2000 was a very strong year for music for me, I was totally into R&B, started using the internet and Napster for the first time in the Winter...the Summer was totally full of dance anthems, Ibiza was more popular than ever and the Ayia Napa UK Garage scene was making waves too!

I really had to chop my original list down this time to leave only 100, no room at all for any of Heather Smalls 3 hits from the year...

1997 The Verve - Lucky Man
1998 The Corrs - What Can I Do?
1999 Foxy Brown - Hot Spot
2000 ?? - ??
2002 Beverley Knight - Gold
2003 D Kay & Epsilon ft.Stamina MC - Barcelona
2006 Keisha White - The Weakness In Me
2007 T2 ft.Jodie Aysha - Heartbroken
2008 The Futureheads - The Beginning Of The Twist
2009 Calvin Harris - I'm Not Alone
2010 Shakira - Waka Waka

On The Way...?

100 MOBY - WHY DOES MY HEART FEEL SO BAD?
Image
Reached #17 [October]

Perhaps my favourite Moby song, maybe been a bit harsh placing it this low. Beautifully sung song despite being a little depressing. Reached a place higher the previous year, but it was the re-release I seem to remember more.

99 SHOLA AMA - IMAGINE
Image
Reached #24 [April]

Shane is low placing Shola song shocker! Not one of my favourites of hers, not even one of the better songs from this album, I don't think it should've been a single, still prefer it to all the rubbish baseline remixes that keep cropping up.

98 JAY-Z - ANYTHING
Image
Reached #18 [February]

Love the sample on this song, is it wrong that Oliver is one of my favourite films? It was definitely a Hard Knocked Life part II, tried and tested method that worked for me!

97 LOST WITNESS - 7 COLOURS
Image
Reached #28 [December]

Another great vocal trance track from Lost Witness, I remember this being played quite a lot on the Kiss TV Channel.

96 MELANIE B - TELL ME
Image
Reached #4 [August]

This was the last of what I would call Mel's "fierce" singles, she went a bit lighter after this track, it was gritty and funky..sounds a bit dated now though.

Moby is great but I didn't like it at the time, I was very pop orientated in 2000!

Mel B, Jay-Z, Lost Witness all good. Wasn't keen on that Shola one.

95 JUNIOR JACK - MY FEELING
Image
Reached #31 [December]

Some great Italian house now from Junior Jack with first UK hit, "My Feeling", this to me was like an early Room 5 "Make Luv", nice vocal, catchy house beat.

94 LONYO - SUMMER OF LOVE
Image
Reached #8 [July]

Quite an unusual track this one I thought, standard Garage beat with an average vocal from Lonyo, but it was the female part of the track, giving the song a salsa-esque feel that made the track what it was.

93 SASH! - ADELANTE
Image
Reached #2 [February]

Bad luck for Sash! as this became his 5th single to reach #2 in the UK, still not making that chart topper, but considering this was the first release from his third album his popularity was still quite apparent for a dance act. I think I like this one more now than I did at the time, it's got a great atmospheric feel to it.

92 TRU FAITH & DUB CONSPIRACY - FREAK LIKE ME
Image
Reached #12 [September]

I was already familiar with this track by Adina Howard, but I liked the new spin on it, it wasn't as cheesy as other songs that have been remade into Garage or Dubstep covers, I loved the main production of the track.

91 WOOKIE - BATTLE
Image
Reached #10 [August]

One of the big emerging garage acts of the year was producer, Jason "Wookie" Chue. This was a bit of a surprise top 10 hit, and was followed with other great tracks, "Back Up (To Me"), "What's Going On?" and "Get Enuff". It didn't really pan out from this though, but he's still releasing music today.

Highlights so far:

Moby (his best song!)
Shola Ama (apparently there was a problem with the release which is why it's so low)
Lost Witness (the way trance should be done)
Mel B (loved it back then, I just loved how R&B sounded back then, so fierce)
Junior Jack (generic but pretty uplifting tune)
Lonyo (great summery track)
Sash! (one of the best dance acts of all time, this was a great song - although With My Own Eyes is far better imo)

I used to love Sash! He looked like a cheesy pornstar but he never made a bad hit!

Wookie and Lonyo were also pretty decent.

90 LYNDEN DAVID HALL FT.HINDA HICKS - LET'S DO IT AGAIN
Image
Reached #69 [September]

The final of 3 singles from Lynden in 2000 and my favourite, probably because it featured one of my favourites, Hinda Hicks on the remix, though I loved Lynden's voice too, really soulful.

89 TQ - DAILY
Image
Reached #14 [April]

TQ's comeback single, though the only release from his second album, despite being a top 15 hit. TQ made it by talking in a soulful way, for me it wasn't rapping and it wasn't singing, it somehow fitted somewhere inbetween.

88 MJ COLE - HOLD ON TO ME
Image
Reached #35 [December]

MJ Cole and vocalist Elisabeth Troy had a successful 2000 turning R&B into 2 Step, happily gliding along with the success of UK Garage. This was a beautiful song, showing that 2 Step doesn't necessarily have to be for the clubs.

87 NEW VISION - (JUST) ME AND YOU
Image
Reached #23 [January]

Another slick piece of vocal house, continuing it's popularity into the new millennium. It was future hit maker, Lee Cabrera behind this track which was another big holiday anthem.

