1968 was a tough year-- the death of Dr. King among the most serious reasons why. Vietnam and protests thereof began to dominate the political and music scenes in America (and, I have learned, in the UK as well).

The Moody Blues debut and take our first #1 of this year. The Stones also go top 10.

With this new year, as we head for a full circle around all 10 years of each decade, I am changing the retiring rules as we move into a second round.

A song that stays in the top 40 can stay on for up to 52 weeks, a full year, before being retired.

A song that is below #40 and has been on over 26 weeks (half a year) is retired

A song that is below #75 and has been on over 13 weeks (1/4 a year) is retired.
"And keep reaching for the stars...." Casey Kasem RIP 1932-2014

'Some Velvet Morning' is another Duet by Nancy Sinatra & Lee Hazlewood.
Many say that it is their best Duet together. It is certainly a very haunting
and peculiar song. There are references to Phaedra in various parts of both
singers lines. In Ancient Greek Mythology Phaedra was the daughter of King
Minos of Crete & his wife, Queen Pasiphae. I used to lie in bed trying to work
out what 'Some Velvet Morning' means, as a song. I never have worked it out.
Some say that it is some kind of 'warning' - from Lee to Nancy. The style of
music is so odd that someone gave it a name - 'Cowboy Psychedelia'.

'Love Is Blue' by French Orchestra Leader Paul Mauriat, was the USA No.1 Single, for 5 Weeks, in 1968. It was
really an instrumental version of 'L'amour Est Bleu', the 1967 Luxembourg Eurovision Song Contest entry, by
Greek Singer Vicky - Vicky Leandros. 'Puppet On A String' by the UK's Sandie Shaw, Won that Year. Vicky was 4th.
Vicky Leandros Won the 1972 ESC - again for Luxembourg - with 'Apres Toi'. 'Love Is Blue' is only one of 2 ESC
connected Songs to reach No.1 in the USA, The other was the 1958 Italian entry, 'Nel Blu Dipinto Di Blu', by
Domenico Modugno. The Title means 'In the Blue That Is Painted In Blue'. It did not Win the ESC. It was 3rd.
However, it became a huge Global Hit & it too spent 5 Weeks, at No.1, in the USA. It is also called 'Volare',
which means, 'To Fly'. So, the only 2 ESC connected Songs, to reach No.1, in the USA, had 3 things in common.
Neither actually Won the ESC, Both had 'Blue' in their Titles, & both spent 5 Weeks at No.1 there. The highest
Charting USA Hit, that actually Won the ESC, is still 'Waterloo' by ABBA - No.6, (Billboard Hot 100), in 1974,
