Diplo wants to set something straight about the newly crowned World’s Most Beautiful Woman and one of her most anthemic girl-power tracks. (No, don’t worry, “Single Ladies” is safe). Apparently “Run the World (Girls)” started out as one big ha-ha between the song’s co-producer and everyone’s new favorite Tumblrer.

“I still think a lot of people don’t even realize where that song came from,” Diplo said in an interview with his sometime employer the BBC. “That song never really had a push. It was a joke song we did. Kind of like a funny joke kind of song.”

Emphasis on kind of. Given the fact that a playful snippet of the track leaked in April of last year, before the song was officially announced, and considering how wonderfully left-field that Major Lazer “Pon de Floor” sample sounded on a Beyoncé single at first, Diplo’s claims make some sense. The video, nevertheless, was straight-up fierce (and so was her Billboard Music Awards performance of the song).

I know about that....it was just surprising that Beyonce chose something that was already heard as lead single

he was talking about the Major Lazer “Pon de Floor” not the run the world.

this is part from original BBC article.
"I still think a lot of people don't even realise where that song came from," Diplo told Newsbeat.
Beyonce's single, Run the World (Girls), contains parts of Pon De Floor, a track Diplo produced with his group Major Lazer.
He added: "That song never really had a push. It was a song we did, kind of like a funny kind of a joke song."
this is part about boeynce on other interview
“When Beyoncé sampled Pon De Floor it was already in the clubs two years earlier and I told her that,” Diplo admits.
“She said to me ‘No, but do people know this s***?’ So I was like ‘fine go ahead’. I don’t care, I’m in my own world.”

Boy I know you love it
How we're smart enough to make these millions
Strong enough to bear the children
Then get back to business

EVERYTHING about this song is legendary.
The turning point of her career.

Turning point in what sense? Didn't she get a ton of backlash for the song not being good enough (you can even read the first pages) and flopping on the charts? I love it though. This is seriously one of the biggest "hits" of her career despite not even charting high in some charts

Beyoncé lead singles are never well received by those with basic tastes.

To be fair, her lead singles tend to be hit and miss.

This is a miss. The song has become a classic due to the live performances, but it's still incredibly mediocre compared to other standouts on 4.

Yeah I think the video and amazing live performances are making people forget that this got such a Luke warm reception. Personally initially I was pissed because I love Pon de floor and think its a better song. But I don't hate this either.

I guess it was ahead of the time in a way because it's now one of her biggest classic.
it's loved by GP more than those #1 singles in 2011. (it has 160m spotify play :o )

I think the leak and stan war really killed its chart performance back then.
If it was released as original plan, release along with billboard music award performance and oprah show finale.
things could be very different. and brit/gaga stans did most back in the day.
1 star rate in itunes was really crazy, reaching 10k review like that when #1 hit single didn't even have that lol
(I bet RTW has record for shortest time til 10k reviews)
and spam hate word everywhere including radio. I think it kinda create 'hate trend' at the time.

AND on top of that, male radio djs refusing to play the song and being vocal about it on Twitter.

That's when she said **** the charts, let me do it my way.

Felt like this when the song drop, and....still do.

But she gets her entire life performing it, and so do I.
