Not amazing, but not bad in the end.
Average gross and ticket price are a bit lower than her previous tour’s, but the average attendance is higher.

I think the average gross of $596K is quite bad for an Icon like Janet tho.

Considering all the backlash she suffered and so many years with no material it's a good average. Unfortunately her popularity was impaired and the new generation don't valorizate her how she deserves. Only stans really stand by her. But I believe she can recover a part of public and step up her grosses if she release new material. Janet is a living legend and better performer than the most of these children nowadays including the ones influenced by her.

I disagree. She was still #4 for women this year. She did ZERO promo for this tour. The only promo was a video on YouTube/Twitter and Instagram announcing the tour. She didn't promote any new music. She just went out on the road. It's pretty impressive to do all of that without a hit on the radio and no promo.

She's doing things her way.

Damita Jo= 2,000,000

Discipline= 850,000
Number Ones= 900,000
Unbreakable= 450,000

total= 66,300,000 albums

I will take time to do some real estimations. Will take some time, but I want to give a stab at it.
"Janet Jackson" is more than likely Gold. It wouldn't shock me. From 1991-2006 it has scanned 62k and sold 82k through BMG Music Club from as of 2003. That alone = 144k. Wouldn't shock me if another 350k were shipped from 1982-1990. Since it has 144k in hard sales since 1991.

"Dream Street" is probably somewhere around 300k.

Wouldn't shock me if "Control"-"Janet." all go diamond. "janet." is near 8 million in hard sales in the US. (Soundscan + BMG). It's last cert was for 6 million only 11 months after it's release. It stayed on the charts until 1995 and a few reentries in early 1996 in the lower 190s-200.

I can only estimate US sales as I haven't really followed outside of the US.

Janet Jackson= 500,000
Dream Street= 300,000
Control= 9,000,000-10,000,000
Rhythm Nation= 9,000,000-10,000,000
janet.= 9,000,000-10,000,000
Design of a Decade= 4,000,000
Vevet Rope= 4,000,000
All For You= 3,000,000-4,000,000
Damita Jo= 1,000,000
20 Y.O.= 1,00,000
Discipline= 500,000
Number Ones= 500,000 (should have been certified gold already. Had sales are around 290k-it's a double disc which makes it eligible for a gold cert).
Unbreakable= 300,000

Interestingly enough. She should be around 35-40 million in the US. Too bad she doesn't care.

Janet's relationship is still great with Richard Branson (who is my boss btw, and he is a VERY nice guy), she could easily get her shipment numbers imo.

THE BEATLES

Yesterday, a list of the Biggest Digital Single Sellers has been published. We saw that Rihanna easily dominates this ranking but there is no suspense, she does not appear among Best Physical Single Sellers. It is becausethe physical single market was dead a long time before she has released her first record. So, who leads this category? Are there well ranked artists in the two formats? You will find the answer in the list below!

Please keep in mind some artists with strong results in this format haven’t been studied so far, e.g. Elton John, Elvis Presley or Diana Ross. All figures reflect the value as collected at the time of the artist’s respective articles.

A lot of lists like this one are available in the Data Collector, so feel free to read them to gauge how your favorite artist ranked in it.

Reminder of the formula:

Equivalent Albums Sales (EAS) = 0.3 * Physical Single Sales
Artists Ranking – Physical Singles SAles

Amongst some of the worst figures I have ever seen for a mainstream artist.

She just should’ve put less tickets on sale, and it wouldn’t look so bad.

Janet is a legend, however she is not mainstream. Has not been in years.

But I do agree that those are bad figures. Her not wanting to promote her tour backfired, on top of the delay.

Still proud she did the shows.

"Mainstream" is probably the wrong word, let's go with "established".

The tour would have looked like a big success, with all dates sold out, if she had chosen smaller venues. 3k-5k people capacity theatres or halls and then add a 2nd date in those cities where it was sold out.

