MUSIC’S BIGGEST RELEASE WEEK?

Word has it that in addition to Kanye West—who has tweeted a 2/11 release date for his forthcoming Def Jam set, Swish—we will see long-awaited new sets from YMCMB/Republic’s Drake and Roc Nation’s Rihanna around Grammy time as well.

When will the latter two superstars deliver to get maximum Grammy bang? Can they do so without each diluting the other’s impact?

As you may have read here, Riri appears in a new CBS spot touting both the Grammys and the Super Bowl.

In any event, having these three superstar releases in the marketplace at once, amid the sky-high profile of Music’s Biggest Night, is undeniably good for the biz.

Riri’s 2012 set, Unapologetic, bowed at #1 on the HITS Album Sales Chart with 240k; it’s sold 1.2m+ RTD.

Drake’s If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late—regarded as a “mixtape” rather than an official album—moved just under 500k after its surprise drop just before Valentine’s Day 2015, and its tally to date is just under 1.2m.

Yeezus, Kanye’s challenging mid-2013 set, hit with 328k and is up to 724k RTD.

HERE COMES KANYE

Leave it to Kanye West to not only change the title of his album multiple times but to leave the new title a mystery mere days before its slated drop—and to offer fans a free download if they can guess it.

Whatever it’s called—not So Help Me God, not Swish, not Waves, apparently not T.L.O.P.—the G.O.O.D./Def Jam set is due to drop early on Friday (most likely just after his sold-out Yeezy fashion show at Madison Square Garden on 2/11, which will be beamed to venues worldwide). Early estimates for the digital-only first week are in the 275k range.

The collection apparently features guests including Kendrick Lamar, Sia, Post Malone and Ty Dolla $ign, judging from the tracklist West leaked online. Ticket buyers for the fashion-show “experience” will reportedly be emailed a download link for the set once it’s officially released.

Kanye will perform on Saturday Night Live this weekend (hosted by Melissa McCarthy), and is due to hit a number of late night and daytime shows in the ensuing period.

Formerly managed by Roc Nation, the irrepressible, unpredictable artist now manages himself. How will this arrangement affect the album rollout, marketing and promotion?

While thus far there’s no indication that Kanye will perform or otherwise appear on the Grammys—and his itinerary for the weekend before Music’s Biggest Night keeps him on the opposite coast until Sunday at least—anything could happen. And he could certainly use the occasion to issue new content whether he’s there or not.

Formerly managed by Roc Nation, the irrepressible, unpredictable artist now manages himself. How will this arrangement affect the album rollout?

Plenty of questions remain. Will Def Jam be working a single upon release? How will the digital download bundles be tabulated in his first-week total? Will the title-TBA album be available for streaming? If so, where? West was initially part of the Tidal group of stars but was later wooed away by Apple. Will Cupertino get an exclusive? Might Kanye instead hold off for at least a few weeks to focus consumers on buying the set? How long before a tour is announced?

West’s challenging, confrontational 2013 set, Yeezus, bowed at #1 with 328k. 2010’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy debuted with 495k and has sold more than 1.5m RTD. His 2011 collaboration with Jay Z was also a #1 and has sold 1.7m RTD.

West dropped single “Facts” on New Year’s Eve, followed by “Real Friends” and “No More Parties in L.A.,” the latter featuring Lamar. Last year saw him release the multiplatinum track “FourFiveSeconds” featuring Paul McCartney and Rihanna (which was Top 5 at Pop radio and #1 at Urban) and “All Day” f/McCartney, Theophilus London and Allan Kingdom. “Parties” appears to be the only single of these included on the album.

I guess it's out?

http://www.complex.com/music/2016/02/ka ... e=facebook

For the first time in almost three years, we have a new album from Kanye West. The project, titled The Life of Pablo, is available exclusively on Tidal, and is now out...

Tidal subscribers will be able to exclusively stream the 18-track album for seven days, and it will also be available to everyone to download via Kanye's site for one week.

KANYE'S TIDAL WAVE (SECOND UPDATE)

As expected, Kanye West delivered his new G.O.O.D./Def Jam album exclusively to Tidal for streaming right after his Saturday Night Live performance.

Yeezy also put The Life of Pablo on sale exclusively from KanyeWest.com on what was to be its first week of release. But in a quintessentially Kanye move, West tweeted Sunday morning that he’d given the exclusive to Tidal for another week before making it available to other outlets, apparently including his own.

Given the firestorm of fan complaints and reported malfunctions in the hours following the "release," it's unclear at this point whether anyone at any point was actually able to buy the album.

Those who enter the site will encounter not a "buy" button but an interminable message/rap from one Yasiin Bey, aka Mos Def. Truly Bizarre.

So was a Saturday tweet in which he claimed to be $53m in debt.

Will Kanye later deliver music to iTunes, Amazon and other e-tailers, or will he use Jay Z’s superstar-owned platform for sales as well? Will he limit Tidal’s streaming exclusive to a week or two? What about physical? Is the windowed streaming and sales exclusive on the Rihanna record the model here? So many questions...

Kanye West's new album isn't in the charts because Tidal won't release streaming data
by Rob Price

Kanye West's latest album won't be appearing in the charts any time soon.

As The New York Times reports, streaming platform Tidal isn't giving out any data about how much it has been streamed — so Billboard can't include it.

"Billboard has been informed that Tidal is not currently reporting streams for tracks on Kanye’s album to Nielsen Music," Billboad's VP of charts and data development Silvio Pietroluongo said. "Therefore streams from Tidal for this title will not contribute to Billboard’s chart rankings at this time."

"The Life of Pablo" (TLOP), released earlier in February, is Kanye West's seventh studio album.

The launch has been at times disorientating. Kanye — AKA Yeezy — jumped between multiple names for the album before finally settling on TLOP, and posted frequently updated track listings on Twitter as he worked.

On February 12, he debuted the album at a show at Madison Square Garden alongside his latest fashion line — but continued to change the track listing until its public launch two days later.

It did not go smoothly: Initially available to buy on his website, users encountered issues trying to buy it, and the download option has now been removed altogether. Yeezy now says the album will "never be for sale," forcing users to install Tidal, the Jay Z-owned streaming platform he has a stake in, to listen.

Throughout this all, Kanye has been tweeting a surreal stream-of-consciousness from this Twitter account — alternately picking fights with ex-girlfriends and asking Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg for a billion dollars.

But even without Tidal's streaming data, we know TLOP is pretty popular. More than half a million people have pirated it.

'Famous' is available on Apple Music and Spotify (I can't believe he didn't credited Rihanna when she sings the chorus, not just some back up lyrics  ).

Tidal also claims that his album was streamed 250M times and their total paid subscribers are now at 3M worldwide (1,35M signed for the HI-FI/$20 tier).

YOUR TOP 15: TRAVELLER 'S CHECKS

Starting this week, we’ll be separating our midweek projections into two lists, one for sales and the other for the SPS chart.

While Chris Stapleton's surge assures him a #1 spot on both the HITS Album Sales and SPS charts this week, we note that Kanye West will likely be #2 SPS based almost entirely on streaming (sales are only through his website), while Lukas Graham will score nearly half their SPS number from single sales. It's a new era indeed.

SPS

Chris Stapleton (Mercury Nashville) 73-78k
Kanye West (G.O.O.D./Def Jam) 58-63k
*Lukas Graham (Warner Bros.) 55-60k
