KENDRICK'S 200 MILLION

Kendrick Lamar will become the first artist other than Drake to collect more than 200 million streams for an album in a single week. Tracks from DAMN. (TDE/Interscope) have already been streamed more than 50 million times.

Kendrick Lamar (TDE/Interscope) 460-485k SPS, 275-300k album

KENDRICK'S 300 MILLION (UPDATE)

Kendrick Lamar will become the first artist other than Drake to collect more than 200 million streams for an album in a single week. And it's now looking like the set could reach heights as high as 300m. This would be only the second time since we’ve been monitoring streams that tracks from an album have been streamed over 300m times. The first, of course, was with Drake’s More Life only a few weeks ago, which pulled in 385m streams; More Life scored the year’s biggest debut with 505k.

Tracks from DAMN. (TDE/Interscope) have racked up 150m combined streams at Spotify and Apple Music thus far. The DAMN. tracks occupy nine of the Top 10 slots on Spotify and the Top 11 slots on Apple Music.

THIS WEEK'S CHART-TOPPING DEBUTS:
Kendrick Lamar (TDE/Interscope) 480-510k SPS, 280-305k album.
John Mayer (Columbia) 110-120k, 105-110k

After debuting a week ago at No. 2 on the Hot 100, Kendrick Lamar's "Humble." drops to No. 3. Still, the track spends a second week at No. 1 on Streaming Songs (43.2 million, down 7 percent), as well as on the audio subscription services-based On-Demand Streaming Songs chart (27.3 million on-demand U.S. streams, down 18 percent). "Humble." tumbles from No. 1 to No. 5 on Digital Song Sales (58,000, down 48 percent), while advancing by 53 percent to 23 million in airplay audience. The track tops the Hot Rap Songs chart for a second week. It introduces Lamar's LP DAMN., released Friday (April 14) and due on next week's Billboard 200 albums chart.

AN APPROPRIATELY DAMNED, POST-EASTER TOP 20

Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN. (TDE/Interscope) has officially surpassed 200m streams and is on its way to a possible 300m first-week number. While Drake’s record of 385m first-week streams of More Life (YMCMB/Republic) is safe, DAMN. has already sold more albums with three days to go in the chart week. This puts Lamar in a close race for the year’s top debut, currently held by More Life with 505k. We’ll update daily as the race tightens. Here’s how things look at midweek:

SPS:
* Kendrick Lamar (TDE/Interscope) 490-515k SPS, 290-310k albums
* John Mayer (Columbia) 120-130k, 110-120k

Moana (Walt Disney) 42-47k, 25-28k
Bruno Mars (Atlantic) 42-47k, 18-21k
Migos (Quality Control) 35-40k, 4-6k

The forecast for Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN. has grown, as industry prognosticators now suggest the set could debut with around 500,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending April 20. (On April 17, it was estimated to bow with perhaps 475,000.) Further, the set has a chance of scoring the largest week of 2017 for an album. The current biggest week of the year is owned by Drake’s More Life, which debuted with 505,000 units earned in the week ending March 23, according to Nielsen Music.
Lamar is heading for a robust sales week with DAMN., as the title could bow with around 300,000 in traditional album sales. That would earn the set the largest sales week of 2017 for a hip-hop album (beating Drake’s More Life, which started with 225,000 sold) and the second-biggest sales week of the year overall, behind only Ed Sheeran’s ÷ (Divide), which launched with 322,000 copies sold in the week ending March 9.

If DAMN. debuts at No. 1, it will give Lamar his third leader. He previously led the Billboard 200 with his last two albums: 2016’s Untitled Unmastered. (178,000 units in its first week, 142,000 of which were in album sales) and 2015’s To Pimp a Butterfly (363,000 units; 324,000 in album sales).

KENDRICK VS. DRAKE: A NEW CHAMP

Based on today’s numbers it appears Kendrick Lamar will beat Drake’s record for the year’s biggest debut. The TDE/Interscope star’s DAMN. is now looking to bow at about 510-520k SPS, surpassing the 505k for Drake’s Views; it’s already eclipsed Views in sales. While the race remains tight, Kendrick has emerged as the favorite. Stay tuned.

