It seems only yesterday that I was counting down my top 100 songs of 2010, but yet again another year has rolled by, I got more wrinkles on my face and more grey hairs, but hopefully I've still managed to stay in touch with what's COOL in music

This year I've decided to go back to what I did before, basing my top 100 of the year on chart performance in my personal chart...so that a #1 position is worth 50 points, where as a #50 position is worth 1. However with another 4 weeks of charts to calculate the final result (and I'm pretty shocked myself by the result so far!) I will start by doing a month by month review of the year.

You had great taste in 1997!

I think your taste in dance music in particular is second to none on here. Looking at the past charts: Southside Spinners, David Morales, Layo & Bushwacka, Plummet, Jupiter Ace, Red Carpet, Chris Lake, Bodyrox, Mason vs.Princess Superstar, Calvin Harris, Afrojack & David Guetta - some serious anthems there!

Hope this years rundown continues the trend!

JANUARY

New Years eve was a weird one for me this year, I remember going home angry, waking up hung over the next day and thinking, pffftttt ‘ere we go again for another year then!

My first chart of the year began with Jazmine Sullivan kicking off with a new entry at the top, new year, new me, new #1, “Good Enough” was a fitting track really to start a new year, an empowering anthem, about moving on and not caring, if you’re not “Good Enough”

Image

Although the album was released at the end of 2010, it was one of my soundtracks to the year, and I think, better than any album released in 2011. In the same week she was also in my top 10 with the lead single “Holding You Down (Goin’ In Circles).
As the year progressed it became obvious to me that it was gonna be another great year for R&B music as it blended into my other favourite genre, dance, other favourites included Pitbull’s “Hey Baby” and Alexis Jordan “Good Girl”.
There was still some room for pop and rock in my life though, as The Wombats continued to be one of my favourite bands, they reached #9 with “Jump Into The Fog”, while Avril Lavigne scored her first chart topper in my personal chart since 2004’s “Nobody’s Home”, “What The Hell” also finished as my most played song of the year.

Image
Another genre started to creep back in this year too, mostly lead by Yasmin, the trip hop sound really started to show some promise, Yasmin managed to peak as high as #6 with lead single “On My Own”, while the slightly heavier drum and bass sounds of Chase & Status hit the top 5 with “Blind Faith”, it was clear this was a sound going to be borrowed for pop acts this year too as Black Eyed Peas scored a #1 with “Just Can’t Get Enough”, leading a very mixed R&B top 3, ahead of the Caribbean influenced “Man Down” (Rihanna) and dance/pop sound of “On The Floor” (Jennifer Lopez)

January #1s
W1: Jazmine Sullivan – Good Enough
W2: Jazmine Sullivan – Good Enough
W3: Avril Lavigne – What The Hell
W4: Rihanna – Man Down
W5: Black Eyed Peas – Just Can’t Get Enough

Other hits in January in my chart included Ciara’s “Turn It Up”, Nicki Minaj’s “Muny”, Rihanna’s “S&M” and Jessie J’s “Price Tag”.

Surprised you like that Avril track so much it was your most played! Loads of good picks here though, the Jazmine album as a whole and the inclusion of the Wombats being my highlights!

I've been fully loving The Wombats this year! Their album is one of my favourites this year!

Also Jazmine's album fully grew on me, from being disappointed at first. Still not a patch on her classic debut IMO!.

I love 'What The Hell' too, quite surprised you love it also!

FEBRUARY

Cool times in February, as king_oxymoron, steophonic, Thombus, Thriller and Plym all came to stay at my flat for a weekend, where I caused all manor of drama, pushing women out of fire escapes, throwing pints over Adam and trying to find something to cook 6 people with entirely different tastes! But when we get together I think we all usually discover something new in music or gain some love for one track or another.

The month started off with a new #1 in my chart, Flo Rida's "Who Dat Girl?" which I was sure was going to be a massive hit, it never was, though it gave him a second big #1 hit on my chart, following 2009's "Sugar", though he would make it a third by the end of the year.

Image

2 of my favourite acts made comeback splashes in February. While Nicki Minaj has been one of my favourite acts of the year, I still thoroughly enjoyed Lil Kim's Nicki diss track "Black Friday" which peaked at #2, while a kick ass video and catchy chorus helped Lady GaGa score her only chart topper this year with "Born This Way", becoming her fourth over all, following "Bad Romance" "Telephone" and "Alejandro".

Image

A huge chart topper from November 2010, "Monster" by KanYe West just wouldn't shift out of my chart and by its 20th week it was still as high as #7, the song went on to spend more than half a year in my top 50.

February was completed by DJ Tiesto, an act who had scored many hits in my charts over the years, but never quite reached the top 5 before, this time, he turned his mostly instrumental "C'Mon" into a Busta Rhymes rapping frenzy of a track "C'Mon (Catch Em By Surprise)", by it's 5th week it gave him a first #1, and Busta's first since 2006's "This Is How We Do It Over Here", the song eventually went on to spend 3 weeks at #1.

