I can't actually believe I left 2001 so late, because this was a great year for me. It was the year I left school, the year I went and did my work experience at MTV and got a really good inside view of the music industry and the year I started media at college, and spent much of my £20 a week on the canteen video juke box!

I was very much into my R&B still, as Missy Elliott released the album of the year, sadly Aaliyah passed away and other girls like Mya, Blu Cantrell, Mary J Blige and J-Lo were cropping up.

Dance music was still there for me too, and Garage music came to a grand finale with the So Solid Crew, Mis-Teeq and Ms Dynamite first appearing in the UK chart.

1997 The Verve - Lucky Man
1998 The Corrs - What Can I Do?
1999 Foxy Brown - Hot Spot
2000 Mary Mary - Shackles (Praise You)
2001 ?? - ??
2002 Beverley Knight - Gold
2003 D Kay & Epsilon ft.Stamina MC - Barcelona
2004 Kelis ft.Andre 3000 - Millionaire
2006 Keisha White - The Weakness In Me
2007 T2 ft.Jodie Aysha - Heartbroken
2008 The Futureheads - The Beginning Of The Twist
2009 Calvin Harris - I'm Not Alone
2010 Shakira - Waka Waka

On The Way...?

Wigsnatchers ready?? Then we shall begin!

100 SISQO - DANCE FOR ME
Image
Reached #6 [July]

The lead single from Sisqo's second album, I remember at the time a lot of people were saying it was too similar to the work on his first album, the opening line of the song was "So you think you can get away with the same thing again?....Yep".... well I dunno about that, I preferred the cancelled follow up "Can I Live?" but this was ok.

99 HI-GATE - GONNA WORK IT OUT
Image
Reached #25 [April]

The Judge Jules/Paul Masterson project "Hi-Gate" scored their final of 3 top 40 hits in the Spring of 2001 with "Gonna Work It Out", it takes a while to get going, but when the crazy baseline kicks in, it's totally worth the wait.

98 THE STREETS - HAS IT COME TO THIS?
Image
Reached #18 [October]

The lead single from The Streets and their biggest hit from the "Original Pirate Material" album, which didn't make the top 10 til 3 years later with the release of "Dry Your Eyes". I love the singles from the first album because they still have that sort of underground feel to them.

97 TYMES 4 - SHE GOT GAME
Image
Reached #40 [December]

A girlband that never really took off, though two of the vocalists went on to record vocals for dance songs I love, "I'm In Heaven" by Jason Nevins (my #18 of 2003) and "Movin' Too Fast" by Supafly Inc. (my #16 of 2006). This was better than their debut single "Body Rock" but sounds really dated now.

96 LINA - PLAYA NO MORE
Image
Reached #46 [March]

I first heard this song in the Summer of 2000 when Trevor Nelson featured it on his weekly show as his "Urban Alternative", a song that wasn't quite R&B but was slightly left of field. This one had 1920's horns and a strange almost operatic voice, very unusual, but very cool!

I remember Tymes 4. Their debut was catchier but this was okay. They didn't have anything on Mis-Teeq.

The Streets - good track too 8-)

Sisqo alright, but another attempt at "Thong Song" really.
One of the best offerings from The Streets.
Tymes 4 were very cheap, never really liked them.

Fantastic year though, gonna be some bangers to come!

95 AMIRA - MY DESIRE
Image
Reached #20 [February]

Here's a song they repeatedly tried to make a hit, with 3 separate releases, it finally scored it's peak with the 2001 re-releases and a bunch of new remixes, I guess the popularity of Garage at the time had a big hand in it. I'm not convinced it's the last we've seen of this song still! I'm waiting for a chavvy Baseline releases like they did with Kristine Blonde.

94 DIDO - HERE WITH ME
Image
Reached #4 [February]

I think I've made my feelings on Dido quite clear on UKMix over the years, it's not that I find her at all offensive, rather ridiculously inoffensive. Saying that, I have a little soft spot for this song because of it's perfectly timed use in one of my favourite films, Love Actually.

93 MYSTIKAL FT.NIVEA - DANGER (BEEN SO LONG)
Image
Reached #28 [March]

An introduction to Nivea and a very familiar song by Mystikal, it was pretty much a remake of previous hit, Shake Ya Ass. This song holds his highest UK peak. I love the way Mystikal opts to bark rather than rap, in a DMX-sort of way.

