Charts Analysis: Taylor Swift's Reputation soars to chart summit

Taylor Swift's sixth studio album Reputation debuts at No.1, earning the 27-year-old singer-songwriter her third straight No.1.

With first week sales of 83,648 (including 41,795 from paid-for downloads), the album – which has already spawned four Top 40 singles – falls short of the 90,336 copies its immediate predecessor, 1989, sold when it opened atop the chart three years ago last week. Reputation has not yet been made available for streaming, and 1989 wasn't switched to that model for nine months after release.

Ironically, streams make up the majority of the sales that 1989 secured in the latest frame, accounting for 1,472 of the overall tally of 2,361 that help it to climb 59-54. It is, by far, Swift's biggest selling album with a to-date tally of 1,150,889, of which 69,669 are from streams. Its nearest rival is its 2012 predecessor Red, which sold 61,779 copies when it debuted at No.1 and has now sold 634,636 copies (including 34,555 from streams). Swift has very impressive overall sales of 2,824,164 albums and 11,303,560 singles.

Swift is the third female solo artist to land three albums at No.1 in the 2010s, following Rihanna and Lana Del Rey.

The 13th different album to lead the chart in as many weeks, Reputation secures the year's sixth fastest start for an artist album, trailing Ed Sheeran's ÷ (671,542 sales), Rag'N'Bone Man's Human (117,101 sales), Take That's Wonderland (113,211 sales), Liam Gallagher's As You Were (102,660 sales) and Sam Smith's Too Good At Goodbyes, which opened last week at No.1 on sales of 97,328 copies but now shunts down to No.2 (52,781 sales) to accommodate Swift's arrival.

Her overall albums sales are low to Taylor's status, but her total singles sales are very good.

US Billboard Charts, 02/12/2017 (week Reputation debuted at #1)

Billboard 200
53 68 83 153 1989 - Taylor Swift - Big Machine | BMLG
126 179 – 147 Red - Taylor Swift - Big Machine | BMLG
186 Re-Entry 254 Fearless - Taylor Swift - Big Machine | BMLG
197 Re-Entry 137 Speak Now - Taylor Swift - Big Machine | BMLG

Top Catalog Albums
4 6 5 41 1989 - Taylor Swift
24 47 – 64 Red - Taylor Swift

I think it's interesting to compare this with the 15/11/2014 Billboard 200 chart in which 1989 made it's debut (chart was album sales only then).

15/11/17 Billboard 200

84 79 – 81 Red, Taylor Swift
177 197 – 221 Fearless, Taylor Swift

Red and Fearless are both lower than during 1989's debut week, but they are also 3 years older now. Speak Now did not re-enter the chart during 1989's debut, and 1989 is doing better than Red was at the time of 1989's release, even if we account for album sales only (1989 is at #73 on Top Album Sales this week).

Taylor Swift's "I Don't Wanna Live Forever" ranks #18 at 30 Most Consumed Songs of 2017 Chart

To determine the top songs of 2017 (upon which the Hitmakers list is based), Variety teamed up with BuzzAngle Music, which created a custom chart that factors audio streams, video streams, song sales, radio spins and Shazam tags. These 30 most consumed tracks of the year are ranked below, with the total number representing overall consumption in project units. The BuzzAngle Hitmakers chart represents year-to-date consumption through Nov. 2.

So 128M pure records sold in the Us :o

A part of Britney's total is made in the 90's so if she's not already she's very close to become the biggest female albums seller of the 2000's.

Within the U.S. I am almost certain that she is the number one female album seller of the 2000s. Britney sold at least 6 million albums in 1999 and Adele has around 25 million if I estimated right (3+12+9.4+1)=25.4.

With the way the industry is changing, depending on how Adele's next album performs, Taylor will probably keep that title for the rest of the century.