It’s not like the stage and show she’s done needed big arenas... it was pretty minimalistic.

The tour picked up steam as it moved along grossing 35 million by the end. Not bad at all. I think she will have new music ready in time for her summer festival dates.

I'm super happy with Janet's sales, but I saw this list and it makes me wonder is it possible that "Rhythm Nation 1814," "Janet," or even "Control" could be Diamond. I mean, one of them, not each of them.

Image

A few more examples of Diamond albums with sales lower than "Rhythm Nation" and "Janet":
1992 Eric Clapton Unplugged (7,617,000) 10× Platinum
1994 Garth Brooks The Hits (7,821,000) 10× Platinum
1994 Soundtrack The Lion King (7,879,000) 10× Platinum

If I say it's possible that at least one of Janet's biggest albums is Diamond, someone will say: No, they weren't available in Universal Music Club. If I say that in that case "Design of a Decade" could be 5 x Platinum, they'll say: No! Sales in that music club were very low.

Yes, she could. They're friends. Btw, 20 million copies sold of "Janet" is coming from him. :lol:

Where did you get a $139m figure from?

She grossed $33.1m in 1998 from her North American dates (which comprised half of the tour). She definitely didn't then gross $106m from the remaining 63 dates.
+1 exactly

I don't think Janet ever pulled a + $100m tour / show to be honest.
It's possible that Velvet Rope grossed over $100 million. That was almost impossible in the early and mid-90s or earlier, but it was possible in the late 90s. She was grossing more than all female artists in the 90s - with exception of Celine Dion maybe, but we can't know that for sure. Tina Turner had slightly bigger attendances than Janet but lower grosses.

Velvet Rope tour grossed $16 million at 14 concerts, out of 125. With average ticket price on these concerts, that would be $135 million. Even if it was less, it should be much less to be below $100 million - which is unrealistic.

For instance:

Janet, The Velvet Rope tour:
Toronto 16,314 / $1,220,928 (one show)

Celine, Let's Talk About Love tour:
Toronto 41,666 / $1,395,742 (two shows)

Janet was outgrossing Celine even in Canada, and Celine grossed $52.4 million on 54 shows. So, yeah. It's very unlikely that Janet didn't gross over $100 million with 125 shows, probably much more than that.

That tour was also her most successful tour in Europe. 33 shows in arenas plus one stadium. She did 4 stadium shows in Afrika and Oceania too.

Janet's concert tours grossed around $430 million to date.

Velvet Rope $140 million
Janet $80 million
Rhythm Nation $65 million
Unbreakable/SOTW $50 million
All for You $50 million
Number Ones $27 million
Rock Witchu $11 million

Attendance around 7.5 million

Janet 2.5 million
Rhythm Nation 2 million
Velvet Rope 2 million

5 continents including stadium shows in Europe, USA, Africa and Asia.

Probably the most successful female touring act of the 90s, in term of grosses, and second most successful in term of attendance (behind Tina Turner).

Of course it's very possible. That's why I wonder why people try to fight that fact so much. "janet." was last certified for 6 million in 1994, but how are we to know exactly how many units it shipped when they finally certified it for 6 million? It could have been anywhere from 6 million to 6,999,999 when it was finally updated. Virgin has always been behind on that. That's clear with the fact it has sold 7.1 million Soundscan + 800k through BMG about 100k sort of 8 million in hard sales.

With an estimated 65 million albums sold, Janet was selling around 5 million copies per album on average, more than 9 million during a period of 20 years (1986 to 2004) and over 10 million copies per album during her peak (1986 to 2001). If we add to it an estimated 55 million singles sold, I can see why she became the highest-paid recording artist in history twice during her career. Pretty impressive.

Can we have something like this for Janet on the first page pls?

Image

I can make a nice looking graphics.

I think that consensus here is like this (correct me if I'm wrong):

Records: 130m
Albums: 65-70m
Singles: 55m
Tour gross: $420m

Can we do this, pls? :)
