Here's what a 40,210 byte (optimized, no metadata) 100 x 100 pixel PNG image can look like:

This image can not be uploaded for use as an avatar because it's bigger than the size limit. It can be if it is converted to JPG but then the transparency is lost and (optimized, no metadata, highest quality setting, 16,178 bytes) it will look like this:

Now, just so no one gets the impression that using JPG always generates smaller images, look at this one:

This is a PNG image that is just 244 bytes. It does not have any transparency. If re-saved as JPG with the highest quality setting it becomes 3,608 bytes and looks like this:
