The next up in my series of "I Love's" is 2006. The reason this was an important year for me is because it's the year I became independent, I moved to the city, on my own, started going clubbing 2-3 times a week (sometimes more!), met new friends, new music influences, started going to gigs etc etc...August 2006 was a turning point for me!

What's on the way?

100 PAOLO NUTINI - JENNY DON'T BE HASTY
Image
Reached #20 [September]

After the success of "Last Request", I think Paolo was right to pick something a bit different as the next single, it was upbeat, a little bit indie and fun.

99 MISH MASH - SPEECHLESS
Image
Reached #16 [April]

This was so different to every dance song around at the time, an 80s inspired disco tracks, certainly with bits of Blondie in there. The only issue was it didn't have that big grabbing moment, until you listened to the mash up version with Bedrock Heaven Scent.

98 ROBBIE WILLIAMS - LOVELIGHT
Image
Reached #8 [November]

I know this album was a bit of a joke, but this was a nice song, it was certainly never going to help his disappointing album sales as it was quite quiet and understated, but that's actually what I quite liked about it!

97 GNARLS BARKLEY - SMILEY FACES
Image
Reached #10 [July]

"Crazy" was the monster hit of 2006, but I actually preferred the upbeat, happy follow up, Smiley Faces. Sometimes I find Cee-lo Green's voice a bit annoying, but on this occasion it worked for me.

96 JAMIROQUAI - RUNAWAY
Image
Reached #18 [November]

In previous countdowns, "Love Foolosophy" and "Deeper Underground" have just missed out on a placing, but this one just squeezes in for one of my favourite bands. This was the Jamiroquai by numbers release that fitted effortlessly into their Greatest Hits package.

'Jenny Don't Be Hasty' is amazing. I love Paolo. I want to marry him and make beautiful babies together.

I really like Gnarls Barkey & Jamiroquai, while I don't remember that Mish Mash song and can't stand Lovelight.

95 TILL WEST & DJ DELICIOUS - SAME MAN
Image
Reached #36 [July]

This one took a while to grow on me, I love how the verses get more and more built up until they burst into the chorus.

94 KEANE - CRYSTAL BALL
Image
Reached #20 [August]

After the massive success of their debut album, it did seem that Keane struggled a little to repeat their success with "Under The Iron Sea", I thought this was a really solid single though!

93 LORRAINE - I FEEL IT
Image
Reached #29 [April]

I seem to remember this one getting a decent amount of radio support but it never became the hit it was expected to be. I still really like this one. It's a very feel good soft-rock track.

92 FALL OUT BOY - DANCE DANCE
Image
Reached #8 [April]

This song always reminds me of my days pretty much living in a rock club back home in Grimsby. Possibly their strongest release to date for me.

91 MYLO - MUSCLE CAR
Image
Reached #38 [January]

I Don't know exactly what it is, but I always feel that there's something particularly sexy about this track, it just has a real dirty beat and deep breathing vocals.

Nutini, Keane and FOB are the best so far. Also Same Man is good.
Let's have a second referendum

90 BLACK EYED PEAS - PUMP IT!
Image
Reached #3 [March]

Probably my favourite single from "Monkey Business", this song had such a great energy, Fergie stole the show as is often the case, always a good one to dance to!

89 NELLY FURTADO - PROMISCUOUS
Image
Reached #3 [September]

Nelly had definitely reached a new direction by this single, a heavy Timbaland production, it was cheeky and naughty! Yum!

88 THE STREETS - WHEN YOU WASN'T FAMOUS
Image
Reached #8 [April]

This one proved how awful Mike Skinner is at singing, but it didn't really matter, because the song was really catchy and the drumbeat was so hot, I loved it.

87 NERINA PALLOT - SOPHIA
Image
Reached #32 [October]

Stunning single now that was my favourite from her "Fires" album. A really soft song that shows Nerina's strength as a vocalist.

86 CHICANE F/TOM JONES - STONED IN LOVE
Image
Reached #7 [May]

Chicane really went outside the box by getting a vocalist for this track, nobody realised it was even Tom Jones until it was pointed out to them. Really strong male vocal on a fantastic dance anthem!

