Is it really so important for Madonna to have another top 10 hit? I hope it's not.
As a fan it’s not that important to me, but in terms of who Madonna is, her legacy and what information is remembered about her, I think so. Let’s face it - a top 10 single after barely scrapping a top 100 hit last album would be huge for her. I mean in an ideal world what I’d love for her to do is what she pulled off in her 40s - she found a sound that worked for her but also connected with people outside of her fan base and found her a new generation of fans.
I’m not saying she should ever pander towards teenagers - she didn’t with ROL or Music - but she still pulled it off. She proved she could transcend that silly age barrier and make music that people connected with. The thing is, that’s what Madonna has always done and why people are always interested when she is making new music: she has so many casual fans that will dive back into Madonna fandom is the music works for them.
The ‘problem’ is that the last 2 (possibly 3) albums haven’t connected with parts of her core fan base, never mind the general public. I have complete faith in her and the fact that she can pull something off. Rebel Heart (Avicci) proved that for me. Had she been able to come back with that song, without any leaks, it could have been her biggest hit since 4 Minutes.
So I really hope she figures it out this time. If she doesn’t manage something this time we really are looking at her turning into a legacy act like Paul McCartney and Elton.
