This is a really interesting year for me to look back at as it's the year before I started listening to the charts and the year before I started making my own, so there were loads of songs that I'm not familiar with from this year, but I managed to come up with 100 songs that I do love from this year.

1997 ?? - ??
1998 The Corrs - What Can I Do?
2002 Beverley Knight - Gold
2006 Keisha White - The Weakness In Me
2008 The Futureheads - The Beginning Of The Twist
2009 Calvin Harris - I'm Not Alone
2010 Shakira - Waka Waka

On The Way...?

Looking forward to this one...and woo for some old school Robyn in that image list. (I'm partial to a bit of Do You Know (What It Takes) myself, as cheesy as it might sound now.)
Let's embrace the point of no return.

100 ERYKAH BADU - ON & ON
Image
Reached #12 [April]

Probably Erykah's best known song in the UK, she's a huge force, a legend even, in Neo Soul, though I'm not convinced she's ever crossed over to being considered legendary worldwide.

99 PUFF DADDY F/MA$E & NOTORIOUS BIG - BEEN AROUND THE WORLD
Image
Reached #20 [November]

Sampling Rochdale's own Lisa Stansfields Billboard top 3 hit "All Around The World", the Bad Boy family scored another hit with this towards the end of the year, they were an unstoppable force in 1997, more to come from them and Lisa too..

98 CLOCK - IT'S OVER
Image
Reached #10 [March]

I don't know why I had a thing for cheesy 90s covers band Clock. This time it was a cover of a 1983 top 10 hit by Funk Masters.

97 JAMIROQUAI - ALRIGHT
Image
Reached #6 [May]

I'm a big JK fan, though I'm not sure this is exactly one of his best. Funky and fresh as usual, but not quite as catchy as the likes of "Space Cowboy" or "Canned Heat".

96 MONICA - FOR YOU I WILL
Image
Reached #27 [May]

Quite cheesy for Monica, but then it was on the same soundtrack as "I Believe I Can Fly". Sang beautifully, this was a song I didn't hear til I started checking out her earlier material after falling in love with "The Boy Is Mine".

95 MARIAH CAREY - BUTTERFLY
Image
Reached #22 [December]

At the time I always found this one a bit boring, preferring her pop hits like "Fantasy" and "Honey", though I admit it has grown on me over the years and now seems so much more preferable to the dross she's been coming out with the last few years.

94 PAULA COLE - WHERE HAVE ALL THE COWBOYS GONE?
Image
Reached #15 [June]

A one hit wonder now, who didn't really achieve much following her 1998 Grammy award for best new artist. This is a nice song though!

93 SNEAKER PIMPS - SIX UNDERGROUND
Image
Reached #15 [October]

A real laid back chillout track from one of the leading acts in Trip Hop, Sneaker Pimps. Maybe not familiar to all by name, but I bet most people would recognise this song.

92 BABYFACE - EVERYTIME I CLOSE MY EYES
Image
Reached #13 [March]

One of the defining moments in Babyface's back catalogue, though for me it was all about the Timbaland remix, featuring Mariah on backing vocals, that version was way ahead of its time.

91 EN VOGUE - TOO GONE, TOO LONG
Image
Reached #20 [September]

Well I don't know what happened to those vixens who blasted out Free Your Mind and You're Never Gonna Get It, but they still put so much power into their voices on this much softer track.

Butterfly is a gorgeous track, although not the best from that album.

Never knew Paula Cole was such a moose!

Sneaker Pimps is good but I prefer the Armand Van Helden mix of "Spin Spin Sugar" - maybe that's still to come?

Quite like that cheesy Clock song and "Alright" is just alright...

Oh I quite liked that Sneaker Pimps song!

Jamiroquai is alright too (no pun intended).

Some great choices there! Erykah, Jamiroquai and Paula Cole all found their way into my collection that year, but the pick of that bunch is Sneaker Pimps' 6 Underground! Fingers crossed that Spin Spin Sugar might put in an appearance later on.

It's a shame Paula Cole remained a one-hit wonder - "I Don't Wanna Wait" deserved to be a hit, if only for its use in Dawson's Creek!

^No...Armand's Dark Garage Mix.

1997 was the year of Speed Garage afterall...and we have at least Tina Moore to look forward to (hopefully much more from that short-lived genre).

90 DUBSTAR - NO MORE TALK
Image
Reached #20 [July]

One of my favourite wonky pop acts, Dubstar with one of 4 songs to reach the top 20 in their short lived career.

89 MARY J BLIGE - MISSING YOU
Image
Reached #19 [November]

One of three top 20 hits for Mary this year, one more of which is still to appear in this list. Lovely ballad.

88 ROSIE GAINES - CLOSER THAN CLOSE
Image
Reached #4 [May]

One of those classic divalicious 90s dance anthems, Rosie scored her only hit with this track, she still appears on the occasional low key dance anthem.

87 FOXY BROWN F/DRU HILL - BIG BAD MAMA
Image
Reached #12 [October]

Classic 90s hip hop from one of my favourite rappers. Sampling the classic "She's a Bad Mama Jama", this was actually a bigger hit here than in the states.

86 KAVANA - I CAN MAKE YOU FEEL GOOD
Image
Reached #8 [January]

I remember Smash Hits magazine was totally in love with Kav, he was featured in it all over the place every fortnight, but it never translated to hits, this minor top 10 cover of the Shalamar hit was his biggest hit.

I liked what I've heard from Dubstar, but I don't think I'm familiar with that track!

I love the Rosie Gaines track, and Kavana wasn't as bad as most people think. I wonder what he's doing now?

Haha I always remember Smash Hits! featuring Kavana and I didn't know who he was

Rosie Gaines "Closer Than Close" was a good dance anthem from that year. #88 is probably about right for her.
