Rock music? :D
Not bad, but way too high.
Should I booo the top 4 in advance if it is all UKMIX-y, aka pop/R&B and female sung?

I didn't say Savage Garden are rock, but that's as close to rock music the top 5 could get.

And no R&B left so no Beyonce, Mary J, Alicia or other such holy UKMIX cows! I'm sure you'll love one of them. I won't say you'll be fond of the other three though.

04. Enya – Only Time (2000)

Image

If there’s one song in this countdown which would make me temporarily pause, breathe and let myself get transported into my world of positive thoughts, dreams and hope, then this would be it. It does make me think of my life and where do I stand, and let go of my problems. So haunting, so unearthly, so atmospheric, mostly thanks to Enya’s trademark breathy vocals. Her music may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but IO strongly beg to differ and this has to be her best recording to date. This became a sort of unofficial peace theme, following the 9/11 attacks. Lovely video too, depicting seasons thanks to a change in background scenery.

(Charting here is the album version)

Woo for Run & Freestyler! Neither of those 2 songs were instantly likeable for me, but they grew on me over time. Leona's version of Run just doesn't compare to the SP original IMO.
Let's embrace the point of no return.

Every single song on the Affirmation album (and I mean EVERY song) is absolutely amazing.

03. Sarah Brightman feat. Gregorian Masters of Chant – Moment of Peace (2001)

Image

If you’ve been following this countdown then you might remember me saying that I’m utterly fascinated by Gregorian music, by all this Era/new Age music, and that Sarah Brightman is one of my all-time favourite artists (don’t know all of her discography but her vocals gives me the shivers, and she can turn any lame song into a masterpiece) so this collaboration is a sure-fire winning formula for me.

Image

This was lifted from the second album in the ‘Gregorian Masters of Chant Chapter’ series, and is definitely their best collaboration (others include cover versions of Him’s ‘Join Me’, Kate Bush/Peter Gabriel’s ‘Don’t Give Up’, Bowie’s ‘Heroes’ and Desireless’ ‘Voyage Voyage’). Aptly titled ‘Moment of Peace’, as that’s what sets my mind to when I listen to it. Listen to the song here!

You all know my top 2 songs, no worries!

OK everyone loves Sarah Brightman

02. Shakira – Whenever, Wherever (2001)

Image

Way back in 2001, I was browsing through some random US chart site (with video screen captures under each song title) and I happened to stumble across a screen cap of a very fit lady dancing with horses in the background, having an intriguing name! I decided to check it out and it’s probably the best discovery I ever made on the Internet (after the UKMIX forums of course).

Image

I was immediately fascinated by (a) her quirky vocals, (b) the traditional backing music from the pan pipes, (c) the bizarreness of the lyrics (the breasts & mountains comparison is an eternal classic line!) and of course (d) the obvious beauty of this unbeknown singer. Little did I know that she was about to conquer the world with that track and its parent album!

Image

RANT TIME:

Big big       at the British buying-public for buying that cheap & tacky Will Young single over this pop MASTERPIECE. Who remembers Will's Westlife cover version now? Anyone???

Excellent top 6 except for number 3 (sorry but not my type of music  ).

In the UK "Whenever Wherever" had to settle at number 2 behind Will Young, but here in Germany it was a smash! It entered the charts at number 1 and stayed at the top spot for 11 weeks. At that time, everyone was talking about the line "lucky that my breasts are small and humble so you don't confuse them with mountains"

Yeah, Shaki is cool and this is her best song.
Not that I want to defend the moronic British record buying crowd, but you must surely remember that Will was the first winner of Pop Idol and would have made #1 even if he released a recording of him reading the weather report? I think it sold like 1.3 m that week, Shaki was simply unlucky.
She did make up by having the vastly inferior Hips Don't Lie and Beautiful Liar topping the chart later...

Embrace – Looking As You Are (#1)
Eminem – Lose Yourself (#1)
Emma Bunton – Take My Breath Away (#1)

Supermode – Tell Me Why (#1)
tATu – All About Us (#1)

01. Dido – Here With Me (2001)

Well, how about my #1 song of the whole noughties decade being a song NOT recorded in the noughties?

Image

I didn't hear you leave
I wonder how am I still here
I don't want to move a thing
It might change my memory

Oh
I am what I am
I'll do what I want but I can't hide

I won't go
I won't sleep
I can't breathe until you're resting here with me

I won't leave
I can't hide
I cannot be until you're resting here with me

I don't want to call my friends
They might wake me from this dream
And I can't leave this bed
Risk forgetting all that's been

Oh
I am what I am
I'll do what I want but I can't hide

I won't go
I won't sleep
I can't breathe until you're resting here with me

I won't leave
I can't hide
I cannot be until you're resting here

I won't go
I won't sleep
I can't breathe until you're resting here with me

I won't leave
I can't hide
I cannot be until you're resting here with me

Oh
I am what I am
I'll do what I want but I can't hide

I won't go
I won't sleep
I can't breathe until you're resting here with me

I won't leave
I can't hide
I cannot be until you're resting here

I won't go
I won't sleep
I can't breathe until you're resting here with me

I won't leave
I can't hide
I cannot be until you're resting here with me

The most amazing music debutant of the whole decade, in my opinion, was Dido (whose name reminded me of this!) She became a household name thanks to her inclusion in Eminem’s ‘Stan’ but it was this track which won the hearts of many (well, at least mine) and led her to become one of the biggest album-sellers of the decade!

Image

‘Here with Me’ was first included in the soundtrack to ‘Roswell’ so it was a wise choice for her to release it as her first single. To be honest, I didn’t think much of the song on first listen – and it was only until a few listens till the song swallowed me whole and captivated me. It’s essentially an emotional ballad, but definitely not your middle-of-the-road radio ballad. For starters, Dido’s vocals are angelic; they completely mesmerize you and would even do the Teletubbies song justice!

Secondly, the trip-hop beats all through the song (and the whole ‘No Angel’ album for that matter) take the song to a higher level, giving it a ‘dreamy’ kind of feel, and along with them, lyrics such as “I don't want to call my friends / They might wake me from this dream / And I can't leave this bed / Risk forgetting all that's been” give the song a stronger feeling of hope and belonging. The piano haunts the song from the very first notes to the outro, leaving a sense of continuity, as if she’s still waiting for him to be with her… (well this made more sense in my thoughts!) Check out Sarah Brightman’s version here; she does the song perfect justice!

Thanks for your comments, and the second edition of this countdown will take place in… 2020!

Great number one! I love Dido's two albums "No Angel" and "Life For Rent", and "Here With Me" is one of her best songs. 8-)
