100 Reasons I Love 2005 [COMPLETE]

This is the last year I have to do, and I think the reason I've left it til last is because it really wasn't the best year for me musically. Saying that, there were half a dozen really exceptional tracks, some hot new R&B artists were emerging and with the increasing popularity of looped house and the fact I was heading out most weekends, means there will be a handful of dance anthems pretty high up here.

1997 The Verve - Lucky Man
1998 The Corrs - What Can I Do?
1999 Foxy Brown - Hot Spot
2000 Mary Mary - Shackles (Praise You)
2001 MOP ft.Busta Rhymes - Ante Up
2002 Beverley Knight - Gold
2003 D Kay & Epsilon ft.Stamina MC - Barcelona
2004 Kelis ft.Andre 3000 - Millionaire
2005 ?? - ??
2006 Keisha White - The Weakness In Me
2007 T2 ft.Jodie Aysha - Heartbroken
2008 The Futureheads - The Beginning Of The Twist
2009 Calvin Harris - I'm Not Alone
2010 Shakira - Waka Waka

On The Way...?

Special shout out to one of my favourite songs from this year
Kano feat.Katie Pearl - Nobody Don't Dance No More

However as usual, this list will only feature songs that made the UK official chart.

100 TYLER JAMES - FOOLISH
Image
Reached #16 [March]

Although his most successful single, it's probably my least favourite. Still a nice little pop song not a million miles away from the stuff Olly Murs has been coming out with more recently.

99 DESTINYS CHILD - GIRL
Image
Reached #6 [May]

It was a bit like ending on a fizzle rather than a bang, but this was the final single from Destinys Child, since the 2 that were due to follow it were both cancelled in the UK. Nice song but they've done much better.

98 TWEET FT.MISSY ELLIOTT - TURN DA LIGHTS OFF
Image
Reached #29 [March]

Hoping to recapture the success of Oops, this was the lead single from Tweet's second album. She has a sweet voice but this was never going to be massive.

97 FREELOADERS - SO MUCH LOVE TO GIVE
Image
Reached #9 [April]

One of the big looped house hits of the year, this one used a direct sample from the Real Thing's 70's track of the same name. Quite repetitive, easy to listen to kinda dance.

96 WILL SMITH - SWITCH
Image
Reached #4 [April]

Just when everyone thought Will Smith was done music wise, he came back with a track that kept climbing and spent 8 weeks inside the top 10. Catchy as hell.

Quite liked the Freeloaders one - got well overplayed by radio 1 though and never became the massive smash I expected it to be.

Nice to see "Girl", but as you said yourself, the group has had much better songs.

95 SUGABABES - PUSH THE BUTTON
Image
Reached #1 [October]

At the time this went to become the Sugababes biggest hit, spending 3 weeks at the top, it also climbed back into the top 20 the week after it fell out the chart, though I forget why this was, possibly just as a result of the Christmas stuff disappearing. I loved this at the time, but it sounds quite dated now.

94 THE MAGIC NUMBERS - FOREVER LOST
Image
Reached #15 [June]

Not a song that I got particularly into at the time, but it's always been there just in the radar as the only Magic Numbers song I'm really that familiar with. Nice enough.

93 UNITING NATIONS - YOU AND ME
Image
Reached #15 [August]

Following the massive success of "Out Of Touch" it took them 8 months to get out a near enough replica of the track...I do privately quite enjoy the follow up "Ai No Corrida" too, but to try and keep some dignity, I've not included it in this list.

92 JOHN LEGEND - USED TO LOVE U
Image
Reached #29 [March]

The debut UK single for the voice that is, John Legend. This was quite a strange choice for me, as it's not really that distinctive or demonstrating of his talent.

91 JAMIE SCOTT - SEARCHING
Image
Reached #33 [January]

There is no denying this guy's talented, but he's struggled to have that real breakthrough hit, whether as a solo artist, as Jamie Scott & The Town, or his new group, Grafitti6. This is still my favourite of his though.

Sugababes good. Didn't like it much at the time, but I do now. Funnily enough, it's their biggest hit here (got to #3 or #5 from memory). Thumbs down for that cruddy Will Smith song.
Let's embrace the point of no return.

90 DAFT PUNK - ROBOT ROCK
Image
Reached #32 [April]

I think a track that was always destined to provide the soundtrack for adverts, TV shows etc. This had an unmistakable riff which sounds like it would've fitted right into The O-Zone or Newsround.

89 U2 - SOMETIMES YOU CAN'T MAKE IT ON YOUR OWN
Image
Reached #1 [February]

There's not much in the last decade I've really liked by U2, but I did enjoy this track. I think it was a modern take on the sort of rock ballad that used to provoke certain emotions, such as in REM's "Everybody Hurts" or U2's own "With or Without You".

88 DESTINYS CHILD FT.T.I & LIL WAYNE - SOLDIER
Image
Reached #4 [February]

This was a really interesting choice of single for me. It was the roughest, most unpolished thing they'd released since 1999's "Get On The Bus", a real raw hip hop feel to it, which still managed to transfer into a successful hit.

87 THE FUTUREHEADS - THE HOUNDS OF LOVE
Image
Reached #8 [March]

The Futureheads were a band struggling to get that breakthrough hit, until they finally released the fourth single from their debut album. To be honest, it was only later when I got into their 2008 single "The Beginning of The Twist", that I retraced back to this, honestly I wasn't even familiar with the Kate Bush original.

86 BRANDY - WHO IS SHE 2 U
Image
Reached #50 [April]

I found this a bit slow on the album, actually I've said before I was really disappointed with this album as a whole. But for a single release, the track was remixed and given new energy by Josh Harris.

I hate "Soldier", one of the worst of DC songs in my opinion. But I'm really happy to see "Push The Button", great song.

85 DEEP DISH - SAY HELLO
Image
Reached #14 [July]

I got into this one a bit later than it's release. It's kinda dreamy and suits being more of a chillout track over a club hit.

84 MOBY - LIFT ME UP
Image
Reached #18 [March]

I like that Moby avoids current trends and sticks to the sort of music he wants to make. This was a really stormy sounding track, really dramatic and almost tribal.

83 LNM PROJEKT FT.BONNIE BAILEY - EVERYWHERE
Image
Reached #38 [March]

Another looped house track, this one sampling Fleetwood Mac's late 80s top 5 hit "Everywhere". Cute song, again not really a club track, but nice enough to listen to at home.

82 THE FADERS - NO SLEEP TONIGHT
Image
Reached #13 [April]

Liked this when it came out, they seemed to have some genuine edge to them when this track came out, a really great heavy baseline to the track, it was kinda lost when their follow up "Jump" was a much more pop sound. Got back into this when it was used in the soundtrack to My Super Ex-Girlfriend.

81 GWEN STEFANI FT.EVE - RICH GIRL
Image
Reached #4 [March]

A fun song for the girls, Eve returning the favour from her own biggest hit, "Let Me Blow Ya Mind". Loved her rap in this track.

I really liked the Uniting Nations follow up replica track.

Don't mind Futureheads cover either. The U2 song is one of the best they have done. I have seen some amazing live performances of that song.

Quite like Deep Dish, preferred "Flashdance" though. Decent Moby track too.
