it was a monster album back in the day.. how just one little single can turnaround a career. Mariah was basically still unknown in Europe up to 1994 all she needed was one blockbuster single and that was Without You which even was her best selling single of her career worldwide up until 2007/8 when All I want for christmas took over.

Dreamlover:
The leadsingle and at that time something so different than we were used to by Mariah. Great mid-tempo. Great song!

Hero:
This was gonna be the albumtitle. Personally I'm glad it's changed into Music Box. Hero is a great ballad, building beautifully to the end. Love the lyrics. The live version with choir is the version I love most.

Anytime you need a friend:
This was instantly (and still is) my favorite song of the album. I really hoped it would become a single and although I had to wait long, it did become a single eventually. This was the first time Mariah completly re-sang a song for the remixes. She did two brilliantly new vocal versions: one for the dance-remixes and one for the soulremix. LOVE THEM! Her new look (the straight hair) really surprised me back then.

Music Box:
Beautiful intro. Beautiful song.

Now that I know:
GREAT! Quiet little intro and then it takes off! This should have been a single too. Back then (some people still do) everybody said that Mariah only sang ballads. If this had been released as a single it would have proven what brilliant dance tracks Mariah makes. One of the highlights of the album for me.

Never forget you:
Love the lyrics. Love how you interpretate this in different ways. At first I thought (like many others) this was about a boyfriend who had left her, what made me think "the bastard!" Later I realised it's about a lover who died. Ever since this realisation the song always makes me a little sad. Fits really good as a b-side to "Without you" as both lyrics are about lost love. Round this era Babyface wrote beautiful songs for many of my favorite artists (including Toni Braxton and Whitney Houston), so I was really glad that he worked with Mariah. Too bad it only got recognition as a double a-side in the USA.

Without you:
At first I thought this was one of the most boring songs on the album... When it was released as a single I thought it was a bad choice! Oops! I thought that if Dreamlover and Hero couldn't make it to #1 in the Netherlands (they did reach the top 10 though), than Without You would definetly not make it so high. I was soooo wrong: it entered the UK straight at #1 and here in the Netherlands it was #1 for weeks. I was so amazed! I changed my mind about the song radically when I heard it on the radio all the time and saw the incredible videoclip again and again. I fell in love with the song and it is still one of my all time Mariah favorites. Can't liiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiive... (I don't like the earlier versions by Harry Nilsson and others.)

Just to hold you once again:
Very average. Okay song, beautiful backingvocals. But not so special. Mariah has much better ballads then this one.
Maybe she shared my feelings about this song as she sort of re-did the song: If you compare the lyrics to those of My All they come quite close! But although they have similar lyrics, My All is a much greater song!

I've been thinking about you:
LOVE it!!! Actually I love all songs Mariah wrote with Clivillés & Cole! Although I like Now That I Know even more, I also consider this song as one of the highlights of the album. I love how she changes the way she sings during this song. Great beat. And funny how she refers with her adlibs to I've Been Thinking About You by London Beat which had been a recent hit at that time.

All I've ever wanted:
Was named as one of the best tracks on the album in reviews, but also by fans. Personally I'm not so fond of this song. Just like Just To Hold You Once Again, I think it's an okay song, but I usually skip this one. It's a typical Mariah ballad, but she has much better ballads, so maybe that's why I'm a bit critical about this one.

Everything fades away:
Too bad for the Americans that they had to miss out on this bonus-track. Personally I find this a beautfiul ending of a beautiful album. It's different. And the bridge by Cory Rooney makes it even more beautiful. LOVE it!

Do you think of me:
Not on the album, but as it is the b-side of Dreamlover I want to highlight this one too. Great song. Could easily have been on the album. It's too strong to just be a b-side.

Album overall:
Another great album, but more 'pop' orientated than her first two albums who had more 'soul' in my opinion. Because I love the first two albums even more, I hadn't expected she would reach the absolute top with this album. I couldn't even imagine she could become more famous than she already was anyway as she had broken already quiet some records. What one song (Without You in Europe) can do for a singer!

great that you give it a try. I personally believe it is very different from her later material. THIS is the type of music which truely made her a global superstar. It's sad that she abandoned this kind of music... It contains some of her best ballads... and some of her best non-singles for sure.

Music Box spent 11 weeks at #1 in my country. :o

If two weak and cheesy uptempo songs, NTIK and IBTAY were removed from this album, and even Do You Think Of Me were added not only as a b-side, Music Box would be much better...

I've discovered great tracks like Never Fades Away, Not That I Know and Never Forget You. I always liked Hero, Without You, Dreamlover and Anytime You Need A Friend so i added 3 new songs to my Mariah repertoire :D

Next up is re-discovery of Daydream.

God Box turns 20 today. Though it's far from my favorite Mimi album, it's home to many of her signature songs, including her best mid-tempo (Dreamlover), her most iconic song (Hero), and her best cover (Without You). And can we talk about how #BEAUTIFUL this woman looks on the cover? 8-)

Now That I Know and I've Been Thinking About You save this album from snoresville.

The singles are fine in their own way, as is Music Box, but they are so needed to pep things up.

Now That I Know should definitely have been a single and remains one of my fave Mariah tracks of all time. Everything Fades Away has crept up and up on me over the years. On an ultimate Mariah journey album I would follow it with similarly understated but lush The Wind.

However, Do You Think Of Me is my favourite Mariah track of all time. Stunningly atmospheric. I was furious at the time that it wasn't on the album, now I'm kinda glad it wasn't as it makes it more sacred.
This ain't gon be easy

Natural Mariah started in 1997 to now and from 1988 and before

The Mariah that sang her largest hits was a facade. She did it so well, we still are reaching into the past to get that facada back

I love her voice here! I've grown to appreciate album tracks like "I've Been Thinking About You" and "Now That I Know". She could have released those as singles too, they change the mood of the album from being too drenched in ballad singles!

This album is great and actually very underrated in Lamb circles. A lot of folks hate it for being too AC, but it contains some of Mariah's best compositions.
Dreamlover, Anytime You Need A Friend and Everything Fades Away are my favorites. And I have a soft spot for the title track. It's just sooo beautiful.
