Daydream.
Franklin’s music profoundly touched and changed the world, because over and over it offered that bridge to salvation, to freedom.

Unlike other things that wither, she preserves. She’s a constant in a world of relentless flux. She’s a beacon of immortality. Bitch, she’s Madonna.

It's hard to say because the first era I truly experienced was Butterfly. An era isn't just about sales and chart peaks, so I can't use only that info to make a decision.

Looks, vocals, critically acclaimed album, sales (album, singles, tour - albeit very brief), image...

I'd say Daydream. She could do no wrong during this period.

She was popular throughout the 90s but I agree with others who single Daydream out, that was the era where she was inescapable. Even though she had countless #1 hits, that three-peat of Fantasy/One Sweet Day/Always Be My Baby kept her at the top of the charts pretty much that entire year of high school and her videos were never bigger on MTV than they were in 95-96.

Juries out for what his finest era was artistically, but commercially, Purple Rain was his true moment of megastardom.
