That's one of the fields where white supremacy is really, really felt...So many people get hired to "teach" without a degree of any kind or any experience whatsoever. And it's not, as the apologists attempt to say, due to their being native speakers either. Putting aside whether native speakers are necessarily better teachers of the language, or whether native speakers even necessarily speak the language fluently (I know some who no longer speak their native language), we're not just talking about British and Americans getting hired, but personally I have met Italians, Germans, and Austrians "teaching" English as "native" speakers, even when their language is less than stellar. The only "quality" they have, quite literally, is being white.

I recently argued with an American online in an expat group, who was promoting for a position to "teach" English online, hiring only people from certain nationalities (which of course excluded the non-white countries that speak English as their first language, but included Canada, a country where only 51% of the population speak English as their first language). I pointed out the fact that that's discriminatory and in fact illegal according to both the Mexican constitution and the relevant Mexican law, and even stated that as an Oxford graduate with a British passport, a former school governor and a fellow of a royal society, who made more money part-time as an undergrad years ago than the top range he stated in his ad, I am personally not affected. Guess what? He just said I was "butthurt" and the clearly racist hiring practice was just "supply and demand", and he had no problem being complicit (and of course in fact actively promoting) in it.

It's things like that make me feel like I can't live in the United States. I've been all over the world and lived on four continents - and never the United States. But somehow all the actual racist attacks I have received have been from Americans who don't even know me personally.

i don't wanna say it's a wrong choice, but it's def not better than what i expected. I mean there is perspective to it, but I just see my choices as very limited atm and none of them are what I wanted to do with it.

Studying medicine.