Kendrick Lamar Earns Third No. 1 Album on Billboard 200 Chart With Biggest Debut of 2017
4/22/2017 by Keith Caulfield

Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN. blasts in at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart with 2017’s biggest week for an album: 603,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending April 20, according to Nielsen Music. That’s the most units earned by an album in a single week in nearly a year, since Drake’s Views launched with 1.04 million units in the week ending May 5, 2016. The previous record holder for 2017’s biggest week was the debut of Drake’s More Life, with 505,000 units in the week ending March 23.

DAMN. marks Lamar’s third No. 1 album, following last year’s Untitled Unmastered. and 2015’s To Pimp a Butterfly. DAMN. was released April 14 through Top Dawg/Aftermath/Interscope Records.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new May 6-dated chart — where Lamar opens at No. 1 — will be posted in full to Billboard’s websites on Tuesday, March 21. The rest of the new chart's top 10 will be revealed on Sunday, April 23.

DAMN.’s debut is larger than expected: on the afternoon of April 20, industry prognosticators had forecasted a bow of between 530,000 and 550,000 units. (And that figure was an upgrade from three days earlier, when its start was pegged at 475,000.) DAMN.’s forecast kept growing (into its eventual finish of 603,000 units) thanks to the set’s sustained strong popularity on streaming services through the week.

The set’s start of 227,000 SEA units is the second-largest streaming week ever for an album. (227,000 SEA units equates to 340.6 million streams of the songs from the 14-track album during its debut frame, as each SEA unit represents 1,500 streams of songs from the album.) The only larger streaming week for an album was registered by Drake’s More Life, which launched with 257,000 SEA units (384.8 million song streams).

In addition, on April 18, Lamar surprise-released four digital editions of the album only available through his official website. The sets were available until April 20 and offered a digital download of DAMN., along with either an autographed vinyl LP or CD version of the set.

In total, DAMN. sold 353,000 in traditional album sales in its first week. That’s both the largest sales week of 2017 (surpassing Ed Sheeran’s ÷ [Divide] launch of 322,000) and a career-high sales frame for Lamar (beating To Pimp a Butterfly’s bow of 324,000 in 2015). DAMN.’s sales are the largest for an album in a week since J. Cole’s 4 Your Eyez Only started with 363,000 in the week ending Dec. 15, 2016.

Canada 8-)

Kendrick Lamar’s Damn. debuts at No. 1 on the Billboard Canadian Albums chart with 35,000 total consumption units that blend sales and on-demand streams.

This is his third straight album to debut in first place and this album catapults to the top with 25.4 million streams in Canada.

It is the fourth highest one week total to date, only surpassed by Drake's first two weeks of release with More Life and the debut week of The Weeknd’s Starboy.

All 14 songs on Lamar's album place within the top 50 on the Streaming Songs chart, suggesting what we all knew--that the album, like the artist, is MONSTER.

"Humble.," released on Top Dawg/Aftermath/Interscope Records, becomes the 1,062nd No. 1 in the Hot 100's history (which dates to Aug. 4, 1958) and Lamar's second, and first as a lead act. He first topped the June 6, 2015-dated chart as featured on Taylor Swift's "Bad Blood."

"Humble." surpasses its prior No. 2 Hot 100 high, set upon its debut two weeks ago. The track spends a third week at No. 1 on Streaming Songs, up 56 percent to an astounding 67.4 million U.S. streams in the week ending April 20, according to Nielsen Music (good for the Hot 100's top Streaming Gainer award). Only one song has posted a greater weekly total on Streaming Songs (which originated on March 2, 2013): Baauer's "Harlem Shake," which peaked with 103 million, powered heavily by user-generated clips featuring the song's audio, the week that the survey debuted. Notably, in between "Harlem" and "Humble.," Adele's "Hello" posted the highest weekly streaming sum: 61.6 million, in its first week (Nov. 14, 2015).

"Humble." also leads the audio subscription services-based On-Demand Streaming Songs chart for a third frame with the highest weekly total (62.9 million on-demand U.S. streams) in the chart's history (handily passing the 36.2 million logged by Drake's "One Dance," featuring WizKid and Kyla, as reflected on the May 21, 2016, chart). It drops 5-10 on Digital Song Sales (56,000 downloads sold, down 3 percent, in the week ending April 20) and debuts at No. 47 on Radio Songs (23 million in airplay audience, up 26 percent, in the week ending April 23).

"Humble." tops the Hot Rap Songs chart for a third week and returns for a second week atop Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs (2-1).
