This week marks 25 years to the week when I started collecting ARIA charts (week ending July 5, 1987). I've written something about it, which you can read here:

http://chartbeat.blogspot.com.au/2012/07/it-all-started-25-years-ago-part-one.html

I'd be interested to hear other members' memories of music in 1987 - it was a great time for pop!

Great blog! I was still too young in 1987 to listen to pop and rock music so there are some songs I don't know. My favourite songs from your 1987 countdown are "The Final Countdown" (though it has been overplayed), "Big Love" from Fleetwood Mac's fantastic "Tango In The Night" album, the two U2 classics, "La Isla Bonita" and "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" (one of Whitney's best).

1979 was one of the best years in music ever, "Gimme Gimme Gimme", "I Was Made For Loving You" and "Born To Be Alive" are all great! :D

What will be in the top 5? Maybe "Another Brick In The Wall", "Heart Of Glass", "Hold The Line", "The Logical Song" and "I Will Survive" ? :o

I'll be posting my top 5 for 1979 tomorrow - most of the ones you've mentioned feature lower down my list. But yeah, 1979 was a fantastic year. I'm glad I am just old enough to remember it all!

My tastes in 1987 were pretty close to what was on the ARIA chart - it was an interesting mix of one-hit wonder Euro dance hits like Paul Lekakis and Man 2 Man, stadium rock like U2 and Bon Jovi, and pop like Whitney and Madonna.

I'll alternate between my own charts and the ARIA charts on my blog. Thanks for reading!

I really enjoyed reading that Gav - had no idea you were a member on UKMix either!

Why don't you ever join us in the ARIA thread?!

I can't say I've had quite the same dedication as you, seeing as I was born several years after you starting collecting the charts! ...I've been following the chart religiously since around 2002-03.

I've checked out your blog and it's great. I live in the U.K. now but I was born and lived in Australia when I was growing up. I first started watching Rage in 1987 but towards the end of the year (December). I remember songs from Inxs, Icehouse, Rick Astley, Jimmy Barnes, George Michael, Michael Jackson, Midnight Oil, etc. I was hooked and I then started watching it every Saturday. I would set my alarm so I wouldn't miss any of the Top 50 and I also used to write every song down. I even used to remember what position every song reached. Charts moved pretty slowly back then. I did this every week from 1988 until July 1991 when I left Australia. I was last in Australa in January 1997 and picked up some charts while I was there from record stores. I'm glad there are archives now that can be viewed online. Rage brings back some great memories from a great era :)

Hey JimJim, thanks for the link - I didn't know it was there! I'll check it out for sure.

adg, yeah, I used to set the alarm too and get up at ridiculous o'clock, even though I'd also be videoing Rage! Good times.

Thanks for reading the blog!

Yep, there's a new one every Sunday (obviously!) in Chart Analysis. You'd be handy for settling some of our trivia arguments
