fourth) glance to really grasp and appreciate everything she's conveying. Hell, it took at least a handful of listens just for me to catch those Wizard Of Oz references in "Prom" that I find so charming  A comparison to "Moonlight" is a brilliant way to inspire me to give "Pretty Little Birds" some more tries...

09.(05) Kylie Minogue - Finer Feelings
12.(RE) George Michael - Freedom
14.(RE) John Legend - Love Me Now
15.(RE) Madonna - Rain
16.(RE) Little Mix - Wings
17.(RE) Dion - Runaround Sue
18.(13) Céline Dion - That's the Way It Is
19.(RE) Destiny's Child - Bootylicious
20.(RE) Madonna - Take a Bow
• The production/beat in "Pray For Me" really grabs you right off the bat! Does this (combined with the return of your No. 3) mean you got to see Black Panther? The hype for that movie has been REAL, and I'd love to hear your reactions!
• Speaking of your No. 3, I just added it a few days ago, but I can definitely see it overshadowing "Pray For Me" for me (largely thanks to SZA's hook, since I've been pretty hooked on her lately.)
• I forgot to ask this yesterday, but any particular reason for the belated justice for "Finer Feelings"? It's never been one of my Kylie top-favorites, but the Parisian video is pretty lush.

Yet another divine chart, Akini! :D

You should! Both versions are 10/10.

phoenix98 wrote:Definitely "Hit" - just more toward the bottom of that column.

That's what I was going for!

For a long time, it was really "The Weekend" and everything else. Now I think "Pretty Little Birds" has surpassed "The Weekend". "Prom" would be third, "Love Galore" fourth.

I just saw it tonight, and I am just...euphoric. I don't think that even describes my love for it. It's already among my Top 10 movies of all-time, if not Top 5. It's a good weekend to be black! 8-)

The video is also awesome! Have you seen it?

biscuits's UKMix Tapes game is to be credited for introducing me to "Finer Feelings".

Love SZA <3. Only discovered her not long ago, but she is now one of my favorite (new to me) artists.

+ Jump is an underrated song of Madonna! Glad to see 8-)
