I just had to. Could not resist any longer. This is my new UKmix project. Man, this was not an easy decision. Their catalogue is vast. I'm a long-time fan and I'm still discovering, still not done after all these years. There are about 270 distinct songs. ...and then there are the different versions, extended versions, mixes, dubs. So many!! At the moment, I have 358 PSB tracks in my music collection BUT I KNOW that there are MORE THAN 600 out there. I have to restrain, retain, hold back, but I can't. Doing the Björk countdown was easier, much. But yeah, let's do this. Maybe this will never actually happen but my intentions were sincere. Coming soon...

To rank songs I compare each with each song because I believe this is the most intuitive way to do it. 36,856 comparisons, maybe a few less because I already think of an abbreviation. Expect the countdown to start somewhere in 1-4 months.

I'm counting down the top #100-#1 and, alongside that, I also reveal #200-#101.
To make things easier for you, I state which era each song belongs to. I decided to count music from the "Closer to Heaven" musical to the Nighlife era. I categorized songs into these eras:

Please, Please further listening (1984-1986)
Actually, Actually further listening (1987-1988)
Introspective, Introspective further listening (1988-1989)
Behaviour, Behaviour further listening (1990-1992)
Very, Very further listening (1993-1995)
Bilingual, Bilingual further listening (1996-1998)
Nightlife, Nightlife further listening (1999-2001)
Release, Release further listening (2002-2005)
Battleship Potemkin (2005)
Fundamental, Fundamental further listening (2006-2008)
Yes, Yes further listening (2009-2011)
The Most Incredible Thing (2011)
Elysium, Elysium further listening (2012)

From now on, I use the abbreviation fl (stands for "further listening") for material not included on the album.

Before we start, here are #285-#201.

#285-#201
#285 Wings and Faith Yes fl, #284 The Dumpling Song Yes fl, #283 Opportunities (Reprise) Please, #282 Particle Fundamental fl, #281 Party Song Fundamental fl, #280 The Miracle - Ceremony The Most Incredible Thing, #279 K-Hole Nightlife fl, #278 The Miracle - Colour and Light The Most Incredible Thing, #277 The Sound of the Atom Splitting Introspective fl, #276 The Miracle - Resurrection The Most Incredible Thing, #275 Black Sun Bilingual fl, #274 The Miracle - Revolution The Most Incredible Thing, #273 Our Daily Bread Battleship Potemkin, #272 The Miracle - The Meeting (reprise) The Most Incredible Thing, #271 Generic Gingle Behaviour fl, #270 Numb Fundamental, #269 Disco Potential Bilingual fl, #268 Gin and Jag Yes fl, #267 Overture to "Performance" Behaviour fl, #266 Nyet Battleship Potemkin, #265 No Time for Tears Battleship Potemkin, #264 If Love Were All Very fl, #263 Love Life Release fl, #262 Night Song Yes fl, #261 Break 4 Love Release fl, #260 Transfer Fundamental fl, #259 Searching for the Face of Jesus Release fl, #258 Night Falls Battleship Potemkin, #257 Sexy Northerner Release fl, #256 If Looks Could Kill Release fl, #255 The Ghost of Myself Nightlife fl, #254 Bubadubadubadum (All My Wasted Time) Please fl, #253 Beautiful People Yes, #252 Euroboy Very fl, #251 We're All Criminals Now Yes fl, #250 I Made My Excuses and Left Fundamental, #249 The Clock 1/2/3 The Most Incredible Thing, #248 Love Is a Catastrophe Release, #247 We're the Pet Shop Boys Release fl, #246 Decadence Very fl, #245 Everything Means Something Elysium, #244 The Clock 7/8/9 The Most Incredible Thing, #243 Always Nightlife fl, #242 Indefinite Leave to Remain Fundamental, #241 Together Yes fl, #240 God Willing Fundamental, #239 Later Tonight Please, #238 The Former Enfant Terrible Yes fl, #237 Hey, Headmaster Very fl, #236 Psychological Fundamental, #235 Twentieth Century Fundamental, #234 Some Speculation Very fl, #233 Girls Don't Cry Fundamental fl, #232 The Clock 4/5/6 The Most Incredible Thing, #231 Legacy Yes, #230 For Freedom Battleship Potemkin, #229 Footsteps Nightlife, #228 Silver Age Nightlife fl, #227 Somebody Else's Business Release fl, #226 How I Learned to Hate Rock-and-Roll Bilingual fl, #225 Positive Role Model Nightlife fl, #224 Prologue The Most Incredible Thing, #223 Sail Away Nightlife fl, #222 Jack the Lad Please fl, #221 Blue on Blue Fundamental fl, #220 E-Mail Release, #219 Transparent Release fl, #218 Up and Down Yes fl, #217 Music for Boys Behaviour fl, #216 Casanova in Hell Fundamental, #215 Glad All Over Yes fl, #214 Saturday Night Forever Bilingual, #213 Electricity Bilingual, #212 I Get Along Release, #211 Drama in the Harbour Battleship Potemkin, #210 Your Funny Uncle Introspective fl, #209 Physical Jerks The Most Incredible Thing, #208 Bet She's Not Your Girlfriend Behaviour fl, #207 What Keeps Mankind Alive? Introspective fl, #206 You Choose Release, #205 She's Madonna Fundamental fl, #204 Nightlife Nightlife fl, #203 Delusions of Grandeur Bilingual fl, #202 Back to the Grind The Most Incredible Thing, #201 Vampires Nightlife.