92 SELENA VS.X-MEN - GIVE IT UP
Image
Reached #61 [July]

This is a song I only really discovered more recently. Typical 2step sound trying to appeal to a more mass market in the same way De Nada and Ladies First have managed to score top 20 hits, I guess there's not room for everyone though, and this one skipped by unnoticed, despite the fact that Garage success story, Wookie was the brains behind X.Men.

91 NIKKA COSTA - LIKE A FEATHER
Image
Reached #53 [August]

Long before Nero, we had another coffee themed act, Nikka Costa. MTV Hammered this video, describing her as a much required female version of Lenny Kravitz. The production on this track is funky as hell.

Amira is great!
Dido's best song arguably.
That Nikka Costa video was everywhere, so surprised when it flopped!

Nikka Costa + Dido = thumbs up. Here With Me is the only Dido song I like and yes, perfectly used in Love Actually!
Let's embrace the point of no return.

Here With Me is not my favorite song of Dido, but without any doubt No Angel is her best album.

90 DR DRE FT.SNOOP DOGG - THE NEXT EPISODE
Image
Reached #3 [February]

One of my favourite Dr Dre singles, which was later sampled in the same year by City High (who don't appear in my top 100).

89 FRAGMA - YOU ARE ALIVE
Image
Reached #4 [May]

This song sounds so cheesy now, it's weird to think how you can listen to a song in a totally different way at different times. Back then I thought this song was so exciting and uplifting.

88 NATALIA IMBRUGLIA - THAT DAY
Image
Reached #11 [November]

Back then Natalie's comeback seemed like such a long wait that some seemed disappointed that this song was a bit more indie and almost disorientated, perhaps expecting another Torn. I wasn't that fussed on it at first, but it grew on me later.

87 WEEKEND PLAYERS - 21ST CENTURY
Image
Reached #22 [September]

Another one that didn't do much for me at first was this one, it definitely had its fans, but I saw it as a bit too much like Everything But The Girl, who I'd always thought of as a bit bland. But again it grew on me, I do enjoy a song with a good "do do do" in it.

86 LIBERTY - THINKING IT OVER
Image
Reached #5 [October]

Liberty, as they then were, slid into the charts just as Hear'say were all but ever and proved to be the far more successful act to come from the original Popstars TV show. They also spelled the end of Garage music, it was really now too obvious that it was no longer cool to do 2step.

Dr Dre was pretty good, though I preferred the other single releases. Awesome album though.

Decent song from Fragma too.

Great Dr. Dre track though I preferred the City High song overall.
Fragma I hadn't heard for years until the other week, always a pleasure!
Natalie Imbruglia was a disappointment to me at the time but I love it now.
Weekend Players a nice little ditty.
Liberty I really liked at the time but I find it pretty ropey these days!

85 EMILIANA TORRINI - TO BE FREE
Image
Reached #44 [February]

I'd expected this one to do a little better than it did, although her most successful UK single, still not top 40. It had a sort of commercial Bjork feel to it.

84 JA RULE FT.CHRISTINA MILIAN - BETWEEN ME AND YOU
Image
Reached #26 [March]

Before he introduced Ashanti to us on "Always On Time", Ja gave us Christina Milian on this, his first UK hit, "Between Me And You", with a typical Murder Inc, simple piano production.

83 STROKES - HARD TO EXPLAIN
Image
Reached #16 [July]

One of my favourite rock acts now, and their debut single "Hard to Explain". They really brought back that old skool electro-rock 80's sound, a winning formula that they stuck to ever since. I love the way this song stops and starts.

82 3LW - NO MORE
Image
Reached #6 [June]

The debut single for short-lived girlgroup, 3LW. I actually preferred the Trackmasters remix featuring Nas which I'd heard quite a lot in 2000, as it was a lot more funky, but this was still nice.

81 WOOKIE - BACK UP (TO ME)
Image
Reached #38 [May]

Sticking to the previous years formula of featuring Lain on "Battle", this time Wookie was back with this song which topped my personal chart at the time. It was a bit more melodic than "Battle", I thought it could've been more successful than it was.
