Billboard 200 Chart Moves: Taylor Swift Gains After Politics Post & AMAs, John Lennon's 'Imagine' Returns
10/19/2018 by Keith Caulfield

— Taylor Swift, reputation – No. 26 — In a week where Taylor Swift made a rare statement about politics and also opened the American Music Awards, the pop star collected a 27 percent gain in album sales in the week ending Oct. 11, according to Nielsen Music.

Swift shared a lengthy post via her Instagram account on Oct. 7 about the upcoming midterm elections on Nov. 6, remarking that in the past she had been “reluctant to publicly voice” her political opinions. She endorsed a pair of candidates and urged fans to register to vote. On Oct. 9, Swift opened ABC’s live broadcast of the AMAs with a performance of “I Did Something Bad” from her reputation album. Following her fourth win of the evening, for artist of the year, she told viewers to “get out and vote” on Nov. 6.

The AMAs and the buzz that her politics post generated spurred a 27 percent gain in album sales for Swift’s catalog of releases (rising to 9,000 sold). The reputation album rises 30-26 on the Billboard 200 with 19,000 equivalent album units earned (up 17 percent). Her overall equivalent album unit total for the week, across all her albums, increased 11 percent to 41,000 units earned.

Swift’s total track sales climbed 28 percent to 24,000, while her on-demand streams rose 8 percent to 56.5 million.

Wasn't the 1989 tour the top grossing north American tour of all time? Wouldn't it make this the top grossing one for everyone, not just women?

I didn't just make it up. According to pollstar the 1989 world tour held the title for top grossing North American tour when it surpassed the rolling stones in 2015. Garth must have then broken the record when his massive 4yr long tour ended last year.

This "record" is about the highest-grossing tour in North America in a single year. 1989 Tour grossed $199.4 million in 2015 and Bigger Bang Tour grossed $162 million in 2005 both only in North America, making it the highest-grossing tour on Pollstar's #1 tours for the last 30 years.

2018: Taylor Swift - $277.3 million
2015: Taylor Swift - $199.4 million
2017: U2 - $176.1 million
2016: Beyoncé - $169.4 million
2018: Beyoncé & Jay-Z - $166.4 million

Now she has the 5th highest-grossing concert tour of all time in North America:

#1 $364.3 million - Garth Brooks
#2 $308.5 million - Billy Joel
#3 $300.5 million - The Rolling Stones
#4 $279 million - U2
#5 $277.3 million - Taylor Swift

Those units are massive but the drop from 1989 to rep is very underwhelming. I guess it's the market + no promo.

Taylor Swift Closes Reputation Stadium Tour with $345 Million

After breaking the record for the most successful U.S. tour to-date, Taylor Swift flew around the world to conquer the Eastern hemisphere. The final reports for Taylor Swift’s Reputation Stadium Tour are in and the superstar finishes her latest international trek with $345.7 million, according to figures reported to Billboard Boxscore. She tops the Hot Tours tally dated Dec. 8 (see below) with $30.5 million from her final five shows in Australia, New Zealand and Japan.

Swift’s two shows at the Tokyo Dome on Nov. 20-21 pulled in $14.9 million, making the biggest international report of the Reputation Stadium Tour and the sixth biggest gross from the tour overall. At 100,109 tickets sold, the Japanese shows were the 12th engagement from the tour to cross the six-figure attendance mark.

The Reputation Stadium Tour’s final $345.7 million gross is a 38% jump from 2015’s The 1989 World Tour, which pulled in $250.7 million. Swift began her 2018 trek on May 8 at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Ariz., playing for six months before wrapping with the aforementioned Japanese dates. The tour was in support of Swift’s sixth studio LP reputation, which was recently named the top album of the year on the Billboard 200 year-end recap.

At the close of her latest tour, Swift’s career gross climbs to $935.4 million from 9,689,692 tickets sold.

Further down the list, Trans-Siberian Orchestra make their first dent with two reports from their annual holiday tour. Further, Fleetwood Mac continues their first tour since the departure of Lindsey Buckingham and Tenacious D tours in support of their first album in six years. Check out the full list below.
