FINALRESULTS

Thank you all so much for participating, even if you're not that big into Halloween :)

Without further ado, the results:

2nd Place:

Just as when it was down to the final five, Zombie sneaks in with the final vote to tie for 2nd place. As mentioned, lead singer Dolore O'Riordan was the last female standing for a song that, while isn't about prowling ghosts and ghouls, still gets plenty of play at Halloween time. Released in 1994 as the lead single from their 2nd album, it went on to hit #1 in a number of countries, such as Australia, Germany, and France. In the US, it never got a physical single release, as was common then. Under Billboard rules at the time, it was therefore ineligible to chart.

Joining the Cranberries is that quintessential of all Halloween songs, The Monster Mash. It set the standard, which has been hard to beat since then. It is a must play on Halloween night. It was shopped around to labels and had many rejections, but it managed to debut in 1962 and hit #1 on the BB H100 just in time for Halloween. It ended up having a much longer chart life than anyone anticipated, returning in August of 1970 to peak at #93, and then bizarrely, a big run in May of 1973 where it actually made the top 10 again - one of a rare handful of songs to hit the top 10 on two separate chart runs. The song was originally banned in the UK as being too morbid, but when finally allowed to chart in 1973, it also hit the top 10.

WINNER

In the end, both of these songs play second fiddle to another must have on Halloween - Ray Parker, Jr's Ghostbusters. Famously, Parker could not think of a way to rhyme Ghostbusters with anything and thus defaulted to the iconic "Who ya gonna call?" line. The song managed to pull off an Academy Award nomination (losing to Phil Collins - the horror), and peaked at #1 in Canada, the US, and throughout Europe. It peaked at #2 in the UK, held out by another movie song "I Just Called to Say I Love You" by Stevie Wonder. The song fell out of the top ten there in mid-October, just before Halloween.

Anyhow, that concludes this Survivor! Again, thank you all for participating and if you'll excuse me, that damn Invisible Man won't get the hell out of my bed, so I need to make a call...
