This is the charts and sales history thread for Japanese singer Namie Amuro, born September 1977 in Naha, Japan, on the subtropical island of Okinawa. She started her career at age 14 in the girl group Super Monkey's (sic). The group went largely unnoticed for a while, but achieved popularity in their final year. During this time, Namie was pushed to the forefront and the group's last releases were labelled "Amuro Namie with Super Monkey's".

Following the group's breakup, Namie became a solo artist (the other group members continued as new group MAX to some success). She has since sold close to 35 million copies of her albums and singles, only counting physical releases. Her debut album was briefly the best-selling album ever in Japan, until it was overthrown later the same year by the group globe (ironically, one of that group's members was her own producer, Tetsuya Komuro). Following a dip in popularity, she switched her sound from eurobeat to a more r&b-inspired sound. This led to her second wind on top of the charts, which still continues to this day.

Sweet 19 Blues

Image

Released July 22 1996, Sweet 19 Blues was Namie's first solo debut. Technically, another album was released before this (Dance Tracks Vol. 1), but that was under her old label and only featured songs released with the group Super Monkey's. Sweet 19 Blues reached #1 on the Oricon charts upon release, selling 1,921,850 copies in its first week. At the time, this was the highest opening for a Japanese record - it is currently the 9th highest. It charted for 42 weeks (Oricon only having a Top 100 at the time) and sold 3,359,450 copies. It is the 13th best-selling album ever in Japan.

Has FEEL passed 400k copies in Japan? I just remember watching 392k copies before and it was out of 300 Oricon weekly albums.

Namie is a legend. Still doing so well to this day. Ayumi used to be huge but her career took the Gaga route and no one cares anymore, unfortunately.

Great debut!

Week 5: 5,800 (#14)
Week 6: 3,750 (#24)
Week 7: 2,813 (#29)

Total Sales: 225,943*

.................
Her Sales are still very good but they are dropped.
FEEL (2013) sold less that Uncontrolled (2012) and now _genic sells less than FEEL.

Studio Albums' Sales
2012 - Uncontrolled: 539,585* (total)
2013 - FEEL: 392,576* (total)
2015 - Genic: 225,943* (still selling)

She's the best-selling female singer in Japan at the moment along with Kana Nishino thought and she is lucky that she had a 2nd peak in her career after her decline during the early 00s...
I hope that Genic will be among the 10 best-selling albums in Japan this year...

She's been in the business for 23 years, plus she does not promote whatsoever, she didn't release any singles prior to the album (the singles that she did release were not included on Genic) - so naturally she's declining. She still sells A LOT more than any other female solo artist in Japan.

_genic won't be ranked on Top 10 in 2015 because of its lower sales than others'.
However, _genic is the best selling album among solo artists including both male and female singers. Namie Amuro is still the best selling solo artist in Japan.
Especially, even Kumi Koda and Ayumi Hamasaki are struggling to sell 50k copis in total. 230k is the best score ever this year.

She's never promoted on TV since 2010. Plus, many people consider her music on Western Pop. That's the reason why _genic doesn't sell well. Plus, Japanese market is declining more and more. For example, Mr.Children who is the best selling artist today sold only 350k its brand new album last month.

Such a pity...
She ranked at #4 on last year's top 100 yearly chart.
I hope she'll remain stable with her next albums.
Realesing a studio album without plysical or digital singles prior its release wasn't a smart move.
At least, the sales are very good for today's standards.

Her decline with her past three albums is perfectly natural.

Uncontrolled had a whole SLEW of hit singles, including Love Story, which was an enormous hit.

FEEL only had one physical single, Big Boys Cry, which I am fairly certain is her least-selling single (both physically and digitally) in ages, and a digital single, Contrail, which did well going Platinum. That was it.

_genic has absolutely nothing. TSUKI went Platinum and so did Brighter Day, but they aren't on the album.

I don't think her doing "Western music" is a very significant reason for her decline in sales. Uncontrolled was distinctly Western too.

The fact that she's going Platinum with an album in 2015, without ANY singles, any hits and no TV promotion, in a day and age where female artists struggle to even go Gold, is beyond fantastic.

It's worth to mention that her single, Hero has just become her best-selling single (in terms of physical sales) since 2012.

Sit! Stay! Wait! Down! / Love Story was released in 2012 and sold 161,659 physical copies in total.
Since then Amuro has released 7 physical cd singles.
The best-selling one among them is Hero, released a few month ago with 68,164* physical sales (still charting).

A new physical single titled Dear Diary / Fighter will be released tomorrow!!!

^ I noticed that. Great to see, but also great to see that both Hero and Mint have been digital hits. I hope Dear Diary and/or Fighter can replicate that success. After an era without any regular single releases, and one with a flop physical and one successful digital single, it's nice that she's having an era that's both "regular" AND successful.

Hope her next album can go Platinum as well, but given that _genic only JUST made the 250k mark in hard sales, I wouldn't blame her if she couldn't.

Dear Diary / Fighter debuts at #3 on Oricon weekly singles chart with 44,880 physical copies sold!!! :o Great numbers!!!
This is her best debut week (in terms of physical sales) among her cd singles since 2012 Go Round / YEAH-OH that opened with 46,983.
Mint opened with 28,136 and Hero with 28,879 this year!!!

She is a survivor, an artist with longevity in Japan, a market where huge pop stars fade with time.
I can see her next studio album outselling _genic.

^ Absolutely! Her career longevity would be impressive anywhere else, but especially in a market that is as fast-paced and so especially harsh on female artists as Japan. It's even more impressive that she actually hit a low point in her career around 2003, yet has managed to recover so spectacularly. All while being a single mother in a country that, socially, is far more conservative on such matters than most of the West.

There's no doubt that she's the most successful female veteran artist in Japan. Her first week sales routinely outsell the total sales of her past rivals Ayumi and Koda. And she hasn't performed on TV in like 10 years. She is universally liked and appreciated in Japan, gets tons of endorsement deals, etc.