Image

February #1s
W6 Flo Rida ft.Akon - Who Dat Girl?
W7 Flo Rida ft.Akon - Who Dat Girl?
W8 Lady GaGa - Born This Way
W9 Tiesto vs.Diplo ft.Busta Rhymes - C'Mon (Catch Em By Surprise)

Other hits in February include Shakira's "Rabiosa", Fabolous "You Be Killin Em", Groove Armada's "Time & Space" and Greg Parys "Why Don't We Just F***"

MARCH

In March I remember doing a lot of clubbing, where I met a new group of friends that I became quite close to in this period, so I was going out quite a lot to get to know them a bit better. That's really the only thing of much influence I can remember from March..

It started off with the second single from Jodie Connor, making an immediate climb to the top. After her first single "Now Or Never" had been a minor hit on my chart, I was far more impressed by her follow up, "Bring It", featuring Tinchy Stryder, she returned the favour from featuring on his "In My System", a top 10 hit in my chart last year. Sadly she's yet to release any follow up to this yet.

Image

While Adele had been blowing up in everyones charts in early 2011, it wasn't until March that she achieved a top 10 hit in mine, both her cover of Cheryl Cole's "Promise This" and "Set Fire To The Rain" made my top 10 in March at #7 and #8 respectively. It seemed quite a month for artists appearing twice in my top 10, as Pitbull peaked at #4 with "Give Me Everything", he also featured on Jennifer Lopez's big comeback single "On The Floor" which reached #2. Kelly Rowland also featured on 2 top 10 dance hits, Alex Gaudino's "What A Feeling" (#5), and Rune RK's "Free Fall" (#10), though the latter eventually peaked at #2 at the end of May. Finally, Dev also managed to peak at #9 in March with both "Bass Down Low" and "In The Dark"

Image

Finally, after the initial success of Yasmin's debut single "On My Own", she followed Jodie Connor's footsteps by coming back even stronger and showing the UK still had some girl power as the Freemasons remix of "Finish Line" became the first song to debut at #1 since Jazmine Sullivan managed it with "Good Enough" in week 1.

Image

March #1s
W10 Jodie Connor ft.Tinchy Stryder - Bring It
W11 Tiesto vs.Diplo ft.Busta Rhymes - C'Mon (Catch Em By Surprise)
W12 Tiesto vs.Diplo ft.Busta Rhymes - C'Mon (Catch Em By Surprise)
W13 Yasmin - Finish Line (Freemasons Remix)

Other hits in March include Rebecca Black's "Friday", Erick Morillo's "Live Your Life", Olav Basoski's "New Day" and Paul Morrell's "Give Me Love".

Yes, great weekend in February, enjoyed it muchly - great music too, remembered for Alexis Jordan mainly but I also got a new found appreciation of the original mix of Cassius when I had overplayed the Scream remix to death by that point.

J-Lo was huge at the start of the year - pretty much dominated this period for me. Quite liked "Finish Line", "Give Me Love" "Live Your Life" and still loving Tiesto/Diplo around this point.

APRIL

April was a great battle between 2 huge dance singles all month, LMFAO had previously had some success in my chart with songs "LaLa" "Yes" and "Shots", but it was "Party Rock Anthem" that really kicked it off for them for me, it had me trying to master the shuffle and cutting into many feet and shins while attempting it in clubs. I was showing the video off to everyone and it became my longest running #1 of the year with 4 weeks. the longest since last years "Waka Waka" (My favourite of 2010).

Image

Can't remember exactly what was going on in my life in April, but it did lead Thriller to at one point state "I think Shane's shuffled off UKMix!". The song being kept at #2 all month was an act who previously appeared with LMFAO on "No Getting Over", David Guetta brought out the big guns, Flo Rida and Nicki Minaj for one of the most addictive tracks of the year, "Where Them Girls At?" which sat 3 weeks behind LMFAO at #2.

Image

2 of the longest runners in my chart in 2011 peaked in April too, with Kelly Rowland managing to reach as high as #4 with "Motivation", due to the "Ill Factor & Linney" remix getting my attention, after a shaky start, the song eventually spent 21 weeks inside my top 50. Also after no success with her first couple of singles in my chart, Clare Maguire went as high as #3 in April with "The Shield and The Sword", a song that would spend 19 weeks inside my chart.

Image

April #1s
W14 Yasmin - Finish Line (Freemasons Remix)
W15 LMFAO - Party Rock Anthem
W16 LMFAO - Party Rock Anthem
W17 LMFAO - Party Rock Anthem

Other hits in April include "Top Of The World" from The Cataracs, Alexis Jordan's "Hush Hush" and 2 more songs that wouldn't shift all year, Devlin's "Runaway" and KanYe Wests "All Of The Lights".