Til West was very good.

Chicane/Tom Jones was my #1 of 2006 so I'm very happy to see that in there obviously. 8-)

85 HOT CHIP - OVER AND OVER
Image
Reached #27 [March]

This is one I didn't get into til a couple of years later. A really catchy electro track that was their first UK hit.

84 KEANE - NOTHING IN MY WAY
Image
Reached #19 [November]

My favourite track from their second album, I think this one deserved to be a bit bigger than it was, it had a real feel good optimism.

83 THE KILLERS - BONES
Image
Reached #15 [December]

The most underrated single from one of the most hyped bands of the last 5 years. This song makes me want to dance!

82 ALL SAINTS - ROCK STEADY
Image
Reached #3 [November]

I remember being quite excited about this release. It was their first new single in 5 years and it was like they'd never gone away, a great bouncy track with their usual naughty cheek!

81 FREEMASONS - WATCHIN'
Image
Reached #19 [March]

Yet another dance track to sample Deborah Cox' "It's Over Now", this time it was the Freemasons and the foghorn voice of Amanda Wilson, making great use of the sample.

I like all of that lot. The Killers is actually the weakest song of the bunch for me.

The Hot Chip one is brilliant.

80 FISH GO DEEP - THE CURE AND THE CAUSE
Image
Reached #23 [December]

This is a real grower, one that seemed to take forever to get a release too, I remember hearing it right the way through 2006 and it finally transferred to a chart hit in December.

79 CASSIE - LONG WAY 2 GO
Image
Reached #12 [November]

I think a much better follow up to debut single "Me And U", this somehow had quite a sexy beat, and worked with Cassie's limited vocal range.

78 MADONNA - JUMP
Image
Reached #9 [November]

One of the standout tracks from her "Confessions" album finally became the fourth single and continued it's 100% top 10 hit rate. Catchy and fun with a shiny video.

77 LL COOL J F/JENNIFER LOPEZ - CONTROL MYSELF
Image
Reached #2 [May]

Despite the fact that at this point these 2 were both around the 40 mark, they still managed to drop one of the hottest R&B tracks of the year, sounding really old skool and slick.

76 NINA SIMONE VS.GROOVEFINDER - AIN'T GOT NO, I GOT LIFE
Image
Reached #30 [May]

A great updated version of a Nina Simone classic that I believe Muller are still using on their adverts. Despite only peaking at #30 this one spent 16 weeks in the UK chart!

My DJ mate got me into that Fish Go Deep song, nice tune.

Also love that Cassie tune, even though it wasn't usually my kind of thing at the time.

Yay for Madge, should've been a single a bit earlier than it was. Still enjoy it now. Yay also for Nelly's Promiscuous too.
Let's embrace the point of no return.

75 THE FEELING - NEVER BE LONELY
Image
Reached #9 [September]

My favourite single from The Feeling's first album. Just had a little more soul in it than the slightly irritating "Love It When You Call" and "Fill My Little World".

74 THE HOLLOWAYS - GENERATOR
Image
Reached #30 [October]

A lot of similar "The" bands were coming out at the same time, like these, The Guillemots, The Mystery Jets, The Enememy, The Kooks and The View. This was so fun and catchy and later became a top 15 hit the following year.

73 DAVID GUETTA VS.THE EGG - LOVE DON'T LET ME GO (WALKING AWAY)
Image
Reached #3 [August]

This one was the single that really put Guetta on the map, long before he became rent-a-producer, this was him at his electro best.

72 KEISHA WHITE - DON'T MISTAKE ME
Image
Reached #48 [July]

The first new release from Keisha's "Out Of My Hands" album which came with quite a fun Soul Seekerz remix too.

71 GIRLS ALOUD - WHOLE LOTTA HISTORY
Image
Reached #6 [March]

Still one of my favourite Girls Aloud singles, this was a pretty nice ballad, much better than their identikit upbeat pop tracks.
