Interesting. Well they did play Oslo, Norway this tuesday (the 10th of July), which likely increased the demand.
They play in Denmark tonight btw. Sadly I'm not going

Ah, "Justice" has joined the 5M SS club. The 12th catalog album to do so.
"Metallica" will soon join "Come On Over" in the very exclusive 15M SS club.

Thanks for all the updates you've posted!!!

I think Metallica are a kick ass metal band, without a doubt, I saw them at Wembley a few years ago. However, I have to say I think they lost their direction after the black album, the Load lps weren't bad, but failed to capture what their previous Lps had, then they went orchestral which isn't in any way being original, many other groups have done the same, as well as doing a covers album to kill some time. Then St.Anger was hopeless. I find it a real shame what has happened. I hope, and I havnt lost that yet, they recover with their next LP. If you want to make the Iron Maiden comparison, well their LPs, certainly in the US do not come close to Metallica in sales, but I would say this, Maiden never lost direction, of who they were or what their purpose musically was, in the same way Id say AC/DC did and thats why I think both those bands have lasted so well and haven't been affected by the whole movement thing, be it grunge, nu metal, whatever. Metallica shouldn't try and adapt themselves to new musical trends like U2, but simply be themselves and realise we LOVED their first 5 lps, now FOCUS!!!

"Metallica" or "the Black album" as it is also known has spent 370 weeks on the u.s.(billboard) album charts making it the 4th most charted album ever in the states.
In Australia it has spent 225 weeks on the album charts making it the 5th longest charting album there.
Sales wise it is in the top 30 of all time in America and Top 40 of all time worldwide.

Less than 5K in the black friday shopping week for Metallica...
# 113 must be one of the lowest positions I've ever seen for this title, and no sign of And Justice For All or Master Of Puppets!!

They have a new album coming out in 2008. This will probably boost their catalog sales once again.

Mexico certifications

From 2000 onwards:
Metallica - GOLD on 15-08-2000 (I think this is for a 1999 re-release) - 100,000
S&M - GOLD on 07-04-2000 - 100,000

I think people have already posted the information they have in this thread.

'Metallica' is back on Billboard Top Hard Rock Album chart this week:

25 RE-ENTRY 14 Metallica, Metallica (Diamond Certification) 14
Elektra 61113* | AG | 18.98/11.98 20

..but it is not on the top 50 catalog chart.

All right, so now the Soundscan total for "Metallica" (the black album) is over 15 million. So clearly the cert should be updated to at least 15xPlatinum.

My question is this: is it possible that the album has actually sold several million more in the U.S. than even Soundscan accounts for? There's no club sales figure posted, and by comparison, Shania Twain's "Come on Over", the only album with a higher soundscan total, is less than a million over "Metallica" by Soundscan figures but is certified 20xPlatinum. Whitney Houston and Hootie & the Blowfish both have albums with higher certification levels (due to club sales, I would assume) but MUCH lower Soundscan figures than "Metallica".

Was "Metallica" sold at music clubs? If so, considering the retail popularity of the album, isn't WEA being overly conservative with its recent certs even if no club sales data is available?

Given that "Metallica"s retail sales over the past 17 years are almost unrivalled, I just don't understand why it hasn't gotten a higher cert. Even in 2003, when it was last certified, total shipments must have been higher than 14 million given all sales outlets.

At the end of the day, I'm rather mystified as to how one album gets a cert that's 4 million higher than its Soundscan total and another gets a cert that's actually lower than SS figures. Are club sales really that substantial? And if so, would they really differ that drastically from one album to another?

^Metallica has never been available at music clubs.

I'm sure you know this, but certifications are not automatic. Metallica's record label has to apply for and pay for a re-certification.

Yes, and that's true for all their catalog.

Assume this thewufs, we can safely say that, for example, "Come On Over" was certainly a bigger catalog seller than Metallica's enponymous album from 2000 to 2004. To check catalog sales, you should always keep in mind that 3 major acts don't have sales non-scanned : The Beatles, Pink Floyd and Metallica. So when 'Back In Black' sold the same in a year according to soundscan than the Black album of Metallica, you can be sure that Back In Black sold much more when all you counted.
