I remember the very first time I heard this. Babyman had come to visit me in Seoul, and we had just woken up but still in bed. He was online and saw that the song had come out so he played it (he's a Beyonce fan so he was excited). I lied there listening to it and thought it was one hot mess and I had no desire to ever listen to it again. And the mass hysteria over it didn't help either - suddenly lessers around the world were talking about Red Lobster and hot sauce as though they never existed before.
A few weeks later, I was DJing at a party, and my friend is a huge Beyonce fan so I thought I would add it to the playlist. As I was perfecting the playlist, I had to listen to it a lot and it suddenly clicked with me. The hook throughout is infectious and it's nicely layered. Don't care for the ATRL lyrics but it's a dope song!
A few months later, I was in Hawaii, and I spontaneously decided to climb Diamond Head. Because I hadn't planned it, I was wearing flip-flop and didn't have any water with me. I was near the top and couldn't handle it anymore. Severely dehydrated and uncomfortable. Then I played Formations and it gave me a second wind. Something came over me and listening to that song gave me so much drive and I made it to the top. So it's a really good workout and motivational song for me.
Everything else on that album isn't to my taste, but this is now one of my favourite Beyonce songs.
To be honest, I wasn't sure about the inclusion of this one, because 'Unbreakable' came out in 2015. However, the video for 'Dammn Baby' dropped in May, so I guess that makes it a 2016 release. I actually like this song more than most of the songs on my countdown, but I've put it at #12 based on my 2016 connection with the song.
The song itself took a while to grow on me when the album came out. All the fans loved it but I thought it was a mess. The video actually helped me like it a lot more. The video itself is fine, nothing groundbreaking but it was nice to get some new choreography from Jan and it's well done. Since the video came out, if I listen to this song when I'm out in public, I always envision the video and mimic her struts.
The video came out during a bad time for me as a Janet fan though. It was just after she'd cancelled her US tour (and European tour a few weeks earlier) and as some of y'all may 'member, I was very angry and even had a 'i hate u janet jackson' signature for several weeks. So I wasn't even excited for the video and didn't really anticipate it much. I was still mad, and this is the downfall of this particular single. It'll always remind me of that time I hated Janet Jackson.
