The discography website is

http://www.abba4therecord.com/

But many of the disc featured there are only promotional releases or only for radio use.

Ring-Ring (single) was also released on Mexico. It has written “Los suecos/The swedes” on the cover, but it was never officially programmed on radio, so I don't rhink it sold more than 100 copies

There's a nice recap of Abba's US hit singles on the YouTube channel "Billboard Classic":

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uIPhEso5 ... ature=plcp

However, many songs that "never charted" according to this video were actually never released as singles in the US, like for example "Dance (While The Music Goes On)", "When I Kissed The Teacher", "Tiger", "Eagle", "As Good As New" etc.

Despite this inaccuracy the video is still a nice recap of Abba's best singles and album tracks.

PS: Until now I never realized how late they released some of their singles in the US, especially "Chiquitita" which entered the US Hot 100 in November 1979! :o
I guess it would have been a much bigger US hit had it been released right after the "Music For Unicef" concert (like it was in Europe).

Thanks to Arab for these numbers! :D

Regarding "Icon", I didn't know that it contains the same eleven tracks as "20th Century Masters". :o
I found the following explanation on the net:
Universal's 2010 compilation Icon repackages their 2000 disc 20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection, retaining the same 11 tracks -- and track order -- and adding new artwork.

Here are my estimations for the sales of the "Waterloo" single. I hope that this will revive the Abba singles sales discussion (which was vivid a couple of weeks ago).

Waterloo - singles sales estimations excluding downloads

UK 467k in 1974 (498k = Billboard magazine)
Ireland 30k (50k = Billboard magazine)
France 500k (certified)
West Germany 450k (#1 4x)
Switzerland (#1 9x) & Austria (# 2) 125k (combined)
Netherlands (# 2) & Belgium (#1 5x) 125k (combined)
Norway (#1 8x) & Finland (#1) 100k (combined)
Denmark 50k
Sweden (Swedish version #2 & English version #3) 150k
Italy 10k (# 14)
Spain 50k (# 3)
Portugal 30k
Eastern Europe 100k

US 800k (Abba Express 1989)
Canada 30k (# 7)
Australia 75k (# 4)
South Africa 50k (#1)

+ 50k for other countries

TOTAL = 3.2 million

Any additions / corrections etc. are more than welcome :D

As far as I know there was no East-German release of the WATERLOO-single. At least not by ABBA. The song itself was released by the Gerd Michaelis-Chor as single with a non-ABBA track on the flipside.

Verified additional worldwide releases:

New Zealand (# 3)
Zimbabwe (# 2)
Argentina
Japan
Bolivia (actually an EP with the swedish (!) version)
Chile
Greece
Lebanon
Mexico
Peru
Paraguay
Turkey
Uruguay
Yugoslavia

Probably releases in Israel, Philippines, Brazil.

Due to Carl Magnus Palm's Book the single saw a release in a total of 54 countries.

Oh, ok, I assumed that it was released there because they performed it on the East German TV show "Ein Kessel Buntes" in 1974:

http://www.abbaontv.com/1974/descriptio ... untes.html

But it seems you're right, I just checked the discography website mentioned by poiuyt and according to this site, "Waterloo" was not one of the six singles released in the GDR:

This is the source where I have taken my infos from, too.

The Waterloo-Album was released in the GDR with a different cover.

The ABBA-Songbook (by dtv - Deutscher Taschenbuch-Verlag, 1982) mentioned that Waterloo has sold 100.000 units in Germany before the ESC took place. I guess, it's a myth. The German release date was 13th march, the ESC took place on 6th april and the song entered the German charts on 29th april at 28. There's no way selling 100.000 copies within three or four weeks without any appearance in the bestseller-list.

Yep, and the GDR version contained "So Long" instead of "Honey Honey" (which is quite bizarre as "Honey Honey" was huge in Germany) :o

Could anyone confirm the UK sales for the "Waterloo" single? I assumed it sold 510k without downloads, that would be 498k in 1974 (according to Billboard) plus 11.4k in 2004.

However, there are also sources saying it "only" sold 360k in 1974. Others say that the figure of 510k does include downloads (apparently it sold 43k downloads). :o

I can't imagine, that anyone confirms a number like 498k (the usual way would be rounding it up to 500k, I pressume). Either it is meant to let it look like a realistic number (by whoever), although it isn't - or it is (was by then) the correct number.

The Waterloo-Single saw some re-issues in the UK (1978, 1984, 1986). Despite none of them made the charts, I don't think they didn't sell nothing.

In the UK, "Waterloo" sold 467k as a physical single and 43k downloads, so the total of 510k includes downloads. This was confirmed to me by another Abba fan who has deep knowledge of their sales figures.

Hi Guys back from my hols

Waterloo - Single

Its a strange thing that the Brotherhood of Man is said to have sold the most records from a eurovision win - Six million copies + of Save your kisses for me(They are great, still preforming in their Eurovsion line up - wonderful entertainers) and it was not a big hit in the USA (number 27 if I remember right)

Abba's waterloo I believe sold 5 million - again I know the onus is on me to prove this - but it is widely acknowledged to be the biggest seller up to that point 1974. It would have hit in most places that had eurovsion and even those that do not USA, New Zealand and Australia spring to mind.

I will post my figures shortly.

As an side issue to this I was on Holiday in Jodan and heard Abba twice - Mamma Mia and Dancing Queen - and I popped into the record shops in Aqaba and Abba's LP'S (Two compilations Gold and number ones) were on sale there - which did surprise me but goes tom show that Abba's international appeal is evident even today.

63 58 The Essential Collection ABBA

It will probably climb again the next weeks due to the Mamma Mia movie being shown on German TV yesterday. I guess Gold will re-enter as well.
