HITS

38 Against The Current - Habits (Stay High)

The best of ATC's incredibly popular YouTube covers (40 million views!!). I never charted either of the Tove Lo versions and really didn't like the hit remix. This really does bring a new passion to it. Tove's own True Disaster missed this YE.

ALBUMS

38 Julianna Barwick - Will
DEEZER

Ethereal soundscapes.

HITS

37 Hannah Diamond - Make Believe

She is an associate of Charli XCX of course but this is her best solo song and was a late challenger for my Christmas number one - she settled for #2. It's free from her Soundcloud.

ALBUMS

37 Solange - A Seat At The Table
DEEZER

Better than her sister's album by miles (again!). Though not quite the standard of her last full length.

HITS

36 Britney Spears - Make Me

Well this was a nice surprise after several truly appalling singles. Co-composed with Marina Diamandis' ex (and supposed flingee with Ellie G) Matthew Burns.

ALBUMS

36 Nine Inch Nails - Not The Actual Events (MA)
DEEZER

A surprise release right on top of Christmas. Trent Reznor's longtime associate Atticus Ross became a full NIN member and this heavy 5-track also had guest spots from Daves Grohl and Navarro.

HITS

35 Rebel and A Basketcase - Escondido / Just Friends / La Fee (Rebel and A Basketcase 2 EP)
DEEZER EP STREAM

Gorgeous lead track with a spoken delivery from Evan Rachel Wood. Really reminds me of something Kitten would do. When she says to the viewer "at least i got your attention" i melt. :P

ALBUMS

35 Blancmange - Commuter 23
DEEZER

HITS

34 Icona Pop - Someone Who Can Dance

Their best ever song was ignored by radio and even by the girls themselves when they didn't make a video for it. Far better than I Love It as a catchy party song, IMO and even the early synth delights they did. They performed an unreleased version with Zara Larsson and Elliphant but i've embedded the single audio.

ALBUMS

34 Suede - Night Thoughts
DEEZER

Surprisingly good for veteran indies. Not many of em can still cut it.

HITS

33 Against The Current - Fireproof

One of the heaviest songs, if you're a Paramore fan and haven't checked them out yet, why the hell not?? 2 more to come VERY high up.

ALBUMS

33 Niki and The Dove - Everybody's Heart Is Broken Now
DEEZER

Not the classic the debut was but great disco-tinged pop. It's disgraceful that the media ignores them.

HITS

32 Cappa - I'm Good

Last of today's batch starts with Carla Cappa's lovely synth-pop.

ALBUMS

32 Night Moves - Pennied Days
DEEZER

Almost back to back with Night Thoughts is this set of indie and synth.

HITS

31 Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds - Girl In Amber

This and the remaining song both demonstrate the new warmth and accessibility of Cave / The Seeds.

DEEZER

Intense indie rock.

HITS

30 The National - Morning Dew

The group curated a mammoth box set of covers of The Grateful Dead, of which this was one of their contributions. If only radio had picked it up, this is fantastic adult rock and better than any of the previous versions of the song.

ALBUMS

30 Britney Spears - Glory
DEEZER

Yeah, some of it is dodgy but the slow tracks are among the best she's done.

HITS

29 Nina Nesbitt - Chewing Gum / Take You To Heaven / Masquerade (Modern Love EP)
DEEZER EP STREAM

It's criminal that radio ignored Chewing Gum (not a cover of Annie!). But at least UKMix still like her. :D

ALBUMS

29 Kitten - Heaven Or Somewhere In Between (MA)
DEEZER

Stopgap while we wait for the second full-length. Not as amazing as can be but better than most of this ilk- two fifths of this are on the songs list.