Not much to say about that. These are the tracks I don't like. Numb, Beautiful People, Together and I Get Along were released as singles.
Some of them aren't fully fledged songs. The ranking is somewhat arbitrary down there, and I already regret putting Everything Means Something, Legacy and You Choose there.

That's great. I'll send you both a pm when I reached the top 30 (if you won't post here any sooner, that is). :D However, I enjoy the whole top 100 a lot, that's why I decided to start with #100.

#100 Yesterday, When I Was Mad Very 1993
released as 5th and last single from the Very album
#13 UK, #13 Australia, #35 Netherlands, #72 Germany on official charts
#55, #377, #432 on this week's last.fm artist chart

Yesterday, When I Was Mad (original video)

"'Darling, you were wonderful, you really were quite good
I enjoyed it, though, of course, no one understood
a word of what was going on, they didn't have a clue
They couldn't understand your sense of humour like I do
You have a certain quality which really is unique
Expressionless, such irony, although your voice is weak
It doesn't really matter 'cause the music is so loud
Of course it's all on tape but no one will find out'"

In this song, Neil rants about critics of their Performance tour (their first world tour, 1991). Critics did not like it because of the unusual stage settings, well, unusual for a pop/rock concert. Have a closer look at the lyrics, it's why I put this into the top 100. Neil will address his critics again in the 2012 album track Your Early Stuff. Surprisingly, the boys said there were influenced by progressive rock in the making of this song. The song features complex harmonies and switches between mid-tempo and fast, from C minor in the verses to C major in the chorus. The single version (video link above) is quite different, remixed by Jam & Spoon. They did a good job there.

I wrote this in the PSB thread some weeks ago:

Vindrag wrote:This is a fun track! Don't know about the video though  A hidden gem! So corny but so adorable.
Hearing it for a second time.. I already remembered the chorus and I think it's even better this time! I even got a tear in my eyes :-? It must be that PSB feeling I so often talk about - it's grand, melancholic, silly and danceable. A strange kind of euphoria! Plus... Neil is rapping!

PURCHASED FROM iTunes!! :D :D

This will be the follow up in my chart after You Are Always On My Mind and all the Elysium tracks. #100 Chun? Seriously? This is an amazing track. We'll see if it manages to debut on the lower part of the top 20 tomorrow, or if it will debut next week.

I know that I'm nagging.. but their music becomes so emotional to me... it's a bliss! I know which track I will blast on max volume when I return home and start to prepare for tonights wedding! :D

Yesterday When I Was Mad is so flexible! So much happening! The brass in the second verse, the second bridge. It's amazing! :D

The version I boguth from PopArt isn't the orignal? Damn! Well.. I usually prefer having the original versions of songs, but if the original isn't as good as this...?

Which one is on Popart? The single version? Yeah, the album version is different. I like the single version more, better intro!
You bought it instantly! :D That makes me a happy man. Yeah, the rapping and the lyrics make this song grand. The brass in 2nd verse is louder in the single version. As is the repeated staccato synth sound. I speak of the thing starting at 4:25 in this video: Jam & Spoon mix

Yepp! Immediate download! :D Thank you Chun!

On PopArt, it's 4:01 and sounds identic to the video version, what I can hear. OK! Both the brass and the staccato synth is important here, so I don't want to hear the album version until the time has come to purchase that particulart album!

Oh and if I never return here... it's because I've been banging to hard on the bike to work. BOOM! CRASH! :o :o

Your personal chart? Is it starting again? With the famous Swedish lessons?

It's only #100 since I overplayed it in the 90s and it's #100 because I love the lyrics. :x I like the whole 100, don't blame me for putting it too low.

Yes! I'm mad at you! But I'll get over it tomorrow!

Yes, my chart... I would love to start updating here again, but I simply don't have the time for it! :(

Overplaying a song 20 years ago is quite a long time though, but I understand! There's probably more material which is equally amazing which I haven't heard.

What an amazing start to your top 100! I hope that you'll update it slowly so I can be a part of it!

Showering and shaving is overrated. I didn't do it on Thursday and they still like me at work.

This is your version:
Mixer: Julian Mendelsohn and Pet Shop Boys ("with thanks to Jam & Spoon")
Single version (4:01)
Available on PopArt and on the Further Listening bonus disc with the Very reissue
Carfully drive to work!

Indeed and indeed. I like YWIWM much more now since you are so enthusiastic about it. And as promised, I'll countdown the 100 songs slowly, update every 3 days. I have to restrain myself a lot!!!