86 MACY GRAY - WHY DIDN'T YOU CALL ME?
Image
Reached #38 [August]

I think anyone who's been involved in the whole dating game has can feel some relevance in this song. Macy seems to make it fun and cheeky though!

Lonyo, he was so boring! The song was alright though.

Junior Jack and Sash! both awesome dance tunes, I didn't like "Adelante" as much then as I do now though.

Tru Faith is a brilliant version, wasn't it Imaani of Eurovision fame on vocals/in the video? Also loved Wookie, it really grew on me slowly that summer.

85 SISQO - INCOMPLETE
Image
Reached #13 [December]

Sisqo's only single to top my personal chart, it was of course the Stargate remix of this that did it for me.. the original was a typical dreary R&B ballad....remixed was very nice!

84 BEATCHUGGERS FT.ERIC CLAPTON - FOREVER MAN (HOW MANY TIMES?)
Image
Reached #26 [November]

This is one of those songs that periodically get stuck in my head for no apparent reason...it's constantly playing in the background in my head.. the sample came from Eric Clapton's "Forever Man", a minor hit from 1985.

83 ARCHITECHS - BODY GROOVE
Image
Reached #3 [October]

Another popular 2 Step track that couldn't be shifted towards the end of 2000. One hit wonders, the follow up "Show Me The Money" did little, and vocalist, Nana has featured on nothing of importance since.

82 ODB FT.KELIS - GOT YOUR MONEY
Image
Reached #11 [July]

Probably Ol Dirty B*stard's most memorable hit, originally due out at the end of 1999 it was the first time we'd heard Kelis, but it was Summer 2000 by the time it finally got its full UK release.

81 HONEYZ - WON'T TAKE IT LYING DOWN
Image
Reached #7 [March]

Honeyz wen't feisty for the first time with this one, I remember in an interview that said they were disappointed the song hadn't reached top 5. They had really gone all out with this release but it failed to really do much and became their last notable hit.

Sisqo and Beat Chuggers OK, Architechs brilliant, ODB AMAZING song and beat, Honeyz also brilliant and should've been their first #1 but they were victims to distribution problems that seemed to hit a few acts in early 2000.

80 RONI SIZE - WHO TOLD YOU?
Image
Reached #17 [October]

The biggest hit scored by Mercury Prize winner, Roni Size, big beats and aggressive shouting made this song so exciting!

79 ARTFUL DODGER FT.ROMINA JOHNSON - MOVIN' TOO FAST
Image
Reached #2 [March]

Artful Dodger were leading the way in 2 Step and UK Garage in 2000, this song was a much nicer little track than "Rewind", very cute!

78 Q-TIP - BREATHE & STOP
Image
Reached #12 [February]

I always found it odd this was such a big commercial hit, because there was really no melody, but the addictive production and Q-Tip's distinctive voice made it a club classic.

77 SWEET FEMALE ATTITUDE - FLOWERS
Image
Reached #2 [April]

I was so glad when this became a big chart hit because it was such a stunning little track.. I love to listen to this one every now and again because it's one of those songs I just seem to forget about and then it brings back some great memories!

76 CHRISTINA AGUILERA - I TURN TO YOU
Image
Reached #19 [July]

This was the first time Christina really showed us what she could do as a vocalist, seemed a weird time of year to release a song like this though. A bit Disney, a bit cheesy, but very well sung.

Roni Size & Artful Dodger both not typically my thing but I like them both.

Sweet Female Attitude brings back memories for me too.. always happy to hear that when I'm out and about....

Really decent Christina song too.

75 BLINK 182 - ALL THE SMALL THINGS
Image
Reached #2 [March]

This cheeky rock classic was kept from the top by Geri Halliwell in the Spring. They're far from one of my favourite rock acts, but this is a song I can't help but enjoy.

74 MOLOKO - THE TIME IS NOW
Image
Reached #2 [April]

And this one was kept off the top by another Spice Girl the following week, this time Sporty. This sounds like a really classic disco track, great use of strings, I have absolutely no idea why, but whenever I hear this song I think of the scene from the film Annie where they go to the movies. Probably because I first thought the lyric was something about "the movies" rather than "the moment".

73 GLAMMA KID - BILLS 2 PAY
Image
Reached #17 [September]

The final single from Glamma, as usual stealing a sample, this time it came from Blondie's "Rapture". I liked it, sounds cheesy as hell now though. I guess by this point Glamma Kid had lost any credibility he may have once had as a Reggae artist.

72 LULU - WHERE THE POOR BOYS DANCE
Image
Reached #24[March]

And maybe this is where I lose any credibility as a music fan! This had staying power though, only dropping one place in its second week, very unusual back then for a song which missed the top 20.. I just remember my Dad recording the song off the radio one morning and playing it on repeat and I made out I hated it, but it really got stuck in my head!

71 MOS DEF - MS FAT BOOTY
Image
Reached #64 [November]

Back then, no R&B release could get by without me noticing it, and this song was totally my era when I loved it all. Fantastic hook on this track!

Love SFA they were far too short-lived! Not my favourite Christina song but good all the same. Artful Dodger cool and still sounds good today.

Love Blink 182, easily their best track. Moloko is awesome, such a brooding song - the video was never off MTV at the time and I was really pleased it broke through as a hit. I thought that Glamma Kid one was gonna be huge, loved it at the time.

Blink 182 is really good - I've liked it more as time has gone on. Moloko song is brilliant though - considering I hated "Sing It Back" - this song went some way to turn my opinion of them around.