HITS

28 Zayn and Taylor Swift - I Don't Wanna Live Forever

So Zayn had a great single in PillowTalk (to my amazement) and a decent album but this is his only YE appearance. Composed with and produced by Swift regular Jack Antonoff from Fun. and Bleachers, this is gorgeous. Obviously it's not been fully marketed yet so all the early YE listers can say to me "well it doesn't have a proper video yet, it's basically a pre-release". Nope, it's a 2016 release and this is why i hold out till the last days of December. Cause i have it on my list and you don't! So there! :D

ALBUMS

28 Chairlift - Moth
DEEZER

Not enough of the great pop sounds of Something for me. Damn shame they've split.

HITS

27 Charli XCX - Explode

Not a single but Atlantic Records uploaded an audio stream video for this, which constitutes a tiny bit of marketing for The Angry Birds Movie in which Charli also voiced a character. I've not seen the film and Charli didn't even mention this song on her Twitter which suggests it's a cast-off from Sucker that she forgot about. It's a great throwaway dance-pop track, better than After The Afterparty for me. Pity it wasn't pushed more strongly.

ALBUMS

27 Ramin Djawadi - Game Of Thrones Season 6 (OTVST)
DEEZER

Probably the best set yet, certainly popular after the explosive season finale.

HITS

26 Charlotte Hatherley - A Sign
DEEZER STREAM

Released unexpectedly early on Christmas Eve, this stunning synth track by former Ash and Bat For Lashes live member doesn't even have a video link yet!

Image

ALBUMS

26 Ladyhawke - Wild Things
DEEZER

Again, not the classic her debut was but slightly better than the confused second album. She's back to synths and better for it.

HITS

25 Lock - Everlasting Road

Think of a midway point between old-style Veronicas and The Pierces. Great melodic pop-rock from sisters Edie and Gita (formerly known as The Langley Sisters). This was played on XFM but i'm surprised Radio 2 didn't cream over it.

ALBUMS

25 Jamie-Lee - Berlin
DEEZER

Unfairly maligned at Eurovision, this teenager was the winner of The Voice Of Germany and this is a decent set of quirky pop. She has a great voice, they should have just laid off with the costumes at ESC. Was too big a moment for her to cope with, i think.

HITS

24 Angela Perley and The Howlin' Moons - Electric Flame

A great find this group were, hidden away on BBC Radio Scotland's playlist (not with this and they're American). This is Americana with a stunning vocalist. This is from recent album Homemade Visions. One more to come.

ALBUMS

24 Avec Sans - Heartbreak Hi
DEEZER

Closing today's batch is this synth duo who have built a cult following over the past few years. This set is a bit like a hits set to me. If you liked old style Little Boots and Saint Etienne...

Surprised to see Britney, twice, and Zayn (thank god I don't have it in my YE chart, it's awful  ). Shame about Carly last year, I loved e.mo-tion

On the plus side I like Someone Who Can't Dance, particularly the live collab you allude to!

^Nope, it's one of the dodgy ones. :D
Actually it's not, it's just dull and i like Tinashe, too. Pity. Private Show and Clumsy are the guilty ones. Everything i hated about recent Britney before this.

38 Against The Current - Habits (Stay High)
36 Britney Spears - Make Me
34 Icona Pop - Someone Who Can Dance
33 Against The Current - Fireproof
32 Cappa - I'm Good
28 Zayn and Taylor Swift - I Don't Wanna Live Forever
27 Charli XCX - Explode
Many great songs. Surprised to see "I Don't Wanna Live Forever" already so high. I was already over this after a week but i think it'll grow on me once it gets massive airplay (and i'm sure it will get lots of airplay...). Icona Pop's track is good, way too underrated, same to Cappa.

30 Britney Spears - Glory
25 Jamie-Lee - Berlin
Wow, i'm impressed with Jamie-Lee being so high on your list :o "Berlin" is a great debut with many well produced pop songs. A shame they completely gave up on her once she flopped on the contest, typical german label  I always thought she could have been a big star in Germany...

^Shame. Though i see there was a video for Wild One. I hadn't seen she had a Vevo. That will be a late entry on my weekly chart then.
