Something can be likely and still impressive. Impressive =/= surprising. It's likely (nay, certain) that Taylor Swift will sell over a million copies first week in the US with 1989. That is no longer surprising, but it doesn't make it any less impressive.

Timmy... The album had a messy release schedule here. Some had the chance to buy the album on Friday (Which actually is the usual release day in a week here in Germany). But Amazon made it available on a Monday. Itunes was even more weird with a Tuesday release. So she lost so many sales actually.

I wouldn't say she just had 4 days of sales. Thats not true. As you could get the album in retails on Friday and Saturday too. But the messy release of the album definitely played a big part in her debut week. So a debut at number 4 is pretty strong . I seriously don't get, why it isn't impressive to you. Get over it, for once.

People can always find an excuse.
No one said that, but she didn't smash for example in Germany without the iTunes deal.
what deal?
Banner for the whole pre order time, single and album at the first slots of the store etc. while not being available for streaming.

As I already said: It's impressive if you outdo your (lowish) standard by far or are able to maintain a high standard...

@truthless: Did you actually expect 1989 to debut lower than Red or why do you react like that? As I already said, it's the norm that album x+1 debuts higher than x, bar cases like x+1's debut week being a busy one while x's debut week having been a rather slow one...

iTunes was also on Monday, the date was wrong. Of course there are always some stupid CD retailers that put it out the wrong day. This is very common. 99% of her sales are from Mon-Thu.

99%? Where did you pull that from..?

There's no reason to think that. There were loads of the album available in that retail on Friday.I don't really think that retails were "stupid". I think they just didn't want to stock up on a Monday just for an artist. They are used to do that for the usual Friday releases. Don't wanna defend them. But the label's move was stupid aswell. So yeah.

@Timmy. Upps I totally missed your point . Thought you were surprised that she didn't debut higher. Sorry.^

Well I honestly don't think they were actually allowed to it. iTunes would go crazy if the learned that somebody else could offer the album before them.

The charts did not count those probably minor sales though. Charts only track after official release date. All sales count for the awards though.

We won't know if those sales from Friday and Saturday weren't counted. As long as there isn't an official statement on that matter.

We can confirm first day US sales of 637k of 1989. Taylor said in an interview that she was told that was the amount. :o

Depends on how the project is handled not only in the first few months but also in the long run, but it's definitely possible...

I think so. It seems like a strong album. If promo and singles do well then i cant see why close to 6 million is possible

Even her country albums did not 5 but over 6 million so why this one couldn't? , of course she will do over 5 million. IMO she'll do between 6 - 7 million

As a chart analysis user I'm very very excited right now! Aren't you? Impressive numbers by HDD but I think with this amount the difference between the estimations and the real numbers will be bigger than usual. BTW, I hope if Tay doesn't get the record she must have stopped further. I would die if the final numbers are 1,318

There is like 50% chance she breaks the record. HDD's numbers are frequently 2-3% off from Soundscan's numbers. This could very well end up below 1.27m or above 1.37m. We just don't know right now.
