Glam Rock Survivor!!!!!!

Did that title get your attention? I hope so, as the world of Glam Rock is not exactly something that comes at you gently and understated. Synonymous with a few years in the early 70s, this is really no-nonsense rock music at its finest - and we're going to find out what UKMIX considers to be the best of the best.

So - how on earth do you decide what is glam rock and what is not? The likes of T. Rex, Slade, the Sweet and Gary Glitter are pretty obvious, as of course are 00s glam rockers the Darkness. However what about Queen? What about David Bowie? Well, I've basically used Wikipedia as a guide. Any act that Wikipedia considers on its list of Glam Rock acts, I've then gone through the albums/singles they've released and seen if Wikipedia considers that particular track to be glam rock or not. Therefore, in this original list, there's pretty much the entire career of Slade - but no "My Oh My". There's a certain classic era of Bowie, but not his whole career. There's Queen's debut album, with blatantly glam stuff like "Seven Seas Of Rhye", but nothing else from them. There's also a few rather controversial choices, including the likes of Cockney Rebel, Rubettes, one album's worth of Bay City Rollers and most controversially IMHO the first few albums of Britpop legends Suede.

I've created a list of 150 of the most well known tracks from that list - including all the top 10 hits that qualified, together with a few well known smaller hits (particularly some of the Bowie classics). However, there's doubtless going to be some tracks that really should be here and didn't make that 150. Some of them we might simply disagree with Wikipedia on whether or not they're glam, and others simply weren't very big hits (for example, I absolutely love Swedish Eurovision entrants the Ark with "The Worrying Kind" but it bombed at No. 121 on the charts!)

So - to start off with, here's the list of 150 songs we have thus far...

There's obviously no way I could compile a list of "tracks you might consider to be glam rock that Wikipedia disagrees with". However, here is a list of the songs that fit my Wikipedia definition of glam rock, but weren't big enough hits to be included in the original 150.

I can include songs that aren't on that list, right? Though I realise that makes it less likely anyone else will vote for them... Still, here goes...

6. Suede - So Young
5. The Ark - Father Of A Son
4. Suede - The Drowners
3. The Ark - Let Your Body Decide
2. David Bowie - Changes
1. Suede - New Generation

Looking interesting so far. Chantal - quick request - any chance you could find a link to "I Am Rock"? You've picked something so obscure that I can't trace it on YouTube - and barring a number of other votes, at very least everyone's top scorer will make it. Alternatively, if you want to shift around your list at all I'll accept an amendment. Of course you can keep it without providing a link, but I suspect it won't do well if no soul knows it.

Yeah, I remembered after I posted my list that I Am Rock isn't on YouTube or anywhere else linkable!!

Can I swap in 'Drugs' instead please? It's not quite as glam as I Am Rock, but I'd say it still qualifies (and it's on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XJlD6XLyKtg) :)

Yeah - sure. Navi - for now I'll put you down as 10 points for "So Long" and 9 points for "She's In Love With You". If you get chance to add any more, I'll gladly add them.

Okay - let's close down round 0... it was abundantly clear what our favourites were to miss the list - and both I was trying to squeeze in in the first place - two classic 00s Eurovision entrants to throwback to the glam rock era - "The Worrying Kind" by The Ark and "In My Dreams" by Wig Wam. In fact, one of the reasons for this round was that I couldn't justifiably squeeze in "The Worrying Kind" without finding space for "In My Dreams". Suede's "The Drowners" and "The "In" Crowd" by Bryan Ferry are the others that made it to over ten points and clearly make it in.

Four of us see our top choice advance solely on our votes - Slade's flop "Myzterious Mizster Jones", the little known Simple Kid with "Drugs" (He used to have a wonderful chatbot on his website back when such things were novel.), the huge hit "Magic" by Pilot, which I can certainly see the glam-ness in and "So Long", which becomes the only ABBA song on the list. I'd rather the album track "King Kong Song" had made it myself, but "So Long" is another great example of glam-ABBA. Two more songs made it in - glam queen Suzi Quatro with "Daytona Demon" and another from the Ark - "Echo Chamber". So - let's give you a few more links to help out...

Ark - The Worrying Kind
Wig Wam - In My Dreams
Suede - The Drowners
Bryan Ferry - The "In" Crowd
Slade - Myzterious Mizster Jones
Simple Kid - Drugs
Pilot - Magic
ABBA - So Long
Suzi Quatro - Daytona Demon
Ark - Echo Chamber

Amongst those that didn't quite make it, we had Bowie's huge classic album track "Changes", "The Time Warp", "She's In Love With You" by Suzi Quatro, and the track that just missed out at the last minute - "In The Meantime" by Spacehog.

I'll start round 1 on a new post...

Round 1
Alice Cooper - School's Out
Darkness - Growing On Me
Darkness - I Believe In A Thing Called Love
David Bowie - Drive In Saturday
Doctor and the Medics - Spirit In The Sky
Glitter Band - Let's Get Together Again
Roxy Music - Pyjamarama
Suede - Beautiful Ones
Suzi Quatro - Devil Gate Drive
T. Rex - I Love To Boogie

So - the way these rounds go is very simple. There's 10 songs. You rank them in order. The five with the most votes go through, the five with the least get the boot. Round 1 somehow has ended up really rather tough!

First of all apologies - there's a system glitch meaning it's not letting me edit the topic title for some reason.

10 Suzi Quatro - Devil Gate Drive
9 Darkness - Growing On Me
8 Alice Cooper - School's Out
7 Darkness - I Believe In A Thing Called Love
6 Suede - Beautiful Ones
5 T. Rex - I Love To Boogie
4 Doctor and the Medics - Spirit In The Sky
3 David Bowie - Drive In Saturday
2 Glitter Band - Let's Get Together Again
1 Roxy Music - Pyjamarama

If people could do it as points (so 10 for your favourite) and rank them with the 10-pointer at the top, that would be wonderful :D

Well, it was abundantly clear which song came last in that round! Gary Glitter's backing band - the Glitter Band - had a fair few hits of their own that are featured on here, but in a very strong group "Let's Get Together Again" was considered to be rather glam-by-numbers really. Joining it with an early exit is the first entry for Roxy Music - a song called "Pyjamarama" which hasn't stood the test of time. The Darkness started this round off fantastically, and particularly "Growing On Me" - which was top 2 for each of the first two voters. However, the rest of you really didn't rate this track, so boo to you - IMHO it's their best song. We also lose the first of oodles of T. Rex songs, the slightly less-glam and smaller-hit despite being really well known due to an advert or two - "I Love To Boogie". Finally for this round, on a tie-break, we lose a track from music icon David Bowie - "Drive In Saturday". If anyone wonders, ties are broken by order of votes.

Code: Select all
156. David Bowie - Drive In Saturday
157. T. Rex - I Love To Boogie
158. Darkness - Growing On Me
159. Roxy Music - Pyjamarama
160. Glitter Band - Let's Get Together Again

Round 2
Glitter Band - Angel Face
Roxy Music - Virginia Plain
Rubettes - I Can Do It
Suede - Saturday Night
Suede - Stay Together
Sweet - Wig Wam Bam
T. Rex - 20th Century Boy
T. Rex - Children Of The Revolution
Wizzard - Are You Ready To Rock
Wizzard - Ball Park Incident
